- Salt water doesn't rot boats, freshwater does, and one of the main ways freshwater finds its way into boats is through badly sealed deck fittings. Principal of the Sydney Wooden Boat School, boatbuilder and sailor Ian Smith shows you the techniques he's used to resist water ingress developed in a forty-plus year career in building and repairing wooden boats. The boat featured, a 24' Ranger class gaff-rigged sloop VOLUNTEER is now in the water and racing regularly with the Classic division of the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club, but Ian had filmed footage of the drilling and fitting of his deck gear while the boat was still in the shed.
Well, that was really helpful, especially the part about countersinking both, deck and fitting. Thank you!
Good one Smitty, expert advice
Thank you for sharing this. Very useful 😀
Got some alloy frames to fit to my steel bus - once I've done the weld repairs; gonna use some of your advice.
_CHEERS!_

Great video. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Well said.
I've started using this process for my fibreglass deck, together with butyl tape, I've cured many leaking deck fitting.
I'm interested to know which Sikaflex you are using.... You just mention PRO but there seems to be more than one PRO? (it looks like 291 or 290 Pro in the video, I can only see the '2')
