It's incredible to see that there's a 1:1 correlation between NL's sanity and the bitrate.
good comment
plosive correlation
Me laughing as NL instantly rips into a chatter at the start of a video knowing full well he'd never do that to me, a RUclips viewer
A respectable adult
less than 1 min into the episode and ryan is already deranged
well he was hit by the “the post about the guy”
Listening to NL putting every format of MTG on BLAST while the Milk Zone's them is bumping in the background is honestly the exact type of content I watch his channel for.
that board games rant was amazing. a good board game makes you feel like you understand it
like chess
I was just shocked he knew what Euchre was, I thought I was the only one under 60
@@seamusosullivan9105 it's still popular in the Midwest! I graduated University three years ago and we had a whole group of people in the rec hall playing just about every day
but hes arguing for brain dead which is different than easy to learn.
It was funny but also deranged. Boardgames are the shit, you just gotta get over the zoomer attention span and play them once to know everything there is to know. 99% of modern videogames surpass any boardgame in complexity by a lot, they're really not that complex at all.
It's funny to exagerate but he got carried away. Majority of "super heavy complex" boardgames nowadays can be explained in less than 20 minutes. You don't need to be a nerd to get that shit, you just have to be engaged in the explanation and not turn your brain off cause something is taking more than a few minutes.
Every single bad boardgame he pretended to explain actually got me pretty hype 😆
I want to make a zombie survival board game now
At first I was skeptical of this game but the mindflood of screen noise and the banter rich environment has got me pogging out of my gourd.
It's only like 2.99 - I've got about 30 hours in it and I've still not finished it. It has a huge amount of hidden depth.
@@Lucifers-Stepdad 80 hours in and still missing one steam achievement lol
The dev seems really cool. Worth buying it just to support him.
None of these words are in the bible.
@@lewdwig Good.
React court NL be like, “my husband’s brother!?!? THAT’S YOUR BROTHER-IN-LAW”
Vampire Survivors NL be like, “My wife’s sister’s family…”
I find that to be a useful distinction. Your wife's brother or your sister's husband would have the same title, but possibly different meanings to you.
Overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.
Thank you Wayne from the Darkest Dungeon games
I could really use some more DD1 content.
Board game night protip to avoid one of the biggest problems described here: If you're bringing the game, actually learn how it works inside and out before showing up. I love complex games (withing reason) but nobody wants to sit through 30-60 minutes of reading and slowly trying to connect the dots instead of the activity we were all supposed to be doing in that time. Read the rules at least once or twice on your own, maybe watch a review video and if you're really committed you can even set up and run a few practice rounds with yourself just to make sure it all clicks. Everyone else at the table will thank you for not wasting their time and it'll also help the people that might be put off by the idea of a "complex" game since you'll be able to rephrase the rules in a way that hides most of the fiddly bits.
absolutely crucial. sounds like NL lived through some shit teaches and that soured whole large segment of board games for him.
I think the best experience I ever had with Magic was with my gaming club in a community college: One guy had an old ass Sliver deck.
The goal was to beat him.
No ban list.
Gotta love slivers :D
I stopped playing Magic before Slivers ever came out. It'd be easier to get into it if I never played it before. Tried to get back in 3 years ago and my head exploded.
This extended MTG rant perfectly mirrors my experience with MTG as well. I tried to make friends outside of the drafts and events i attended, but every time i tried to interact with MTG players outside of a card shop I was severely disappointed.
That whole board game segment hit too close to home 😂
Oh so you mean the entire video? Lmao
In this video NL plays board games made by Hideo Kojima
Hot take: The problem with Commander is not the decks, it's the players.
My brother was a hard core Magic and L5R player. He has guerrilla racks full of card boxes. So can definitely see the barrier to entry.
Now a days we do a weekly game of gloomhaven on the PC. The table top version takes forever to setup, but from 7 to 9 we get in 1 to 2 games and have a good social time.
The little hit of nostalgia from the 'swing my arms from side to side' at the end was delightful.
The MTG bit is spot on.
I like it when the blurry man rants about Magic!
Somehow this man has an intimate knowledge of Magic the Gathering but also thinks two minutes is a long turn.
Holy shit. 13 dead end drive. Me and my sisters used to play the hell out of that game when we were like 12. I totally forgot that game even exists. Also as a magic player of 21 years I am deeply hurt by all the very accurate and very true things you have said this day.
My MtG life was from 97 to around 2005. Tried to get back into it 3 years ago and my head exploded.
