i saw an interview of Ron where he said he played bass guitar, but he preferred an upright because an upright can be played with more force . As he put it "I want the drummer to have tread marks over his back when I play a B flat 7." Or something to that effect. And you can really hear the force of his bass playing in this video.

Thank you Mr Carter for being my guiding light in Walking Jazz bass. I first learnt to play jazz bass via your 1998 book " Ron Carter 'Building Jazz Bass Lines Book 1&2'" & although I play Electric bass, I have gain so much knowledge & understand from them. Also your works on Jamey Abersold playlong tracks & even your works in"Band In The Box", and of course all the various recordings of your albums & with the Legends in Jazz. Blessings & gratitude 🙏❤

I would recommend finding a good bass teacher. I have a video on how to find the right teacher for you here: ruclips.net/video/vH2la-pPKVU/видео.html
Then I would give the advice I give to any bassist: practice diligently, and listen carefully. I recommend you practice 1-2 hours every day, if you are looking to pursue this beyond a casual hobby. Practice with a purpose. Know what you are working on and focus on that. Get a solid grasp on your chords so you can understand how your notes will fit in with the notes of others. Listen to the music you want to play and study it with this in mind.

Can’t wait to try and jam along with you and learn some of these lines and then try to decipher the depth when compared to the written changes 😊 The magical and marvelous thing about your walk lines and bass playing is how it’s a composition first. You say your own story regardless of the changes and framework. That’s your depth! Could you some day do a jam on some of the material form Nefertiti? I’d love to watch you play those lines and just go on a bass journey. Pinocchio, Fall, Nefertiti…thanks again Maestro. Peace and much love, happiness and health to you. The changes on the fake book are so odd, when I try to play along I don’t get lost as much if I play around with the melody. But hard to visual the changes when playing of the melody. Unless my eyes are glued to the chart. I’m sure that will get easier. I’m gonna work on listening to your lines next and see how they relate to melody and changes. Listened to it for years but always thought it was to hard to learn. My bad, already created a mental barrier for myself for all those years. Things like meeting some of the most incredible msuicans and knowing that they can look like me, they can spread thier creative wings and not only play some of the most killin jazz flute with the swing, advanced improv vocab and of course swag, but also could groove in just about any genre/style, was into sound design, audio enginneering, and production behind one of the most dope rappers in the country (Watsky, for those interested) not to mention beat everyone who commented on this video in a Halloween costume contest. Daniel, this is Adam Sticklebault, I played acoustic bass and lvied on the 6th floor at the same time you and Max were roomies in 150. I gotta say this but on top of all that to be so free of care of what anybody thought of you and the fact that you have some Mexicano blood was a thing of beauty to see. I gotta give you flowers because I'm at a point where I gottaa speak my mind and my truth no matter what form now one, and tell you that it was inspiring to get to hang and hear what you did and produced while we were in school together in Boston are some of my most fondest memories that I will be grateful for everytime I remember them. Hey Ron, I was wondering if you could give me a little bit of advice. When I practice and I’m walking on a tune, how often should I not put the roots on the first beat? In other words, when is it better to play simpler and more rooted, and when is it better to be more harmonically colorful? I’m 17 and when I play with my mom (who is a singer), she tells me it’s much clearer to always put the roots on one. Is it better to be simpler with vocalists and to be more colorful with instrumentalists?
