One thing that really interests me about AC1 was that there were incentives to completing all 6 of the Investigation tasks prior to accessing the Assassination Memory itself. Each tasks gives you crucial information regarding guard placements, blending spots, archer locations, and safest routes. Taking all these into account enables you to become more efficient in your assassination and truly feeds into the fantasy of not being just a killer but rather a tactical and calculating Assassin.

33:04 when he says “i am but a Rafiq” it could mean that he is expressing his friendship to Altair because in Arabic “Rafiq” literally means friend.

    • @ADTillion

Can’t believe no one responded to this. In AC1, Rafiq is just the title given to a bureau leader. Only Malik is a named Rafiq; Altair calls the other two as just Rafiq. Just that the older one doesn’t say lines like this that can take away the context. The choice was deliberate, that the other 2 have no personal connection to Altair and only do their jobs, and likewise Altair has no need to address them casually either.

Altaïr growing up in and being raised with the Creed goes a long way to explaining how he got arrogant, he didn’t have a strong enough emotional connection with anyone to ground him, and by the time he restores the Brotherhood as shown in Revelations he’s got that connection in Maria. It’s not until Jacob and Evie in Syndicate we’ll see protagonists who grew up into the role of Assassin, everyone else had other things going on in their lives before first donning the robe and hidden blade.

You can also control Altair during cutscenes to do your own blocking. Al Mualim already has his own. The wide shots compliment the standoffish nature of their tense debates. It's definitely a limitation, but the tools exist to let your directoral spirit take over. It's way better than what they do now, which is pretend the limitations don't exist and zoom right in on the butt-ugly lipsyncing
Some like to say Majd Addin is speaking to us, the player. You can probably tell by the brutality of my tactics that this is one of those games where you can really let your intrusive thoughts win, which can come at odds with the introspective narrative if you don't have an opportunity to take a step back and look at your own player behavior. I don't know, not the deepest interpretation I guess
Lucy is probably encouraging you to look through the emails. She delivers the security pen for your door onto your dresser during one of the first few days, and Vidic's is hanging off his coat pocket. I'll let you figure out how to get your hands on it. During the nights you can leave your room and go snooping, and once you finish the game, the door to the conference room is unlocked. There's all kinds of lore there that will make you do double takes and question everything you thought you knew about this franchise
Alright, it never came up naturally, but I promised you a section on intel and mission planning, so here you go: Every investigation you complete quietly adds one piece of intel to your memory log. These include expected target behaviors and detailed maps showing the positions of enemies, friendly groups like monks, target escape routes, and potential infil and exfil routes. When the rafiq tells you to prepare for your mission, this is what he's referring to. By cross-referencing everything you've learned you can create a complete plan of how you're going to get to the target, who you need to remove ahead of time, and how you're going to get out. The maps aren't always oriented the same direction, so you may consider taking external notes to combine them. Understanding the top down layout of the level is one thing, but synthesizing that with what it actually looks like may require some additional reconnaissance. You can climb a nearby viewpoint, you can visit the area before the mission begins, and you can use Eagle Vision to reveal certain things in three dimensions. The planning phase makes the biggest difference between your assassination missions being a smooth infiltration and a city-wide brawl. It's not because you're too impatient or you "suck at stealth," it's because you didn't have enough information and fell into an intentionally placed trap
Okay, now I'm angry. Ignorance can be corrected, but what you said was *stupid.* I can't believe you'd point out she still has her finger beforehand, then not look at her model again afterwards! Lucy is *curling her finger against her chest* to SIGNIFY that she is an Assassin. YOU CAN EVEN SEE HER DO IT IN THE ANIMATION. The story wasn't that complicated when this came out, what ended up becoming Brotherhood was still supposed to be a time travel game. Bruh... pay attention to the game
Fun fact: During Unity's broken launch, Ubisoft actually did use the "Animus glitch" defense on Twitter when referring to IRL game-breaking bugs. No wonder the writers had them ally with Abstergo in Black Flag
Look, I know you don't like to talk about gameplay much, but let me know if you want to come learn more about stealth games, especially Assassin's Creed games so something like this doesn't happen again. In this case you actually missed elements of the structure that drive the game's core themes and what it means to be an Assassin. These aren't just extra details, but the most important things that are great about AC1. Every game in the series is like this, though. There's so much that goes unexplained, it becomes a completely different experience if you have someone to teach you. We have our resources better organized on Discord than we do on RUclips because they're so numerous. If you're interested, just let me know where I can send you a link

