Years ago my father was a solo hiker, he was a beast!! One day while hiking in the mountains he crossed paths with a huge vicious starving German Shepard. He shared his bag of beef jerky and his bottle of water with the animal and that dog came home and lived with us for the next twelve years. The smartest and most loyal dog ever!!
If that's true that is such a beautiful story and simply amazing
How cute!
Why isn't this a movie 😂
Thanks going to your father. He had the presence of mind and kindness.
@Bill Pii well than someone better give me tf name
At a shelter I volunteered at, when I came across a dog like that, I sat outside the kennel , no eye contact, and sang to them. It calmed them down.
Cesar Millan would be proud
That is really nice.
That is so beautiful
Dogs love when you sing to them.
You’re the best
You've got balls. Glad doggy didn't get 'em. He seems like a really sweet dog actually once you get beyond him trying to disembowel you.
He is calm and assertive. 😁
All bluff, he never intended to bite him. Had his chance a couple times never took it.
If I’m watching a trainer/ behaviorist and they say there’s only one way to teach a dog, I’m done with them. Dogs, like people, learn in different ways.
More then one way no matter what!
Tell us the other effective ways. I'll wait. And are you comparing dogs to humans now in how we learn?! 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
@@mel999.I think that they’re agreeing with Thomas, Thomas said this xact same thing!!
mind blowing every time you see how "aggressive" these shepherds look like, but what great dogs they are once they learn that they can live a better life
Wait til there is no water no electricity and no gas, some humans will turn into beasts too. JK
They love to be told what to do, it's amazing how people let them fail so easily. Shep's are born to obey, it's in their genetics!
Fix 'R Up Chevy my husband and I are having this exact same discussion. I’m trying to show him how to walk our rescue GSD so that she understands who is in charge. She will not walk right for him at all. For me she does what I tell her and after a few timed corrections she walks great on a leash. But I keep having to retrain her each time I walk her because he walks her incorrectly
I agree on this... GSDs are a breed that consistently needs to work. You need to lead them... If they are lead correctly, they are simply an amazing dog.

Yeah same, I saw this in my recommendation and started to watch it on my tv but this dude doesn't know how to edit the music into the background quietly and I was so exited to see it when I finished my hw :(
All these comments are understatements....

I just said the same thing
Indeed my friens.. bec suddenly there will have tons of animmal expert criticism if he don't do that. Sigh bashers. Leave this good man alone.
There is a ton of misconception about eCollars and technology. People think you are cattle prodding and that is so not the case. Darn... With our dog who recently passed we had an e collar for two years before using it. It turned out to be way less stressful for the dog and for us ... and really we only corrected him a handful of times IN HIS LIFE! But people need a lot of reassurance and people need the training more than the dog does... (we have to learn to treat our dogs like dogs and not like people- and that doesn't mean we don't love them!)!
@Ann Gough There is definitely a time and place for clear, concise explanations, but ANY kind of TRIAGE is NOT the time nor the place!!! Just step way back and let the professionals do their jobs!!!
Hell, you wrote what I was thinking!
This man is fearless. He actually went into that cage moments after the dog tried to eat him alive. Fearless. Very sure of himself and he talks us through every step as he explains the behavior of the dog. He's right on point, I can actually see his work come to fruition coincide with his words..that is amazing to me.
He's definitely not fearless! He is experienced and knows what to do and how to act. Knowledge+experience. Don't try to make him into something not human. If he had been "fearless", he would have went in without the shield and noose...which would have been foolhardy (and stupid).
Yes he is! Most people would just have the dog put to sleep! Thanks to the owner for giving this dog to a trainer who has the heart and capabilities to deal with this animal's problem!
Good job on a very nice dog.
@@WebShaman01he is fearless. He has experience and can read body language better than most, but he is still human acting on what he *thinks* is better, doesn't mean it will turn out like all the other past times. No dog is the same. A lot of dog trainers are indeed fearful of dogs like this despite their experience. So fearless nevertheless
Look, I work with dogs in military security areas. Believe me when I say those people are not fearless! That would make them namely inhuman (re: not human, which they most certainly are!). You and yours are doing them a great disservice by insisting that they are "fearless", instead of recognizing their experience and training. I've seen dogs that are so far gone that they have had to be put down from a distance (because no-one would go near them. NOONE). So just stop when you all are behind@@mel999.
The people thst call stuff like this "animal abuse" are the ones that would end up putting this dog down
Not necessarily. Disagreeing with a technique doesn't mean they wouldn't try other things.. and possibly discover a new one.

