Apple //e test, try and troubleshoot
I have a pile of Apple //e machines that may or may not work, and I also have laryngitis! Allow me to throw on a funky royalty-free track to cover my raspy voice up and let's blast through these machines and separate the wheat from the chaff (or the good apples from the bad apples in this case!

What a score! I got a load of new UMC’s 6502s off eBay NOS. They work great and we’re mfg. in 1990.
Not finished watching yet but love the music. It gives the 80's/90's pc gaming vibs. Reminds me of StarControl(1 through whatever)
#savethevoice
You think you could provide some pointers? I have followed step by step to the T, but when I left it over night as well, it didn’t load the new os. I’m trying to load the OS from the EIF screen when booting, but it freezes and is stuck in the “recovery screen” after I click on the EIF option. And asking me to log in to iCloud. I connected to WiFi and tried logging in, but WiFi disconnects on its own and I can’t log in, therefore stuck in the recovery mode screen. Any idea what it could be?
I've never done a tiger install, then again, I haven't done a whole lot of Mac installs as I haven't had daily usage of Macs since the apple days of the 80's then into PC during the 90's and Linux in the late 90's and 2k's
Briliant :D
Have you tried to run Apple software on it such as Mainstage? I don't think it will work.
Anyone else getting a reboot load and doesn’t install or getting the blank screen for not os installed?
I really do need to finish setting up my work area for cool stuff like this. Although I don't work on macs, I do work with ESP32 boards and some minor modding and such with a few other projects.
Sweet!
Going forward maybe consider an USB to SATA adapter?
nice brother i like this
I always have fun watching your down-to-earth and realistic videos, Jon! Keep it going!
Hey thanks, I appreciate it!
cool video!
Great video Jon! What brand is that external SCSI drive that you had hooked up to this Mac?
It is this one: ruclips.net/video/oNM1nJyJ80E/видео.html (though the drive inside is no longer original)
The Apple branded RAM sticks that I've found over the years in my SE's have been either 100ns, 120ns or 150ns. Also, when the Mac is lying with the face down, I've found it easier to just squeeze on the sides while trying to lift the back piece off. I try to avoid using my nails.
Its actually pretty hard these days to find 30 pin SIMMs that are *that slow*! For around $20 to$25 you can get modern made 60 or 70ns 30 pin 1MB RAM that works just fine - though if 150ns works and you already have it - by all means use it! Sometimes striking the Mac with open palms in an upward direction (while it is lying face down) helps to free the back case from the front - kind of like an upward clapping motion, but with a Mac in the middle.
this is the shizznat
I hated working on these things. Even replacing a hard drive. So many pieces to remove to get to where you needed to go. Tiny delicate wires. Different size screw heads. All black interior so it was difficult to see what you were doing.
Absolutely right that these disks would go into the trash. Along with the catalogs and flyers in newspapers. Crazy prices today on ebay. Just musing I could probably payoff my mortgage or at least my car if I had back all the stuff like this I trashed!!!
Yeah I think we're all in that boat. I'd really like to get some machines back that I divested myself of 20 or more years ago :(
Did it not beep when it didnt find a keyboard?
Oddly enough, it did not.
camera needs to be closer
Agree - I'm always trying to improve my video production! Appreciate the feedback!
Barbarically 😂....liked and subbed. Up late and fighting my Sequoia install now, booted up and I accidently clicked no on installing to my drive and now it won't boot unless it's from EFI and I cant seem to get it to install to the disk via OpenCore from the home screen so just doing a complete slooooow reinstallation. 🤞🏻
The fact that the internet recovery is still working in 2025 is incredible kind of support. Love that
okay it needs a tweak but it works
yeah just a minor tweak - and yes its a good thing that Apple has done.
I love how you have my first 2 games I hot for it
I wonder if someone was able to port ET over to the CV...lol. But yeah, my family was too broke when this was released to get one, let alone any of the attachments. I did get to play the Atari but never owned one of those. My first console was an Odyseey 2000, but that was a few years old by the time we got one.
