    With some very speedy updates, Wack0 got the maciNTosh project working on Blue & White G3 machines. In this video I go through the steps required to turn your 1999 Power Mac into a Windows NT on PPC machine.

    Great video! I love colorful transparent plastics. Wish it's more prevalent now.

    Great vid, this has been giving me absolute hell on my Blue & White - it's at the point I've got the HD as master and CD as slave on the secondary IDE bus and ARC hardlocks for me. So still figuring this out on my end. :c
    Also, a bit of friendly advice. I'd strongly suggest getting that Maxell clock battery out of there - they are known to violently explode and destroy your computer. A CR2032 adapter is a safer bet as they're far less likely to leak.

      Yeah I saw your notes. Very strange! I'd probably start swapping things out (IDE cable, RAM, etc) just to make sure its nothing simple like that. Wonder if your IDE controller is running a slightly different revision than the one I have?
      ...and I am keenly aware of that battery! I even made a video about it a while back: ruclips.net/video/JvSpCgtZO68/видео.html Its just hanging out for now as it is still providing enough voltage to keep the PRAM data retained and this Mac isn't going into any sort of long term storage with the maxellbomb in it.

    I don't think I have ever seen a PowerPC Windows NT machine in the wild.

      Don't worry, the battery will be removed before it can hurt anything - its still alive enough to keep the PRAM settings. I actually made a video about the maxellbombs a while back: ruclips.net/video/JvSpCgtZO68/видео.html

    Really neat project. Does the PowerMac's built-in GUI boot menu still work when both drives are plugged in? It would be very neat to see a triple-boot machine for Mac OS 9, OS X, and Windows NT.

    • @jonobst
      @jonobst  Месяц назад

      No, if I plugged in the primary channel IDE drive it would only boot Mac OS. You can however partition the secondary channel to support booting of Mac OS 8/9 & X and have a dual/triple boot in theory that way. The instructions note:
      "The OS X installer, and just booting OS 8/OS 9, will error if a valid MBR is present on the disk at all, which is required for NT. In ARC firmware, go to Run firmware setup then Reboot to OSX install or OS8/OS9 if you wish to boot to those listed operating systems."

    I was wondering about the IBM work stations with Power PC CPUs that natively supported Windows NT in the 1990s. These machines are so rare now and this is a good replacement for that if you had apps that ran on the IBM Power PCs. Have you tried to install on any IBM Power PC work stations?

    • @jonobst
      @jonobst  Месяц назад +1

      I haven't installed NT on an IBM PowerPC server, though I do have an IBM Power server running AIX here with me currently.

    Hey I see you still have your Maxell barrel battery on the mainboard. Get it removed AASP, as they go bang and squirt out really corrosive liquid

      @@jonobst sure thing. I am interested how long will they last as the CR2032 has much less capacity than 1/2 AA 3.6V one. I remember using Mac SE/30 from 1989 in 2010 or 2011 with original Varta battery and it was still holding date. But on my PowerMac G4 AGP I had to replace it probably for the 3rd or 4th time since I got it in 2007, so I guess it lasts 4 years at most. Most likely SE/30 had much lower current drain from the PRAM battery than G3/G4

    • @jonobst
      @jonobst  16 дней назад

      @@michvod so far in the SE/30 its been 2 years and still running - not sure about total length of life yet, though.

    • @michvod
      @michvod 16 дней назад

      @@jonobst SE/30 has really efficient RTC circuit that uses almost no current. Those machines have a mechanical power switch so the power gets cut to the power supply/mainboard completely. So the onboard RTC spends most of its time running on internal battery, as even when those were new most of them weren't used more than few hours a day. Newer machines have standby (+5VSB) all the time as they also have soft-power. I would guess that their RTC circuit isn't that efficient as those were meant to be plugged in all the time, so the PRAM battery only kicks in when there is a power outage... I could put a microamp meter in series with the battery and see what values we get on different vintage Macs :)

      @jonobst  15 дней назад +1

      @@michvod sounds like a good concept for a video, the usage of the battery in both plugged in and off and unplugged and off states of the G3 compared to no power on the SE/30 ;)

    I just tried the v0.05 and my B&W looks like it boots holding 'c' but then my monitor goes blank and into inactive state. I'm trying to find another video card, thinking maybe that is the issue. it's the original ATI Rage Pro128 with only VGA port. Thoughts?

      @jonobst  21 день назад

      I am also running the same stock ATI Rage 128 (p/n 109-57400-00). There were some problems early on with video not working correctly, maybe worth going back to an older version and seeing if it is a recent break? Never had a no signal issue, though - might be putting out a resolution your monitor doesn't support. What monitor are you using?

    • @jonobst
      @jonobst  Месяц назад

      As it stands right now, it will not. It does sounds promising for these models either, per the list of supported hardware at github.com/Wack0/maciNTosh
      That is, the following systems:
      iMac G3 (tray-loading)
      Power Macintosh G3 (Blue & White) "Yosemite"
      Macintosh PowerBook G3 Bronze Keyboard "Lombard"
      Power Macintosh G4 PCI "Yikes!"
      The ARC firmware itself runs at a low enough level that it should be compatible with Old World systems using the same chipset too, but there is currently no loader for these systems; these are the following:
      Power Macintosh G3 (beige)
      Macintosh PowerBook G3 Series "Wallstreet", "PDQ"
      There may be issues on your hardware.
