The real skill comes into place when you've handled gold and silver for so long that you can SEE the difference. Rick has the amazing ability to do that!
Yeah its weird because some of it clearly is his knowledge like at the end when he mentions the quality of the gold. That was definitely experience talking and not a script... I honestly don't know what level chum is actually at but there's no way he is as incompetent as he's portrayed
And now that I actually watch what he said, it seemed like he meant it was probably on the higher end of in between 14k-18k. It’s not always exactly a certain percentage of gold so you “could” have a stamped 14k piece that in reality is 16k-17k.
then don't sell your shit to a fuckin pawnshop bitch, all they're gonna do is sell it for scrap value most likely anyways so they don't give a shit if it's scratched or not, also if your gonna take your rings into a pawn shop why don't you do your own tests at home or just sell it to a shop that deals in just gold and silver, they'll most likely take better care of it before buying it off you
The corollary of this is that if you just want something that looks nice, even the people who work with it constantly can't reliably tell real from fake without using chemicals. I understand the emotional and sentimental value of having a precious metal or natural gem, but fake or lab-made gems can be just as pretty and sparkly.
hahah you watched this too, I just got started watching it recently, and I love it so much. && your right the episode where he comes back as an elf was hilarious
Gold is NOT inert, the reagent he used is a solution called aqua regia which is a mix of nitric and hydrochloric acid which will in fact dissolve gold. A proper assay test would be to use titration to add nitric acid to the HCL solution to determine the gold content.
Was the fake gold ring actually made out of "fool's gold"? He said it was plated, but that's not the same thing as "fool's gold", which is an actual mineral that got its name from fooling gold miners.
When something has been an established name for centuries, things don't quite work like that. Sure, of course you can jokingly call it a "fool's gold ring". But if it's simply a gold plated ring made from whatever, that's not actually Fool's Gold, but a fake gold ring. Fool's Gold, aka Pyrite, is something very specific, and not just anything with a gold plated shine. And that's all I wanted clarified, like butter. Cheers, mate!
+dradeel I'm pretty sure he was not actually referring to the ring as being made of "fools gold." I think it was just a light-hearted title for the video.
The material used to make the scatches from the ring is a material that with a slight scratch it will scarpe the slab, gold in rings are hardened very strongly so you would have to put a lot of effort to blemish it.
Hey Chum, its good to see you talk like you really are. I hate the way you are portrayed on the show. You are decent guy and when you see this vid,you have brains as well. I wish you wouldnt let them treat you the way they do !
It should be noted that the testing stone is similar to lead, a mineral that is softer than gold. What this means is when you scratch a ring across it, it does not scratch the ring, if anything it buffs it.
I was just watching TV and an Old ITT commercial came on and I noticed it was a clean cut Chumlee with his family. In the commercial his Dad gos back to (ITT) school, and now works on the fountains at the Bellagio. Just cracked me up!!
As I'm looking at these old clips and then I see the new episodes on the History Channel I see how much weight Cory and Chum have lost and dang, they look like whole new fellas. Great job guys, you look great.
Chumlee: I need some new buisness cards. Rick: I just gave you a box of them the other day. Chumlee: I used all of them. Rick: What for? Chumlee: For potential customers that walk in the door. Rick: *facepalm* I'm not giving you anymore.
I've tested a few that I've managed to sell and So far that I've Noticed No it doesn't Deface value because imperfections are always expected and usually its all about Carat Value / Weight. From what I've been told if a ring or gold item is damaged or looks otherwise unworthy to sell it gets melted down and sold anyway not always in that order. This is just my experience and does not mean that is the way it is.
if you want someone to pay you hundreds of dollars for a ring, they will let you scratch it, i work in a pawn shop. never had anyone complain, they're usually selling it anyway. if its marked and it passes a rare earth magnet test or it has a makers mark usually you can identify it without a scratch but the scratch is the best test.
Even if you did not have a scratch, you did remove material so the ring is less valuable. Technically speaking, although not much. And to the person that says it does not matter if the ring is fake if your left with a scratch..maybe the ring meant more because it was still handed down to them...now it is scratched and wrecked.
That's a good idea actually. If for any reason I want to sell something that needs to be tested in such a way, I'll remember to get a price first (although pawn shops might not be so kind to remind you of that)
no, muriatic acid(hydrochloric) + nitric acid is called aqua regia, it will disolve almost all of the jewelry metals, alloys have nothing to do it it. It is diluted in a fashion that it will dissolve nearly all jewelers metals and gold UP TO the karat listed on the label, which was 14k in this case. Titanium is one metal that also will not dissolve, but you would have a hard time scratching off the metal due to it's hardness.
every ring in the world is scratched, if you use a jewelers loupe you'd see that. every ring in the world most likely has been stone tested for its metal purity. moron.
Beware of false positive acid test with rolled gold: base metal inside rather thick gold sheet (unlike electrolytic gilding when gold layer is extremely thin and will be rubbed off on the stone). For larger pieces, file deep enoght to reach base metal; the problem is with chains.
The gold that’s plated on the ring is real but that’s all it is, just a thin plate of it where the rest is just common metal. But people will try to say it’s solid gold. The 14k gold isn’t just plated but it’s a alloy, which means there’s quite a bit of gold mixed with a common metal.
i deal in 10, 14, 18, 22 and 24kt gold. First off, no you idiots, scratching the ring is necessary. IT does not deface the value of the ring. That gold dust streak is not worth 1$. And 2, that "fake" ring as he put it, is actually real. Plated gold does not scratch gold on a stone , but rather black. That tiny ring he scratched first is 10K gold, thats why the 14K acid melted away the streak.
Wrong. Scratching is only necessary if you do not have a trained eye. Also, for shops with more money to spend, you can invest in an x-ray machine to determine exactly the metal types in your ring. While I agree scratching does not deface the value of the ring, it is wrong to say scratching is necessary. Also, plated gold does not scratch black. Plated means exactly that - it is plated in real gold. If you scratch a plated gold ring to the point it starts coming off black, then you've scratched way too much off of it.
Before you go acid testing all of your jewlry, keep this in mind: Gold is Non-Magnetic, and itsa very its a soft metal. Use a simple magnet at home to test your jewlry, if it passes, do a "bite," test. Hope this helps.
Chum Lee is so tight. My dad recently went to Las Vegas and got an autogragh from him, its going to be hung on my wall right next to my autograghed picture of Gary Payton.
yes... usually if you're buying second hand items good vendors will tell you its been acid tested and show you where it was scratched if you ask. They also take care to scratch discrete places like the inside of a ring or back of pendant etc
there is no easier way, you scratch the ring in the back neways so it actually wont show up at all in the ring, also, he may say that u gotta get alot on the area but its really a TINY amount of gold that actually comes off and the scratches it leaves are extremly easy to fix
Chum: Yep, that's the real deal!
Customer: Awesome so how much can you give me for it?
Chum: Nothing. It's all scratched to shit.
😅
If they are selling it as scrap gold scratches don't matter.
@@canaan5337 let’s be honest though, if something is in good condition and not broken, it’s not scrap
You know it's real gold when Rick says "I'll give you 5$ for it and I'm losing money".

Doesn't this damage the rings?
I would imagine it does. But I think they buy that stuff on the basis of melting it. So a little loss to ensure it is real is probably worth it.

you could also just use a strong magnet, pure gold will not stick to it, but the plated one would.
+79274333 well if the base metal is non-magnetic, you wont be able to tell.
The magnet is only the first phase. The ring could be gold-plated copper, in which case it will look real and not stick to the magnet.
it would be funny if one day rick went like "hmm...i dunno much about these things let me call my buddy chumlee to examine it"
