Holding your breath and bearing down (like when you are taking a dump) is entirely different than forcing air into your nasal cavity to pop your ears or clear your sinuses. While both activities might be called the Valsalva maneuver, they are really two different things, which doesn't help the confusion any. Clearing the sinuses does not require bearing down. It simply forces air into the sinuses and the eustachian tube. This activity only affects your head, or more specifically, the sinuses and eustachian tube. Holding your breath and bearing down does not clear the sinuses and will not pop your ears, but may provide cardiac benefits (as you describe). Whomever decided to name these two different activities the same thing needs to have their head examined.
Thanks a lot, aside from the awkwardness of our "daily" routine, it is absolutely gr8 to know that Valsalvar maneuver is actually used for critical conditions as well. You really made it much more respectful maneuver.
Thank you so much. My lecturer didn't mention the Valsava further in class but she'll put it in the next exam. Now here I am and thank you again for making it easier than my lecturer.
+Jorge Vives Thanks for the comment- unfortunately this was filmed during an isolated teaching event and we would have to splice together another video to finish the lecture. Hopefully you got the jist of it from the abbreviated video above, but we'll work on splicing something onto the end soon. Thanks again Jorge-
I've seen some people say they you get a boost in strength when you do this and it seem like it's true, I've used it throughout my life to lift things if I couldn't but I would focus the pressure into my arms, legs and abs.
I'm a Respiratory Therapist Student and wanted to share information regarding chest tubes. An air leak (in the water seal chamber) can be tested by having the patient perform a Valsalva Maneuver or a forceful cough.
I suffered from frequent episodes of PVC I mean all over the place until one day I did the Valsava and sudenly a genie came out of a bottle and asked me for a wish, I wished for no PVCs...... lo and behold, I am PVC free for years now - normal sinus rhythm and EKG, occasional skipped beat (extremely rare) - Now I have 2 wishes left.
Glad to hear you doing fine. How exactly did you perform that ? is there a video on youtube you used for example ? I think i have the same thing, I'm a singer and i must have messed up my cardiovascular system doing all these breathing exercises. I want the genie to visit me too.
You might make it a disclaimer but you're still responsible for what you say, if there's an error, then you've made set error and you're responsible for set error. Regardless of disclaimer.
can I use this during say ... climbing stares with 75 pounds ? for 3 mins???? im practicing for a physical test so I can move on with a career. I have noticed while training for the test how high my heart is getting wich may tire me to do more of the test on test day. my heart rate is a average heart rate, but when doing this stare thing it goes way up... like 198... im 160 pounds 5'3 female. what should i do in a situation to lower heart rate while moving like this.
... I should have rather said "almost daily"... no one wants to go through childbirth everyday! Also, it is never going to feel awkward when we are UNABLE to expel bowl/bladder contents...

How do i get rid of the ear pressure ? Any medication or exercise please help .
muhammad makky pinch your nose and close your mouth and breath hard, but be careful not to go to hard bc you can damage your ears
When I take a dump, I faint. Any way to prevent that? Please!?

Good video man. Where can I find the rest of the video? It just stopped mid-sentence.
Please upload the second part of the video.
thanks man >>>>> greeting from Iraq
Was it hard to do the maneuver instead of describing?
Thanks for the post. It would be great to also add a section showing the patient doing this - such as blowing into a syringe etc.
I'm looking for a full album entitled The Valsalva Maneuver by a band named Celery.. Someone please help me.
Dude this video is brilliant but what about the ending?
not to be used for atrial fibrillation?
it was helpful in understanding when I combined with my teacher's powerpoint! Thanks! Please put up the rest of the video?

Yup. I was asked by the paramedics whilst monitored in the back of an ambulance to cough for the same reason

Dude you I saw you in a video. You had hypocalcemia. Are you better now
some days are better than others haha. thanks for watching!
I always though Valsalva was an ear equalizing technique where u blow your nose while holding nostrils closed not bearing down
thank you :)
Since when did Tim Ferris go to medical school?
Yeah, that's the Gear 2nd you showing us rn
Hey bro! Something went wrong on your video. It’s incomplete. You were doing good but something happened.

Ended in the middle of a sentence and for making med school easy, this is unfortunately too oversimplified.

You know that Valsalva can dissect an artery and give people a stroke? I would not encourage anyone to do this.
Citation?
I've never read that anywhere. Can you provide a source for that claim, please?
I think I can pop my ears easily without doing any kind of maneuver like this. I can pop my ears while breathing in, out, whatever.
That's a joke

How can I use this technique in the gym ?
Feels like the best part of info was cut off! Wtf?
I did it to stop afib..........but ended-up poopspraying all over the place.

He’s smart but it doesn’t show because he’s only wearing a T-shirt. He should dress up like he’s a professor next time. Otherwise, good teaching 👍