It’s not really abuse. But it works in the end even if it’s right or wrong the most you could do is make it your own job if you have experience
Not really. I would use positive reinforcement and lots of time and patience. I don't call it animal abuse, but I would certainly not let this dude near to any of my dogs. And when he put the e-collar on, I stopped to watch the video.

He just needed a good alpha. Someone gentle but firm to say " enough of that crap" in a language he could understand.
Every dog I have personally owned from puppy age, I hand feed and stick my hand in their bowl while they are eating from 8 weeks on to avoid resource guarding. Any tech I use on a dog , I always use on myself first, which my wife gets a kick out of. A+ video.
I have done this with all of my dogs too, regardless of breed. I always have little ones coming over and they pretty much always end up at the dogs bowl lol. So to ensure children were not bit during resource guarding, I do this. My 4 yo GSD has done this a few times with her beef bones and we take them away. Once she chills out, we return the bone (rewarding the chill behavior).
They need correction sometimes just like growing children. They aren’t perfect.
I know this is an old comment, but I do this too. Both the hand in bowls (I sometimes leave a treat to give positive association) and I also shock myself on 3 every time before I put the e collar on my dog. I do it to remind myself it's not that bad and to test that the battery isn't dying. My husband laughs at me too. Without the collar she could never safely be off leash due to prey drive, it's an awesome device.
@JOHNNA GORDON🥩🥩 Most of us in these comments use stim or vibration collars~ stim uses electricity, but it is similar to a TENS unit like chiropractors use (although way less powerful). It feels more like being tickled than being shocked. I’ve tried stim on myself, up to nearly 40. My dogs working level is a 3, but we both prefer vibrations🤷🏼

Thanks so much for watching! :) ❤️
Yup I have used those collars and had it work very very well. But I've also had a rescue shepherd it would be a huge mistake to use it on.. And she was just as aggressive at first as the dog in the video, but for different reasons.. She attacked any person or dog or child that got near her, and it didn't take long to figure out it was from pure fear and she was simply trying to chase everything away from her before they could hurt her. This dog would work herself into a severe panic attack, shivering and all, if you simply clicked a clicker or clipped your fingernails where she could hear it. A remote collar would have destroyed her.. A few months of desensitization and confidence building and she has been an awesome dog ever since. Every dog and problem is different.
This guys intuition and understanding of dog behavior is so cool. I also love how he understands how human behavior has screwed up dogs, but he doesn’t make people feel bad about it.
His techniques could be better. Staring down at the dog isn’t exactly the best approach.