Heresy is very similar to AC1 in tone and style, following Joan of Arcs life and how both Templars and Assassins manipulate religion to service their own goals. Underground is a prequel to Syndicate and plays on an idea you mentioned in this video that "isn't killing someone removing that choice?" It questions if the Assassins actions match their ideology as they introduce children to the cause and make them dress and act in the same way

I remember first playing this game back in 07, I was 17 or 18 at the time. This was perhaps the first video game I ever played that made me feel any weight behind taking a life, especially after I listened to the confessions of my targets and came to understand that they genuinely believed that their actions, however vile, served a greater good to try to bring peace to Holy Land if not the world. Like Altair I found myself coming to understand them and sympathize with them while at the same time resolving that they must stopped as their version of "peace" would condemn people to a living death. I was very bummed that aside from ACIII and Rogue, the following games really stepped away from these kind of stories, I always felt that the writing of Assassin's Creed was at its best when the conflict was present as morally gray like ACI, ACIII, and Rogue did. ACI really was the first game that ever made me ask "Are we doing the right thing?", "Were these people truly wrong?", and "Who is the real bad guy here if there even is one?"
I also loved Altair's growth even if he never completely lost his ego. He still was far more compassionate and wise, this was reflected in his conversations with his later targets, sparing Maria, and by asking Malik not to kill their Assassin brothers if it could be avoided.