@@gmork1090 yeah the power creep is crazy. Wotc did some pretty stupid things from 2019-2021. I still have flashbacks to oko
Worked for nearly 4 years at a board game store and that board game rant was pretty spot on. I barely played any of them but could explain a lot of them pretty well by just watching RUclips videos. NL talking about how he can't stand that there are so many board games and then turning around and gesturing to the PILE of them offscreen made me laugh pretty hard. Sure, my guy, whatever you say.
fr lol i didn't expect him to list out 30 board games. i thought i was into board games (own around 7) but he's on another level, his list of "you must play these to call yourself a board game fan" is bigger than the total number of board games i've probably played. but i always love a good point and he's 100% spot on with a lot of his rant
NL in the first minute: I need context to make any sense of this
Also NL: Batchest
I came for the 13 Dead End Drive references and was not disappointed.
His description of playing board games with his family was starting to sound like an AmITheAsshole post
Shoutout to Dutch Blitz though - thought no-one knew that
Someone needs to get this man som board games by the master, Reiner Knitzia. Simple rules, but tons of juice!
NL's board game rant is on point and is why I find games like D&D so awkward to get into. I love the idea of the game but I wish I didn't need to do homework just to have fun.
Thankfully I have found alternatives that are more streamlined but getting people together to play them is another story entirely.
I've enjoyed the banter as much as the gameplay.
He is getting a lot of mileage out of the being overly specific bit in this episode
game kills you at 30:00 and he made it last 49 minutes
All the magic and board game talk just made me depressed as hell cause I haven't done any of that in a while
Same. Trying to get back into Magic and failing miserably was depressing.
Would love NL to turn up on a LoadingReadyRun MTG stream one night or something lmao. They're even all based in Vancouver!
This would be the most intensely pog crossover
Wait I remember them, they're still around?
I didn't watch this live, but i already know the chat was just full of peepoTalk peepoTalk
Totally get the Magic rant myself. Used to play some Standard, some Modern with friends and it just got absolutely ridiculous some times. A couple of them tried to get me into Commander but I just honestly couldn't be bothered with how much work it was. The whole time-to-play thing was so true to be honest, one time we played a house-rules 6-way FFA game and it took over 4 hours from start to finish.
The board game rant wasn't valid until he listed off more than half of the obscure board games on my shelf
I liked it when he turned this into a board game.
I've actually fallen asleep playing Vampire Survivors, but that's really the only way to die.
Board game tech has really come along. There are some kids board games (Look for HABA stuff) which are genuinely pretty fun for parents too.
Betrayal at House on the Hill is one of my favorite board games, and pretty easy to get into rules-wise. It's only when the haunt happens that the rules ramp up; even then you're not expected to have read through most of the rulebook stuff. As for my favorite haunt scenario, it's the one where the traitor is revealed to be a French Canadian from Mon Bazou, and everyone else needs to flee the Quebec House before he turns them into maple syrup.
These boardgame/magic bits are 💯
The Niv Mizzet slander at 13:42 is so accurate
PepoTalk energy was off the chain
My mom hates Codenames becuase she doesn't get it in her head that she doesn't have to mentally rotate the board for the card.
I mean, she wasn't Captain after she did it for a THIRD TIME, but still
Mottanai such an insane game to pull out the gourd. Incredibly unintuitive with all the card tucking and paragraphs on cards.
Pog, another King Bible/Garlic run! Hes the best to ever do it, tbh
Still sleeping on Runetracer though
Are we not going to talk about him taking the power up card to make revivals super powerful and then banishing tiramisu?
The NL flip flop on Cribbage. Can this man even be trusted?!
I wish he didn't get one guyed vis-a-vis the torronas box. Banishing when is on level 8 makes it arguably the best passive in the game. Also he's very correct about magic :( I love it so much but it is kinda... Complicated?
12.5% is better than 10% but it also doesn't evolve anything. And costing a level to banish it is a real cost too. Imo it's pretty balanced
@@blahthebiste7924 I guess if you have your upgrade for Omni unlocked it seems less good but the buff to EVERYTHING is huge, especially area I find.
@@blahthebiste7924 it evolves 2 weapons tough if u mean for NL then yeah it doesn't for now

I've got to say, I'm really enjoying the spicy/insanity era.
Tieing your boardgame and Mtg rants together: it souds like you might enjoy the Jumpstart format.
The board game rant made it sound like NL is becoming Universal Studios circa 1995 according to Parker and Stone.
I disagree with almost every aspect of NL's *reasoning* on board and card games...
... but he's right about Commander being pure distilled misery, and about many of the fantastic simple-yet-tactical Euros he actually does like, even if we come to those realizations from very different directions.
(Also it sucks that he only got to play draft Magic where the players kept the cards they drafted, rather than the version where you draft, play, then put all the rares in a pool for people to pick from in order of wins during the draft. The latter avoids raredrafting for constructed/resale and is a much more fun experience.)