My white German Shepherd is the same age.
I agree. I love his sweatshirt, “NO BAD DOGS.” The front should say, “ONLY BAD OWNERS!!!” 🐕❤️
No it shouldn't and his shirt says exactly what it says. No Bad Dogs...some owners are good and have bad dogs. Stop acting like u don't know this.
Maurandis Berger there aren’t bad dogs, the owner should’ve trained them properly or gotten them trained, that’s it.
Maurandis Berger you do realize dogs aren’t born “bad” they’re raised “bad” they learn everything from the owners.
Not true, some animals do come out different. Some are even born down syndrome...I raised Dobies with my dad for years and some dogs just can't get right. To each they own I'm not here to debate
Saying there are no bad dogs, just bas owners, is like saying there are no bad people, just bad parents
There is truth to both but if course there are special cases
Sadly, if that dog went to a shelter, he'd be dead less than 24 hours after he arrived.
Staff and volunteers rarely have the knowledge to deal with that intense aggression and will simply write it off as unsalvageable.
That dog isn't for someone who is not educated though, for without continuing support and redirection training he will slip right back into the resource guarding.
Beautiful puppy when he relaxed and started smiling at you!
Good on you for seeing his nature beneath the guarding!
Jahna Derr and for your average, everyday person that is exactly is what would need to happen. This dog could not be adopted by anyone but an seasoned professional. Luckily for this dog he has owners who are willing to get him to a trainer.
I don’t think any workers think they’re untrainable. It’s moreso the fact aggressive dogs need more work and are a greater risk for families with children and multi dog homes- and they dont have the space, time, or funds to care for these reactive dogs. They feel it would be better to give the open spots to friendly dogs who would fit better in more environments.
He saved this dog for sure. That was awesome 👍
Tom this a technique I learned years ago. When you walk up to his kennel and he jumps and snarls, just yawn and/or stretch. Then turn your back to him. Stand/sit by the kennel until he calms down. Continue this many times a day until he calms himself down. Good luck.
I have a dog like this at the shelter I work at. He has decided that my coworkers and I are his job to protect. He's also a young Shepard with hip dysplasia that will require surgery within the next few years (according to a vet's exam with xrays). Many people have been angry with us when we've denied their adoption applications for him because they have children. We're trying very hard to find the right home for him, because he wants to be a good dog. 💜
It’s amazing how that dog was trying to eat your face off…. And you’re still calm and confident enough to sit right next to him…..
no muzzle….. and I guess the dog fed off your energy and relaxed. Love the videos.

Kind of like dog harnesses years ago suddenly became big and omg so much more humane than a collar 🙄
I like them for puppies for walking sitting training. They can't resist easily because of the body control. Also many more reasons. There are some dogs need one for life because they're more body touch responsive. Or just don't like things around their necks. The harness is a very helpful tool but people also be aware of their dogs because the harness might turn out to not be enough when they start getting bigger. Use a standard collar or prong if you want, or is necessary but don't refuse to just because you think it's inhumane. Do what's needed to control your dog or get rid of it. Train the dog in front of you. I have a dog that can't work off a vibration, stresses out and shuts down.
It depends on the dog. For my dog, the vibration is a bigger correction then the stim of an ecollar.
Vibrations can work in extreme cases because it can be pretty intense for dogs.
Every dog is different and should be trained on a case by case basis!
Tom says: most of the dogs find the trim (on a very low level) much less uncomfortable than the vibrate. I guess it also depends on wich collar system you use. I have done rescue work since my feet hit the ground as a kid and I am 66 years young now. You are a realistic and kind hearted man going out of your way and putting yourself in potentially dangerous positions to stop a very destructive behavior. In most other shelters sadly he would have been euthanized. In some it would have been in the front door, assessed in seconds as hopelessly aggressive, euthanized and out to the freezer in a plastic bag. They can't take up valuable cage space with an unadoptable animal and a dangerous one at that. Thank God your there to help these animals understand and change.

My dog does this when someone comes to the door, he wants to chew your head off....as soon as the door is open he's fine....(shep husky mix)....He's from a shelter and absolutely loves children....
Actually, I have a german shepherd hound mix and she plays like that with my partner. She never bites him but she can sound really ugly like that. But he’s trained her that if he snaps his fingers she shakes all the worked up tension and becomes docile towards him. German Shepherds are really smart they just want to obey but you have to be dominant with them because they’re run right over you if you don’t show authority. I had to learn to be more authoritative with this canine child I have. She was a terror when she was a puppy. We would have vocal fights and she would jump up and tear at me. Now she’s my best friend and we’re always together. But it was not like that in the beginning.
My 4 Siberian Huskies does that when they steal from each other. A chew bone for example. They always stop when I come over and take the bone in order to stop the fight. Huskies don’t like when other dogs steals their food. Other than that they are very people happy. Sure they howl and growl when visitors come. But once I allow them inside then everything is fine... however I do not recommend people to enter my house without permission, cause then they get pissed. But then again no one should enter someone’s house without permission to begin with.
That kind of snarling is pretty common with hot blood shepherds like gsd, Mal's and dutchies. A lot of people have a hard time with getting them to chill. Takes a lot of work. People are usually not up to the task.
I like how people with lap dogs put their two cents in telling this guy how to do his job.
I like how someone thinks someone doing “their job” can’t improve or is infallible.
I like how you are so dismissive about "lap dogs", as if they are any less difficult to train and work with than any other dog

