Ben Williams, NPR Tiny Desk Concert

  • Bassist Ben Williams is a rising jazz star. He won the 2009 Thelonious Monk Competition and received a recording contract for his debut album, State of Art, which was released this summer. Williams brought his band Sound Effect to perform two songs from that album at the NPR Music offices.

    So far this is the best work to come out of this channel. Ben and his band are a real gem. Don t miss this. I think I've seen it at least 10 times.

      You can tell it's early Tiny Desk when they just have their computer up in the foreground with a bunch of stuff open.

    Great sound... reminds me of the yellowjackets... Check out a band that went by the name "Steps" and also "Steps Ahead" circa1980/90's... New York City Records

    Haha! Brotha on the skins makes think of Omar Hakim from I think Sting's Bring on the Night or something. Maybe that was his intent, to pay homage to Omar. He definitely pulled it off.

    hey man i completely understand your view, as a person and a musician who has only gotten into jazz in the past 3 years I wanted to let you know that just like any other genre you have to listen to the "right" stuff that appeal to you first and then you get swept in so to say.
    So what have you listened to as far as jazz goes? I would like to help you find some jazz artists you like if you would allow me too.
