I recently picked up this early Power Mac G3 Blue & White - one of the first produced. But, it has a pretty weird quirk... so obviously, we have to try and install an obscure OS on it!

I picked up one of those G3 Powermacs around 2010, with the scsi card missing. I was not aware of this problem with the ide controller. Now I finally understand why it crashed all the time on ide.
Oh yes the Blue & White G3. The first revision definitely had some logic board bugs. I gave away two or three of them 2007-2008, from the college trash pile, though I don't recall which revision they were. I think one was a server if I recall correctly. .... I always wanted to play around with Rhapsody, but never tried.
I totally remember installing Mac OS X Server! Haven't thought about it in a long long time.
I’ve always wanted to see the first versions of Mac osx. There’s a keynote when they first showed off mac OSX and it still had the classic skin to it. Like they had the backend complete but didn’t have the UI designed yet.
Seeing them display a “Mac OSX” wallpaper on a classic GUI was interesting to see.
From my understanding the Mac Os X GUI was already an existing theme for classic Mac. More than likely when Rhapsody was being developed they probably had no intention of changing the classic look and feel, until someone started apply themes to give it new look and everyone said WOW! Of course I wasn't there so I'm speculating.
Rhapsody was the only beta operating system version I refused to install on my Mac back in mid-late 90s because of too many changes from System 8.x. Thanks for the video!

As a former owner of one of these unreliable machines - the IDE controller only became unstable with drives over a certain size. I believe it was 8 gigs. SCSI card was not standard on the early ones because the drives that came with the machines were under the size limit and completely stable. It was only when you did aftermarket upgrades that things went badly. Which of course meant Apple basically got to act like they weren't responsible. SCSI card was something you had to pay for. Apple had no interest in fixing their own issues.

But the G3 and G4 were the most noticeable. The G3 blue and white was just a different class of computer from the later mirror-drive-doors G4, despite the case being almost identical.
Also, the case wasn't *totally* identical between them. Each version did its own thing with the design.

My favourite memory of this machine’s introduction at MacWorld 1999 was that it was so easy to access the internals that attendees stole all the RAM modules from the demo units.
Don’t forget when you’re in the classic Mac OS within OS X Server, you can go into the multitasking menu in the top right to go between classic and X

The ADB port on the Powermac G3 was likely also added for compatibility with software dongles such as for Logic by emagic, however it's always nice to have a fun keypad :P

What was wrong with it?
I owned a Power Mac 8500 in the late '90s, and I was so very envious of the Blue & White G3. It looked beautiful, and it was so easy to upgrade. Whenever I upgraded anything in my Power Mac 8500 (which I did many times, as I kept it for many years), I would nick my fingers or knuckles on some sharp edge because it was so cramped to work inside. I swear it was inevitable!
Same for me with my Beige G3.
I upgraded from the 7100 to the B&W G3. It was AWESOME. The ability to upgrade it was really just great.
The PPC G3 beige Macs were the most standard-friendly upgradable ones; you can install pc dimms, pc pata disks (as well as legacy SCSI) and even use a pc PSU by way of a jumper in the motherboard that enabled to switch between Apple-PSU or pc ones.You can put a floopy drive, a zip drive and a dvd-rw drive even in the desktop horizontal space tight G3.
By means of standard PCI slots you can add usb ports and video/sound cards too.
Is there any list of DVD drives that will work in it? I’ve read they can be picky about them. I have a beige g3 desktop I’ve upgraded with a blue and white g3 rage 128 that has a DVD decoder. Unfortunately the patched version of apple DVD doesn’t work with USB DVD drives.
That doesn't really change with any of the G4 models that followed it using the same basic system architecture design and implementing more current standards, as they were being introduced. The reason PC hardware is interchangeable is because it adherese to the same standards. And this is rather universal in workstation class systems of the period whether they use Intel x86, SPARC64, IBM POWER or PPC64 CPU ASIC. Major difference being that Sun Microsystems and Apple and IBM use IEEE-1275 standard firmware, while PC hardware is using a non-standardized firmware system, the BIOS, which is literally based on reverse engineered BIOS code from the IBM XT 8088 to this day. Two major reverse engineered BIOS solutions having gained a duopoly in licensing their BIOS for IBM PC compatible clones in the 1980s, American Megatreds or AMI and Phoenix Bios. Neither is a standard and both are barely serviceable kludged garbage.
And because these systems are not intercompatible, you need to replace the non-standard BIOS firmware in PC addon hardware with a IEEE-1275 compatible version if you want a OpenFirmware to be able to initialize and use the card when booting up the system. But, if you're not trying to use a PC graphics card or hard disk controller, that's not necessary.
UEFI changes this. And the reference platform for Intel EFI PCs is Apple MacBook Pro 1,1 Mac Pro and Xserve. The hardware being designed by Intel exclusively and for the express purpose of launching a mass market product of their EFI PC prototype, to have a sufficiently large user base to receive feedback with and Apple fanboys being so delusional they think that a system that boots any IA32 OS and is given an officially supported BIOS backwards compatibility layer by means of a software update for the EFI system and operating system, that this is somehow not an Intel PC system, even though, it meets every definition of the word and is officially supported by Microsoft for running their OS.
Also, Apple and Intel fanboys refused to believe me, when I stated that, the purpose of this platform is to serve as the reference system for Intel to develop firmware the meets the new UEFI specification. Apple's systems being also the ones that first adopt this UEFI standard compliant firmware.
And that this means that OS X will run on any UEFI "PC" just as well with very minor modifications, if it even needs any.