Yes! Our puppy doesn't resource guard food but she does with toys. She also is very timid of new ppl and dogs too so it seems to go together
@@erinnstothart9739 Take her out and run her socks off. THEN come home and work with her. Calm tired dogs do better at training time, usually. For timid, just ignore her in the presence of others and have them do the same. If she is ignored, she's much more likely to explore--if she comes forward, give a quiet 'yes' or 'good', and then let her do what she wants--no aggression or rudeness, but exploration is good. The other person(s) can say 'Oh, hi.' in a conversational tone and then just ignore her until a few times of this--she'll gain more confidence and tolerate being noticed without ducking for cover.
As for the toys...as soon as she gets possessive, take it away--firmly and quietly, an immediate consequence....she gets nasty, toy disappears. Not a game, just a fact. She may not be able to have toys very much at first--but she'll learn.
Patience and persistence are PRICELESS.

5:45 homie stopped barking when he actually came in 😂
All bark no bite lmao

He effectively took possession of the gate. He claimed it and the dog backed down. If the dog were truly hostile (against humans) it would not have mattered and the dog would have attacked regardless. This shows that the dog is not as hostile as it sounds. Once the resource it was guarding is 'lost' the behavior changed. I've seen similar behavior during playtime with my two dogs.. not hostility but.. for example.. throw a toy and the smaller female loves to fetch it and bring it back. However, if her larger male brother goes after the toy she will relent and let him have it. She used to not do this until one time they both went after the toy at the same time.. collided mid-air and sent her spawling. Similar behavior thusly produce.. the toy/play are the resource for both of the dogs.. but altho she is most interested in the play/toy.. once he gets involved she will step back. I actually have to make them take turns once he gets interested or else she will never get to play lol.
@@uoabigaillevey I was about to comment something very similar. Dog is definitely not truly aggressive. Just seems extremely unsure, because if not, the second he opened the gate, the dog would've actively tried to tag him. I love seeing good training content, I dislike how clickbait-y the title is. Pretty lame.
@@uoabigaillevey How do you get them to take turns? Do you use a command?
I got caught near a coyote den as a kid. Just walked up on it, heading home from a friend's house, and cutting through the bush - at dusk... there were only a few of them - but they looked at me as if I was a lucky find! I didn't know what to do - so I did what you do with any dog - told them "no" sharply and pointed my stick... and they paused! Shaking uncontrollably, I kept warning them with a low voice, pointing my stick and carefully picking my way through the bramble around them. I probably walked a quarter of a mile - backwards - because I was so scared they would follow me, but they just watched me - and when I got the house in sight, I ran like a Jack rabbit and didn't stop till I was in the door.
They're nothing to be afraid of. Talk to them.