Eagle Vision is a tool for finding out more information about people or objects you can already see. Are they your target? Can you hide there? Are they a new enemy type you haven't seen before? Can it be destroyed? Do they have information for you? Are they to be left unharmed? It's an extra step in the process of information gathering that allows you to immersively identify objectives without needing to follow markers. Detective Vision is for finding people you can't currently see. It's the end-all tool for trivializing information gathering and delivering everything there is to know about the level on a silver platter. In AC1 the information given by Eagle Vision must be combined with written intel and visual reconnaissance to fully understand the level - more on this later. Detective Vision would gradually replace Eagle Vision in the series because of how easy it made level design, allowing the player a shallow shortcut to instantly understand the level. Other Ubisoft games copied this simple approach, then other stealth games copied those until now Detective Vision is inescapable and sometimes mandatory
"Safety and peace" is most likely a mangled translation of "As-salamu alaykum." While it's difficult to greet someone in Arabic without mentioning Allah in some way, the fact they say such a similar inverse response shows these Assassins aren't too far off from their roots in Shia. This is the first of many references to the book that inspired AC1's hashashin lore, Alamut. The rest are increasingly spoilery if explained outright. If you *really* want to dig deep into the religious themes of this game, I highly recommend it, but the average player who likes parkouring around and stabbing people may find it a little dense. It's finally important to the lore again given the setting of Mirage, though
Win: Desmond desynchronizes when Altair believes he died
When landing a successful combo, each block becomes more fatigued and imprecise as you gradually whittle down their defenses to provide visual feedback that you're doing it right without relying on HUD elements or unrealistic visual effects. If you button mash this doesn't happen and it's very difficult to land even a single hit
Viewpoints offer another advantage besides just a pretty cutscene and unlocking stuff on the map. They give you a bird's eye view of the environment to scan with your actual eyes and figure out where you need to go. They're not meant to be a mandatory part of a checklist because there are many other immersive navigation tools to help you organically find your objectives besides just viewpoints and markers. The rafiq isn't telling you where the viewpoints are, he's telling you where the *investigations* are, what nearby landmarks to look for, and cardinal directions from the bureau. One herald will say something different than all the others. People acting suspicious, informants in their bright white robes, and of course Eagle Vision to confirm you're on the right track; there are numerous context clues for what you need to do next if you use your eyes and ears to listen to what the city is trying to tell you. You'll get a lot less burnt out playing the game this way too. Every discovery becomes an an exciting step that takes you just a little bit closer to your target. Patrice Désilets has even gone on record to state the game was originally intended to have no HUD at all, which is why you can still disable it and navigate like a true Assassin. This is the only game in the series where this is 100% possible
That's strange, your footage kind of tells a different story than your narrative. I think the reason every surface is "climbable" is to give you a place to put your hands between jumps. That's what this is after all - a 3D performer. Just because you can scale a sheer vertical wall doesn't mean you should, because doing that in AC1 is *excruciatingly* slow. This is the game telling you to jump away from the wall and find something else to grab, be it a windowsill, scaffold, or the top of the building you're trying to reach. Even if your trajectory is off, you can still catch something in a different direction and course correct. You'll almost certainly end up higher than you were before, and you'll definitely cover more ground, which is exactly what I see you doing in the footage. It takes you a few seconds to analyze the surrounding terrain and make a plan, but I can tell you understand the concept. The real innovation here wasn't the freedom to climb anything, it's the ability to jump off of anything in any direction and grab anything else nearby, which is why the rooftops are so intricate with combinations of differently shaped buildings and furniture to switch between. Nobody seems to have understood this, because later games made free climbing literally twice as fast and made the path from one platform to the next brutally obvious, with room for only small optimizations using directional platforming
AC1 does have killchains, but they're a lot more involved. Whenever you get a paired takedown like a successful combo kill or stabbing someone who's been knocked over with the hidden blade, one guard chosen at random will briefly cower in fear, leaving him vulnerable to assassination. You can change direction and close the distance with quickstep, but that has some limitations. If there's another enemy between you and your target, you'll collide with him and miss the opportunity. If you unlock from combat entirely you can run around freely, which can also help close the distance to floored targets. Enabling the "hold to lock" setting makes this easier to control and prevents accidental lock ons. It also allows you to let go of high profile at the last second and get faster kills, which opens the true potential of the hidden blade that makes it the predecessor to kill chains: When you assassinate a cowering enemy, *another one* will also cower, and if you're quick, you can assassinate him too. Then another one will cower from that, and so on and so forth until they're all dead. If this still sounds confusing I have a shock and awe playlist full of examples. I got too good at it and had to just start doing it one at a time so I still had opportunities to interact with the other parts of the combat system, but this is an important part of how Assassins fight: They don't take risks trying to sword fight multiple guys at once. They use fear, agility, and dirty tricks to level the playing field and eliminate their opponents in rapid succession before they can react. In AC2 you can do it by targeting high-ranking enemies, in Brotherhood-Rogue you can do it with kill chains, in Unity you can do it by using tools to break out of combat stance, and in Syndicate you can stagger and bust everyone down to low health for massive multi-takedowns. In most cases you can initiate this from stealth too, so there is precedent for Mirage's focus ability throughout the whole series
The windows also obscure your location. I remember trying to clip the camera into them and figure out where I might be, but you really can't tell if the washed out architecture is America, Asia, or Europe
Turns out the flags were a meta-commentary on the pointlessness of the completionist mindset encouraged by 90s collect-a-thon 3D platformers. Obviously their mechanics inspired this game greatly, but Patrice wanted to break away from their menial structure to create a world where everything you do is either in service of getting closer to your target, to doing your job, or it's a waste of time. He later apologized for this cynical approach, because some people definitely proved him right and were drawn to get every last thing, only to be rewarded with... nothing. It just hammers home even further the fact that AC1 wasn't some proto-open world ARPG, in fact it's staunchly opposed to their modern values
Saved civilians become monks to help you blend or vigilantes to grab attacking guards and fleeing targets. If you know your target's escape route, you can cross-reference it with positions of known vigilantes on the map, and if they're not spawned in yet, you may want to go do that before beginning your mission. Cleaning them up also helps to clear out the noise pollution and make context clues leading you to your next objective more audible. Everything you do is in service of killing your target
There are four different kinds of counter kills in this game. The ones that kill immediately and the ones that knock them over are chosen at random and based on their remaining health, but if you're patient and manage to wait until the last second before countering a heavy attack you'll have an opportunity to choose between two more after Altair elbows them in the face. If you press attack it will prevent them from falling over and switch to a brutal kill, saving you the time it would take to switch to the hidden blade and stab them on the ground. This will also make someone cower. If you press legs however, you'll break their legs and knock them out, resulting in a piercing scream. This will make one guard cower when you first knock them out, then *another* if you choose to ground stab them anyway. If you don't see the first cower this can be nice to buy yourself an extra chance, or you can return to him later and finish him off in case you lose your combo. I like to use it to set up flashy high profile triple kills where I knock out my attacker, rush down one guy and assassinate him with the cinematic camera angle that high profile shock and awe provides, then come back to finish him off, then do *another* high profile kill after that without ever technically getting two in a row. The hidden blade counters always kill immediately