They need a sledgehammer to be perfectly frank. I have one of the A-revision B/Ws. Apart from the flaky controller they are prone to just malfunctioning for no apparent reason. Refusing to boot for days on end and then just working as if nothing had happened. That sort of thing. They do make the ideal Rhapsody box though, thanks to that ADB port freeing up a precious USB port. Just get a later revision for peace of mind.
Did everyone noticed that, in the "breakout-like" demo, the "racket" was bouncing a ball which was very similar (or identical) to the Amiga's bouncing ball?

A SCSI B&W 400 was my first Mac, bought used super cheap in 2003. It was a totally usable desktop for a couple of years until I replaced it with a hackintosh in 2006. Upgraded the stock 9gb to dual 146gb.
Those original versions of Rhapsody only worked with a very small subset of SCSI cards. And really only truly liked Adaptec SCSI cards, which were ridiculously expensive for the time. Especially ones with the Mac firmware. On top of that, Rhapsody only loved a very small subset of the Adaptec cards. You should try to get one to keep on the shelf for projects like this. It'll save a lot of mystery in the future.
The venerable AHA2940UW was a popular choice and the PC version can be flashed to Mac if you can find the Power Domain firmware.
I have a soft spot for the blue g3 back in 2001 😮 I was just out of high school and wanted to work for icnet(local dial isp rip) and they were only hiring for a Apple 🖥️ tech so having played Carmen Sandiego in the school library over the years as my only mac experience I told them I was obviously their man and somehow convinced them to hire me went from interview to Barnes and Noble bought a Mac book crammed for my job that started that Monday. I still have the memory of being introduced to my desk where a beautiful blue g3 and a pc were awaited me. I was never found out and got myself up to speed in time. But I grew to love the Mac over the years and since that day I’ve always had both pc and Mac’s and I love em both

Could you Mr. Actionretro or someone do me a favor, and tell me what hardware (or find me a good site) the x86 version of Rapsody supports, im going to attempt to run it on PCem. Couldnt locate iny usefull information when i searched for it myself and im pretty good at finding things.
This might be interesting, I don't know, this guy's presentation and diction is much too grating and labored to even get two minutes into it. It's not a kid's show, just talk like a normal person.

I have one of those IDE DOMs. They are so generic that I have never seen one not get detect by the bios and like it as a drive. It's just nice not having a spinning disk in my win98 machine anymore.
I have one in my SuperMac 600e clone. Works great.
Man, what a peculiar moment in computing history, and perhaps industrial design in general. It was just a blip in the grand sceme of things, but it's something people will be revisiting for many decades.

(2:16) IIRC from another RUclips video I watched, it was also for older software licencing dongles that interfaced via ADB instead of USB, allowing users to continue using their old expensive software for a while longer before they had to upgrade to a newer version that came with a USB dongle instead, especially in corporate environments with accounting and all of that.

I've been able to get a PowerMac G3 Tower Beige , but Rhapsody wants SCSI Drive. (Says the Facebook seller, he has it installed with SCSI). This is the beige G3 tower, but in your video you are trying it with the G3 Blue / White, So I'm wondering if the Beige will like SCSI or the Hyperdisk IDE Flash you used?

It looks like you're trying Mac OS X Server 1.2 because your MacOS Classic is using 8.6. I think you would have had better luck with the Adaptec SCSI card if you had used Mac OS X Server 1.2v3, which also contains Classic Mac OS 9 instead of 8.6. 1.2v3 was updated to support more hardware that had been released since the initial versions of 1.2.
The message you got about “the scsi disk is unreadable” just means the disk is either unformatted or formatted with an unrecognised filesystem. That's why it says, “Click Initialize to completely erase the disk and format it for Mac OS X Server.” You would've had the same exact problem on modern macOS.
I remembered this morning I had one of these sitting in the cupboard that I'd picked years ago. Years ago, in the days before I knew about things like "hey, that battery is ABSOLUTELY going to leak"...
So... the battery has leaked. Not badly, but enough to have to do a little cleanup. Sigh.
Luckily it's a Rev 2 controller chip I see, so that's going to make getting it up and running a little easier by the sounds of things.

I did some volunteer work at a computer bank back around 2012. Scrapped a couple of machines very similar to this one. Way easier to pull apart than the iMacs. Those were a huge headache. Non-standard screws and a convoluted internal layout.

I find Rhapsody quite intriguing, it really does seem like all the functionality of Mac OS X was present at this early stage and all that was left was to Aqua-fy it. Spins me out seeing OS 8.6 in the Yellow Box, rather than OS 9.
I'm glad my Sawtooth G4 from later in 1999 looked better. It still does, no need to emulate old games- I just play them.
Love it. I didn't realize SCSI made the leap from beige boxes. I had a G3-333 (upgraded to G4-400) with some SCSI peripherals (like an external CD-rom and an external HD) left over from an 8500 that I abandoned when I moved to a Quicksilver 800 Dual Processor and Firewire. All the beige stuff succumbed to house cleaning though I still have the Quicksilver.
My first mac was a PowerMac G4 FW800 with a SCSI card and four SCSI HDDs in RAID 0 lol. I got it for free in 2011.
Is there a way of finding one of those ominous dev copies of Copland to install on an early PPC Mac? That would be an idea for content if it isn't already done.
The whole video would be simply rebooting the thing. Copland was notoriously capable of crashing while idle.

We called this machine; the G3: Smurf; and, the Green G4 was called Yikes.
Don't suppose you have access to the 2.0 chip then you could get your buddy at mac84 to install it
That G3 PowerMac (and the G4s) still look far nicer than the latest Mac Pro, imho.

I got a blue and white from my grandparents' graphic design business. I love that blueberry color! It's amazing how much faster my graphite g4 is, and it only came out a year later!