Sam Philipp he’s saying that people abuse their dogs so much and that makes them very aggressive and not a lot of them get lucky to get a second chance to live so they get put down.
No one will ever know the pain and trauma abuse and cruelty a dog has been through! Thank you for people like him that actually care and put time !! All dogs want to be loved and show there love ❤️
Not all dogs with issues r abused, poor breeding can often result in poor personality traits, some that would make you think it’s been battered when the reality is it hasn’t!
No question the vast majority of dogs have issues caused by owners who weren't able/willing to provide proper structure/socialization/training for their pet. Puppy isn't housebroken in a month, jumps on guests, or chews on the baseboards and it ends up living in the yard. Now it's digging and barking, a few months later neighbors are complaining and it ends up in a shelter. Now it's a gangly, unruly, adolescent dog, looking for a home among dozens and dozens of the same. This is a FAR more typical scenario than any outright abuse.
Nothing suggested he was abused nor does this behavior come out from being abused. It can develop at a young age ( as they fight for resources in the wild; they still hold 1% splice of wolf DNA ) and the matter of it being corrected or how it’s being corrected - can contain abuse but we know little of the details. Dogs connect the dots between how they act and the reaction they get; if they growl or snap at you when trying to take a bowl, toy, person or any resource and you back off without correcting it, the dog is going to think “I’m allowed to do this”. It eventually gets to the point of being dangerous by allowing to act this way. This is why you need to be firm with dogs in this behavior otherwise they’re going to be on death row if they attack/kill a child, an adult ( depending on breed ) or another animal of the house because of resource guarding.
@@hippiebits2071 not just structure and training but timing during training as well a well trained dog is different then a well behaved one

@@tomdavisofficial Also Intro (really like the new one) was way louder than the video. No big deal, of course. In any case: Awesome job on the dog. We own a white swiss shepherd (I am always surprised you call them "German" in the US) and he is the friendliest dog possible. When seeing the one from the video, in the beginning he looked nothing like ours and when you take him out of the cage (mouth open, relaxed body language, interested looks) he looks exactly like it. :-D Attitude matters, also in dogs.

Sidenote: White "German shepherd" not realy exist, means more "Canada Shepherd" or "Swiss shepherd" . Here in germany you will not find any "white" german shepherds.
AKC recognises the WGSD and the only thing they cannot do is in the breed ring. I've had judges tell me that it's too bad they aren't allowed in the breed ring, my WGSD were champions in structure, and temperment. movement. UKC said the same thing. I just coulden't get there. You need to look up the history of these dogs. There were white shepherds at the beginning of the breed and it was Hitler who banned them because he thought they were inferior. You need to find and read about this wonderful breed. I have had them for years along with Czech bred dogs. My first Assistant Service dogs were the best at every thing. Tom is a great trainer and behaviorist and I have used his methods sporadically in the past. Tom, keep up the good work.
Wow, I am so impressed! Speaking as an owner who used an e-collar on our aggresive dog for 8 years when in public. He guarded us with a passion especially my son. With the e-collar we were able to eventually off leash our dog in parks with limited distractions (not busy). Just a quick reminder from the collar helped Zeus focus on a command and that his job was to listen and pay attention to us. The question I have is around removing the use of the collar. We were never able to wean him off of its use. What does that process look like? Is it always possible? Interesting Zeus was a white shepherd also. He passed three years ago at age 12 with a quality of life he would not have had without the e-collar.
Love your videos!

I have a Yorkie Maltese mix who is a runner. He would literally bolt whenever opportunity presented itself. We live on a well traveled country road and he would head straight for the road every time. I know he would have even taken chase to a coyote or bob cat if he was ever given the chance. Long story short, I bought a simple "shock" collar at Petsmart put it on him, and when he started to run off I gave him a tone only, then when he didn't obey I gave him a "shock" (actually just a vibration. I tested it on my own hand) From that point on all I needed to do was give him a tone and he would do an about face and come back to me. Problem solved. We can go for walks now unleashed and when he wanders too far I give him a beep and he comes right back. BEST PURCHASE EVER!! I'm sure it saved his life and my sanity.
You cared enough to work with your dog to keep him safe. I wish more people were like you. Peace
You know, I’ve always thought those things were cruel but it sounds like you use it in the best possible way. Especially if you don’t even need the shock now, that’s actually quite genius! Sometimes we have to save them from themselves and you did what you had to. You sound like a great pet parent and may your little dude live to be 18 :)
I have a VERY similar story with my dog. But we live in LA and the traffic is insane. One day my dog( Australian Shepherd) escaped and literally almost got hit by a car. I bought her an e collar and trained her at home with the beeping sound. She NEVER escaped again. We go for off leash hikes, to the beach.. I agree with you 100%. Best purchase ever!! People have to understand how amazing this tool is if used correctly.
It truly does give a pet owner peace of mind. My dog is high prey driven and cannot resist the chase of a bunny or squirrel. She listens when I tell her to leave it but she is so fast that she can be in the road 100 feet away before the words even leave my lips. She knows the tone also and I can press that faster than I can speak lol. But when she has the collar on, just knowing it’s there deters her. She is a shepherd. Very smart. I would do anything to keep her safe. I have been criticized for the collar but she needs it. I love letting her off leash to run and play on walks and this collar allows us to do that.
The dog was in a tizzy.... alone, without attention and involvement, for to long. He changed fast with some involvement and interaction.
Neat to heal the situation.
Thank you for showing us this raw interaction. I about died when you said he was 9mo old! So glad his parents are getting him help now.
Hey UCA, Watch your sound levels, the music is way too high and loud compared to your speak level...
I found this fascinating. Amazing how a pro like him can get inside the dogs head to understand the motivation for a certain behavior. You would really have to be ignorant to think what he is doing is abuse.
Those are the kind I bring home. The ones that no one wants because they don't understand them.
What I use to say: the problem is always on the other end of the leash.

