In this mix of live-action and animation, a young boy of color navigates bias in the classroom and its impact on his future. The film also includes the voices of other children sharing their experiences, at school and at home, as they grow older.

tears in my eyes watching this. it's good to be aware of things, especially since this is said to be unconscious. I hope it will change soon for the better
wow this makes so much sense to explain why kids (bipoc, adhd, asd spectrum, etc.) receive inappropriate and incompetent treatment from "expert" authority figures at school which leads to trouble at school and at home which leads to a "vicious spiral" of negative feelings about themselves and anti-social behavior that comes from the hurt they've experienced and feel inside. Excellent video, very enlightening!
Unconscious bias comes from stereotypes, and stereotypes comes from the media
This makes me appreciate my parents a lot more because I went through this a lot in school were teachers would put me in position were they think what I did was bad. I got harassed to soon get in trouble for it. But my parents fought those things because they understand that they were using that biased thought against me. For me I had to give up a lot of things about myself to fit into that stigma that’s been pushed on me for so long, it practically destroyed me. Now 17 I guess I’m part of the ‘woke’ culture movement where being woke and understanding about the world yourself and other people, stuff that was so hidden and less talk about in my community. Now I’m trying to understand the unconscious bias and how it play so viscously against minorities and how it affects people long term. This physiological affect makes me wonder why isn’t this talk about in minority communities, especially considering how this is a form of racial biased. I’m glad to see videos like these to spread awareness about this form of oppression against minorities...

The exact same stuff happened to me teachers finding the littlest things to give me in trouble for I was in the principal's office a lot more than most kids and I'm white so I don't think it's racist I think your teachers just didn't like you.
I had the same experiences as you being a minority in europe, I hope you are doing better now, I was able to finish university and a master and when getting into the job market found out more bias and much less opportunity than local people...

It's no body's fault actually, Society is mean so are the politicians and we don't expect much from them any good. Good people will always try to help others no matter what. Surely things can be improve through awareness such as this video. But in the end Boy or girl or any body when you come at your conscious, when you aware about your decisions and actions, Please try to do something good. Because there will be always some one who needs help.

That’s actually what Obama ordered school administrators in California to do when he was president. It was found that black males were being suspended at a much higher rate than white males - Obama sought to fix this by just introducing a ‘quota’ and telling teachers to reduce the rate at which they give suspensions to black students. I’m not kidding btw lol

So sad. Ya know what was missing from this story? A father. Kids who have a mother and a father raising them somehow are able to avoid this "unconscious bias". It's really weird how that happens. We need to start having this conversation.
Actually, I disagree, my husband and I are currently walking through this treatment with our son. He just has an advantage of both parents being willing to stand in the mud with him. To put a name to the issue and call it what it is. Honestly it is more common than you can imagine or may want to imagine. There is no avoiding preconceived notions or stereotypes people may hold. The real conversation is talking about this with all honestly how we all have some form of bias and our need to be self aware of this. While also challenging ourselves on why we believe what we believe and how we may be intentionally harming others and in this case children.
i wonder how many of these experiences are from children who dont have fathers in the home?

This is want my deppresion roght know but doesnt show the meaness they just chhose the same girl whot gets straight As and best in sports and art and music i feel useless we had a debate and that girl was in the otuer team and eventhpugh my team won the teachers went like oh but i think her team won and ms promised a role but she replced years of jealousy 6 year actually and i hate myself but no video can explain that but no racism for me cause my country is mixed cultire but srsly someone needs to talk abt that just bc the best student is rlly the top of everyone else

This happens to plenty of white people but they always have to make it a race or gender problem. It’s so boring at this point

@@brianmeen2158 I think you missed an important statistic in the video. It points out that minority students are disciplined harsher at a higher rate for the same infraction 3 times more than their white peers. This creates a disparity in the rate of discipline for like or similar issues. Not making it a race issue by stating what the studies have shown. It's a reality.

Persecution Delusions and Delusional Paranoia systems.
What I viewed was a reason to restructure our educational system. This system destroys children and later on destroys men and women. We need something designed to teach and give them a reason to want to learn. The bias comes from the system.

Every stereotype in the world is exemplified in this video: Kid with either a learning disability or Attention deficit, etc. is not getting what he needs in school and so, we blame the victim. How: simple: kid is not getting the appropriate education he should be, they force him to fit the curriculum when it should be that the curriculum fits him. Then, of course, he becomes a juvenile delinquent and grows up to be a gang member. And why, "Because he's African American or Hispanic" at 3 X the rate of the white kid. So, what's the white kid's excuse? The problem in this scenario is not Hispanic or Black or from Mars. The problem is the kid is in an inappropriate learning environment.
There like trying to be racist is like it’s like there is like light and dark skin people like almost 50/50 and like all the people in the drawings are white
White kids are more likely to be diagnosed with mental health issues than poc. Again this points to unconscious bias

Where's the father?
Notice how they never show what behaviors the kids are getting in trouble for constantly in the video (like shoving someone into a locker)? And the absence of fathers in the homes? Minority communities are plagued by fatherless households the most, and all behavior starts with parenting in the home. A mother will nurture their child, but only a father can reign them in with the proper level of discipline and guidance for life.

@@Navesblue As statistically accurate as minorities being plagued w/absent fathers may be, assuming that particular or majority of the ones around you have absent fathers (and is carrying this chip on their shoulder) is a bias in and of itself. Also assuming every mother is the nurturing type and that every father feels it's their job to carry out the discipline/guidance role is a huge bias, no matter is its "hunter-gather", "evolution" or "human nature". Humans defy and have the ability to defy their "rigid" nature. Having expectations for other people who you know nothing about is a bias. Not that it's wrong for it to cross your mind or make assumptions, but it's when you act on and preach those assumptions and expectations. It limits your worldview.
@@brookethomas5158 Granting you that yes, humans are malleable to a degree and some do defy classic evolutionary gender roles, the vast majority of them still adhere to them by their very ingrained nature. I'm not being "biased". I'm just observing a statistical fact of life.

This video hasn't shown me any good example of discrimination. They literally say the kid is unprepared in school, gets in fights, and misbehaves. If a child is disruptive that takes opportunity away from the other kids to learn and therefore removal and disciplinary action are necessary. It has everything to do with the child's choices, and nothing to do with the child's minority status.
I think you've missed the point of the video... being that he wasnt being any worse than any other kid. He was being unfairly picked on by teachers at a young age which in turn became a self fulfilling prophecy.... no one believed in him so he stopped trying, and in turn he did become a problem student. The focus here should be on empathy and understanding root causes.

This issue is deeper than you think. It's all psychological and subconscious and embedded. Cultural racism is not seen only felt by those subject and if you don't get it you probably don't have the right to comment on it