Possible, but converting from 6502 code to z80 code would definitely take a bit of work - and likely not worth it, especially for a game like ET!
The 5150 is not an IBM PC XT but an IBM PC. The XT is the 5160
You are 100% correct! This was one of those things I was so "sure" about I didn't fact check myself. Lesson learned - thank you.
My first pc in 1986 after the IBM 3270 mainframe terminal console I also had it at school in 1984 but I never used, I only built minicomputers with the z80 😄
I spent a couple of years at tech school learning to program on 3270 machines. I don't remember a ton of it these days, but working on something like that was pretty awesome - in my opinion.
lucked out with that expansion card
For sure!
U rename the tittle to How to remove rubberized coatings not fix
Some early AT keyboards that used to have the AT/XT switch had it later removed from the board and jumpered inside. That is until the next revision removed completely the feature. Your Model M being PS/2 I believe is a later version that have the XT mode completely removed. However, if you have a AT keyboard can just open it and look inside if there is the AT/XT switch or jumper footprint present and can modify it. I find an AT keyboard from Compaq that had this feature inside (the switch was not populated but instead was a jumper wire solded) and I just added a suitable switch and cut open the access slot on the back. Edit: Actually this is the IBM PC and not the IBM XT. You are right, this is the original and the first one. I wonder if this can use XT-IDE to boot from a HDD or CF card.
I have an XT-IDE in my Compaq Portable 1 - I should yank it out and give it a try here. Google Gemini says it will work!
It's so clean, it looks like they unboxed it and tossed it straight in the trash. Great rescue!
Right? What a great find!
I B M
I haven't even gotten past the 10 second mark of the video and I can already hear it trying to boot up.
This was awesome. Thanks for doing this.
Just for clarification. The 5150 is not the XT. The XT is the 5160. So it is the REAL original you have there 🙂
Yep this was one of those "I know what i'm talking about so I'm not going to look it up" moments where...I didn't. Thanks for the correction!
You got lucky it is working. Great find indeed!!
It was just a little sleepy, I guess!
Cool. This is where that all began.

Thank you for the mention, Jon!
Everyone needs more Ron's Computer Videos in their lives!
@@jonobst Ron does seem to have his hand in everything vintage Mac!
Oh man those 1-bit graphics....miss 'em.
The sticking point is still the maximum 4MB of RAM, which makes running System 7.x, particularly 7.5 or later not much fun. If you want System 6 to fly, fair enough otherwise $130 might just buy an SE/30 logic board, which will fit into an SE case.
Exactly! That's really the biggest problem here - but if you can find an SE/30 board for $130 that would be the best bet, but as those machines keep going up in price, that's going to be a pretty tough price point to hit. Broken/non-working SE/30's are selling for > $200 on eBay.
Interesting, love seeing stuff about mods...even from awhile ago. Always gives me more ideas and not enough time.
Well done vid. Thanks!!
Makes me want to go through my Macbook Pro is put this on it. I honestly don't have much use for it at this time but hey, it would be something to tinker with.
You should do another video where you put something like Ubuntu on the ol Mb Pro. I might do that myself.
@@Deadphyre I am thinking about putting linux on one of my black Polycarb Macbooks - I like the way they look best of all modern Apple laptops, but there's no modernizing them with OCLP - Linux is the answer!
@@jonobst Need to absolutely make sure the Linux install has 32-bit UEFI
it's possible connect original disk drive 1541 with BMC64 and raspberry???
The answer is...sort of but its a lot of effort and probably not worth it. See more here: github.com/randyrossi/bmc64/issues/27
Does continuity camera work?
I finally got around to testing this - and yes, it does!
Great video! I hope you had a great Christmas, and I hope you have a Happy New Year!
Thanks for your support all year - Happy New Year!