We’ve had two German Shepard dogs. One was a white Shepard when my kids were young. She was the sweetest best behaved dog we ever had! I always referred to her as my third child 💖
I've only encountered 3 white shepherds. Coincidentally they all had issues. 2 of them were rescue dogs. Lead me to believe that there was some kind of problem with the white ones. Put me off them.
I guess it comes down to the way they are treated and it's not connected to the breeding after all.
Same with my white shepherd! I’ve had soooooo many shepherds in my life, and nothing compared to my white one. Wayyyy more sweeter, listens WAY better, learned potty training in a week of having him as a puppy, he loves baths and he’s just all around simple. I’m so lucky! I suspect a lot of that was fear based aggression. An awful lot of dogs find kennels terrifying. They're usually a different dog once you take them for a walk & get them one to one (I volunteer at one). US shelters don't seem interested in giving them time to settle in to a completely strange environment before assessing temperament like we do in the UK.
Hopefully the owners can follow through with your guidance and everyone in the house being 100 on the same page.

the pager vibrated instead of shocking? that’s honestly kinda cool
Yep I have one for my dog that has a tone, vibrate, and shock feature. They literally make training so much easier if used properly. To the point you can stop using it after awhile and the dog just instinctively knows what you want them to do.
My parents' have two rescue dogs (they are my furry family members, ones my sister, the other my brother!), and the female one gets wound up to a far lower level and less dangerous. Think of it as a whine that builds. (The other dog is like 'here we go again!' and 'can you please do something about her, she's annoying me!', his reaction's funny!). I like to think of it as audible anxiety (typically when my parents leave the property, house, room, go from lower level to upper level, and without inviting her). When it was really bad and frequent, my parents literally researched various methods for levels of pain/discomfort/additional problems/potential things going wrong with them (mainly any danger for the dog!). They found a vibrate and spray function. The spray was distilled water, and the vibrate is less than my phone. And yes, both my parents tested both functions at different ranges on themselves to ensure functionning is good and consistent rather than at different pressures/strengths. They would verbally warn and press vibrate, and then verbally say the command a second time and use the spray (turned low enough to be 'what was that?' rather than 'ppppfffft can't see, turn off the water!').They did not want something with a shock function (for their personal reasons!). They also found something with ways that actively prevent any risk of shocking them. It works. Now just placing the collar on helps to change the behaviour. Most of the time the pre-action preparation is enough, otherwise one more additional verbal command is enough, without that collar!
I'd be comfortable using that, no need to shock the poor thing.
Good info! Loved hearing "take kind control" attitude, the concern over the dog's well being and using tools to correct behavior in a kind/positive way. 99% of dog behavior is bad human behavior.
You are THE MAN! No BS and straight to the point. You're not a professional until you've worked with a Aggressive dog!
