Brings back great memories of carrying tape machines into concerts whether or not I was the engineer on duty. After attending a wedding, I arrived at the gig wearing the same 3-piece suit and tie struggling with a heavy black transit case, set up the recorder and two microphone stands, not a single person dared question me, got the whole show in beautiful fidelity. Another time I brought a mono Ampex 600 to a local show and the result was the smoothest, silkiest sound I've ever heard. Could never afford a Nagra or afford to have it stolen, but if it had been me I would have pushed the Nagra to at least 0 dB to improve the SNR still further. My rig had two dual-needle meters (Aiwa 6900), both peak and VU for each channel. Unique video, thank you for posting!
Great video, great music but what in format and input terms is being recorded on to tape via the other machine called a “synchroniser”? What is the input into the Synchroniser? I know it’s Grateful Dead, but how and what? Sounds like a live recording but we aren’t supposed to believe that this is a film of a live feed via the Synchroniser direct to the Reel to Reel recorder, so what is actually going on? I ask because i have a broken reel to reel and want to understand the tech much better and because this is my first introduction to this particular make of reel to reel
Grateful Dead live performance was recorded on tape together with Nagra Pilot signal. QSLS synchronizer is used for playback. So that Pilot signal is resolved for correct speed. It has nothing to do with Grateful Dead live music. I just used it as a opportunity to show how Pilot resolving works on IV-S during playback.
@@MrPartrick1Thanks! By the way, I did a Nagra Pilot sync test with 16mm camera, the way it was intended for. Maybe you will find it interesting: ruclips.net/video/dzfTt5KXEws/видео.htmlfeature=shared

Gorgeous😍
Sup bro is this a 3 head machine? Can i print directly to protools
It has 4 heads: rec, playback, erase and Pilot track (for motion picture sync). But there are also 3 heads only versions (without Pilot sync).
Pozdrowienia z Bydgoszczy. Również posiadam 4s :)
Tasty quality
Sehr geil!
Danke, freut mich, dass es dir gefällt. 😊
I know that there’s a partial explanation above but it’s very partial, at least to my untutored brain!
Nice
