    brother....just saw them live three months ago, my thirteenth show since 93, he is still an absolute beast....and he's now 61 years old!!! 59 when they shot this video, the two drummer feeling is the poly Rhythms, that's his forte! TooL is so unique, and he's a big part of that, now that we've lost Neil Peart, He may be the most creative and cerebral drummer on the planet, a true great, thanks for the reaction...it was very precise

    The Drum pads he uses are called Mandela Pads, he designed them himself, you can program with nearly any sound. Danny designed them to make a different tone where you hit it and what pressure. The man is a Genius!

    Hell yeah! I couldn't click fast enough on this reaction! Danny Carey's the man, master of polyrhythms, one of the best drummers of our time.

    Dude is a living legend on the drums. He's also an absolute tank. Like 6'5", somewhere north of 250. Was a world class basketball player in college. I'm pretty sure Larry Bird gave him the uniform he's wearing here.

    The dude you see briefly walking behind Mr Carey is Maynard James Keenan, the singer. During live shows you'll rarely find him in the normal lead singer spots on stage. In the past he's been known to not even be on stage or behind a curtain while singing due to crazy stage anxiety. A very interesting dude for sure
    Edit: "he's a freak dude!"... nah, he's an octopus

      saw a perfect circle live a few years back and i definitely think MJK not being up front and center all the time adds to it. the art fully becomes the experience, not just the artist, even tho APC are a supergroup. and, given how talented the musicians around MJK are, that's a very good thing. i mean just look at danny.

    • @bubbabigmin
      @bubbabigmin 2 года назад +2

      Part of why he is up the back is also for audio quality. His mic doesn't pic up the sound from the stage monitors back there so his vocals are much purer and part of the reason why they sound so good live!

    About time! A master of his craft is only as good as his fuckups. And Danny covers his like a boss…you’ll notice right after the last big heavy break when he relaxes and flashes a smile over to Justin, he misses one beat and for majority of drummers not named Danny Carey, it could have been a much more disastrous slip that could throw you off completely…but DC recovers and stays right in the pocket and most people didn’t even notice. That’s the sign of a true master. I’ve seen the drum cam at least 50 times and it’s still boggles my mind.

    tool army reporting for duty.
    This "polyrhythm" sound, that is a tool mainstay, in their case on average is more properly called a "cyclic meter". It's more extended than your average polyrhythm... multiple meters in parallel, and of different lengths, that phase through each other and come out in the longer run. They got it from King Crimson... perfect examples would be the 'Crimson tunes "frame by frame" and "elephant talk", from the King Crimson album "discipline". I say this because Maynard explained so at a concert that I was at... For the most part, the only place I know of where these techniques are used in nature would be the music of the Balinese Gamelan Orchestra, where it has been highly developed. South Indian music may contain a little bit of it here and there. And the Baka people, back in the motherland, may do a bit of it at times. But only in Bali has it been so highly developed... They'll have dozens of people playing all kinds of interlocking parts of various lengths. phasing through each other, creating all kinds of resultant melodies and other effects... It's totally off the hook. Some of the parts may have long cycle lengths- such as two or three cycles in the length of the whole piece. They've basically taken it all the way.
    I had a guitar teacher back in the Cretaceous era, by the name of Matthew Monfort, who turned me on to this stuff. He would assign each guitar string one of the parts and create all these crazy picking patterns... Definitely affected me for life.
    peace and love be upon you, sir.

      So relevant to what's going on in these shall I say "Troubled Times". It's scary a d at the same time beyond imagination, how they been working on this album since 2006, and after dropping in late 2019, some of the lyrics became immediately relevant to a current world situation...

    Danny Carey is the best for a few reasons to me. First of all he has an incredible inbuilt metronome. The guy doesn't even play all those insane polyrhythms using a click. Secondly he seems to be able to control his 4 limbs completely independent of each other and play different rhythms with each limb. This is clearly evident at 7:50 My mind can't understand that, I have enough trouble doing one thing at a time properly.

Just when your brain is about to explode from poly rhythms you finally get to just bang your head to something. It’s like musical “edging” lol. My takeaway is, TOOL music is so hard to play that even TOOL members fuck up sometimes.