Now that I've watched playthroughs of the game, I've come to appreciate the process of gathering intelligence about your target before finally going after them. It's later said of Altair that he planned his assassinations to perfection, and this gameplay loop really immersed me in that mindset.

This was one of my first game I got and beat when i first got my 360 and was like 13 at the time and ac 2 had come out without me knowing. This was my first "Stealth" game and I was hooked from day one and played the rest of the games religiously. That was until origins when I snuck through my first enemy camp and went to assainate the leader and only a 4th of the health bar was taken away. I sort of bounced off the series for a time after. But thanks for theses videos reminding me of the games that shaped a good bit of how I thought while going to school.

damn if I don't remember learning that when in combat the guard in the group most likely to attack will make a small motion with his sword arm allowing you to predict and counter his swing and that later on sometimes one or more of the enemies in groups will feint that same motion to throw you off. I remember also how noticeable the Cross motif is in the present day sections being part of almost every facet of Abstergo's architecture.
I was 17 when AC1 released and I've played each main title since as they came out, which makes me feel exceptionally old now that we've crossed into the 16th year of the franchise. AC1 hasn't aged as well as 2, but it lays the groundwork for an incredible series and I'm nostalgic enough that I'm excited to return to that classic gameplay in the more modern ANVIL engine they used to build Mirage.

this game def could use a remake with more cinematography in the cutscenes like you mentioned and maybe added story details and side missions, idk how many newer AC fans have even played AC1 since it's one of those games stuck on 7th gen consoles (excluding backwards compatibility and PC) so legit it might be a good idea to reintroduce it the newer generation

Thanks for the flashback to AC1. While not perfect games, I appreciate the ways that AC1 and AC3 pushed the envelope. Having played from AC1 through the Kenway Saga, I also thought AC1 and AC3 did the best job of presenting the gray areas and the nuance between the Assassins and Templars.

I played AC1 before AC2 came out (back in 2007/2008), and I was someone who felt that it needed more time in development even then, so it's not all comparison to the newer games.
I was primarily referring though to how some of the game's systems just didn't really work right. The climbing system was especially bad and was what I could most point to at the time. My thoughts on it were "This is a great alpha build for the game. I wish I could be playing a release build, but I guess they didn't get that far."
My sentiments for the systems of AC 2 (especially the climbing) were that the game was a good beta build, so much closer to fully working systems, but my problems with the series' systems ended there. I did stop playing after AC 4 though... After 6 games, it was just... enough. I'd had my fill, enjoyed it all, and was done repeating essentially the same core gameplay loop.
Edit for age at the time: I would've been 24 at AC1's release date. My playing of it was likely mostly at 25...

