A rich and original voice matched with prodigious song writing talent, Oldham has built a career spanning generational divides. Johnny Cash covered the guy's material for God's sake. With eccentricities as unique as they are curious, the Scottish derivation of the name change and affectations aside, Oldham seems to be quite happy conducting his own personal experiment in the cultivation of independent obscurity. Case in point- he comes to New Orleans and plays literally a backyard venue with a capacity in the mid-double digits when he could easily be at a college a mile away playing for several thousand. I saw a gig once where the entire band was in kilts and Tam-O'Shanters. I mean wtf, Scottish costumes? He's playing a flimsy Kawai "violin guitar" in this clip, a more frivolous instrument was never made, yet he pulls it off. The guy is a national treasure and as true to himself as one can get. I hope he enjoys a long, long life.
Nicely stated. Oldham is brilliant and incomparable. I have an ex-girlfriend who saw him in concert and said it was like a religious experience (Cant believe she didn't invite me! as I was the one to introduce her to his music :(
bonnie prince billy may be the most prolific artist of my life. the dude releases as much music as lil wayne or something. since the palace brothers days. i love you will.

@@CrowBeam I'd have to agree. Got into Bonnie Prince Billy fairly recently and through that discovered Angel Olsen. Going through her discography you kinda nailed the drop off point for her in my level of enjoyment as well.
Love Will Oldham, but i also have to praise his backing band! Anyone know who the female singer is? She has an amazing voice. Also the second guitarist!
Will is singing better and better as he's getting older.. love it
sheer, mad, inconceivable genius, love and respect to all devotees of absolute torch and twang.
I totally agree, BonniePB! A great record. Bonnie Prince Billy and his band really do justice to the song!

Also, quite strangely, he has a small part in the John Sayles' film "Matewan" as a kid preacher.
I'm curious what Johnny Cash covered? Thanks!