Welp, my boardgame group thinks twilight imperium is one of the best bg ever made so I guess NL wouldn't really fit in our group
Played Magic from 97 to 2005. Tried to get back in 3 years ago. Haha.. yeahno. Figuring out how to build a time machine to go back and stop Hitler is less complicated.
Sitting and waiting for the combo player to go through their million step turn is so much more tolerable on magic arena because they don't have to go through and tell you all of the boring shit they're doing.
Yeah, and in some cases can even be really cool to see even when you're the one getting fucked.
Is Vampire Survivors coming to Switch? Is there anything like it on Switch?
It took my man 49 minutes to play a 30 game 😭
Seriously though, the offense NL took to the chatter telling him he’s been ranting about board games for 20 minutes SENT ME 💀
To be fair, if you mess up a Caesar salad, you don't deserve to run, much less own a restaurant.
Yo, you gotta get the card game "Spicy", our group loves it.
Yeah but Machi Koro is just a better ligher weight Monopoly. This is an example of board games getting better and simplifying over time. Clue Museum Caper is where it's at full stop
as the designated board game explainer… NLs take is very true
48:23 killed me 😂
woah NL knows dutch blitz?? thought that was just an amish thing but it’s a very pog game
Stay pegged everyone!
All Magic slander is warranted
Complicated board games should all have an "easy mode" where they introduce you to like half of the mechanics and then a regular mode where they introduce you to the other ones. So you can play with a friend group one day on easy mode and some other time on regular. Maybe 3 "difficulties" for some games.
Cosmic encounters kinda does this where there are like 3 huge optional mechanics that greatly increase the complexity
@@teejayburger2136 seems like a good idea
The fucking MTG rant is so good holy
Where are the laundry anecdotes that I subscribed for? :(
I was not expecting that. :)
10:18 Who else but eggman goes to try a restaurant and orders a salad and some fries. At least he's aware that's silly.
That board game rant was kinda funny but hit home for me too. I have sat down to far too many tables with friends and they're busting out the Game of Thrones or Eldritch Horror games and those are just awful games because you spent the first hour sitting there getting the game mechanics explained, then when you play, someone is constantly busting out RUclips or Reddit looking for answers on stuff. It just gets too complicated and takes the fun out of hanging out with friends. I prefer games like Azul or Carcasonne now now that I've hit my 40's
NL is a bejeweled deluxe gamer in denial
I love board games that take two hours to explain, but I think I love learning complex rules interactions almost as much as I love playing them, so I'm always having fun during the reading-the-manual phase. The best board game day of my life was the time eight of us in college played a thirteen hour game of Twilight Imperium.
I haven't watched the video yet, but is this game any good/does NL make it entertaining at all? Would love to hear your thoughts on this.
Cant lie, its a lot of fun. Really simple game
The game feels like it was built for NL. The perfect background for banter
Maybe and possibly
I'm excited, I'll watch it.
Ive been playing it as updates have been coming out since NL first played at the beginning of the year its very fun
My hero
I love that this game is coming to Xbox Gamepass on Nov 8th
still disappointed NL didn't just rip the land in half in front of them -2
In my heart I always knew NL played big dumb green beater ins MtG
im the opposite in marvel snap, i snap back instant
NL loves party games and doesn't like euro-style games
Yes
20:30 I'm so Midwest when he said Euchre I started subconsciously yelling at my partner for calling it on my loner.
when your partner calls it on your godhand: you piece
@@litapd311 😂
I won't stand for dutch blitz slander
I like the part where he ranted about board games for a loooong time
Oh you’re supposed to draw treasure cards face up after defeating a monster together in munchkin because otherwise there’s no way for the cleric to ever take treasure cards from the discard pile OOOOHHHH (cleric is by far the best class fyi)
NL would love Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel 😉
THE POST ABOUT THE GUY IN THE CHATTT
N.L. try the card game Pit. Need 6 to 8 players; but fits your desire of simple play mechanics.
I think I’m gonna make a move deck cause I got vulture
I love how NL knows enough about MTG to sound like he knows what he’s saying but not enough to actually make sense to anyone who plays/played heavily.
Kaladesh coming out in 2001 was +2
My Rumbleverse games are only 3 minutes long.
Stupid, simple, fun board games:

Interesting to see how NL has been gaslit into thinking that garlic is a good item.
It honestly used to be, and still has utility for knockback or early leveling, the real bait is pummarola
@@blahthebiste7924 To me, they're both dead item slots. Its damage is inexcusable even when evolved, there's unevolved items that do more damage than it and I don't think it's small amount of utility makes up for it.