Not sure if this one was deliberate or just a mishape but, in the last conversation with Al-Mualim, the milky eye of the old man is shut... sure the guy still tries to catch a ball but when Altair reminds him of the creed the frame is focused on the master's eye, or rather his eye, symbolising that the Old man of the Mountain saw wisdom once again

I played both AC1 and AC2 on release so was 15 and 17 years old when I played them.
AC1 absolutely blew me away and it had to somehow do that alongside the other releases of that year?! I think it's the game in the franchise I have replayed the most. That's not really a thing I do with games, the only others that come to mind are the Halo and Gears of War franchise. That's no mean feat. Granted, I replayed AC1 because I had trouble with my Xbox accounts back in the day and I wanted all the achievements but there was a couple of times I just replayed it for the sake of it. I remember going round my mates with it because they wanted to watch me play it. I stayed over there for the weekend and completed it in front of them. This game just has a monumental place in my heart and I will be the first to say it has not aged well at all. A lot of people say that AC2 is there favourite in the franchise and I respect that but for me it's possibly Brotherhood. Although AC2 sort of perfected AC1, Brotherhood perfected AC2 in my eyes.
I likely wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for this game creating this franchise as I am always looking forward to what next comes. Only Halo comes close to that. I have an AC tattoo for a reason because of its importance of what it made me.

I am so glad I started playing the whole series only in 2018. And, ofc, I played them in order. I still haven't finished them all (I am currently at the last one - AC Vallhalla). I started playing AC because I heard it had a great lore and the concept of ancient civilizations and history always intrigued me. So, the series was a perfect fit. I am a sucker for good gaming stories and great characters. So, for me that aspect was/is the most important. That is why I could enjoy AC1 too, even tho the missions were repetitive. It had one the best dialogues in AC series.
So, my journey with AC is amazing. Especially the Desmond Saga. My favorite is still AC 2 because how I got to know my favorite gaming character of all time: Ezio Auditore da Firenze.

I first played AC1 and loved it. I then tried to play AC1 afterward, but I have to admit, my young self couldn’t bear the graphics, the weird animus tutorial scene, and the initial gameplay until the first visit to Acre. The game is considered old, having been released for some time already. It took me many years until I finally replayed it. It was probably the best technology and the team to develop ac1. It is still a good game!

I started with AC1, while it was a bit slow (the horse travel and flags... ugh) I did enjoy the mechanics. It was a good starting point. With AC2 I remember freaking out when the trailer was shown at E3 saying "I'm in the Renaissance with a gun!? Awesome!".
My and my family's favorite is probably Black Flag. It was the only one that my late father played. Also since my brother, my dad, and myself played at the same time we had the social mechanics of finding special things (like white whales) in the campaign let us indirectly help one another.

I was 27 when I popped AC in for the first time, not long after its release. I remember AC and Mass Effect being the 1-2 punch that got me back into gaming after 2-3 years of not touching them at all. BTW I wanna say even though I know it might come off super consdescending I really don't think of it that way: when you first mentioned being born in 2000 I was blown away. I thought you were at *most* 10 years younger than me, because of the amount of wisdom you have. Not intelligence, although you've got that too, more the ability to have the long view, have perspective. Things I totally lacked when I first played AC and ME. And also probbaly lacked until a good five years later when I was in my *thirties*.
Man I hope you carry that wisdom all your days and know true contentment in all your endeavors because that makes the good life and like Ezio, I spent a lot of years getting to that perspective. I won't call the years 'wasted' because I don't regret them, but - if someone came up to me now and gave me the opportuntity to be 23 and have that wisdom, I'd struggle to turn it down.
