He's an engineer, he spends his time researching the science of sound and making great speakers, not wasting it on becoming a RUclips diva.
@@sivitriscarzam7306 But the autofocus vibration. It isn't minor. Also, you come across like I have personally attacked this guy. Which is odd. RUclips diva might be better than a youtube karen. My manager will contact you promptly.
That was purposely done that's called an optical illusion in other words he's talkin about sound waves so to give you a visual he had his videographer used the pan from side-to-side pretty ingenious actually..
All I know is that I went to the NAMM Show a few years back and picked up a 5-string bass going through one of his cabs and it was the GREATEST bass experience I have ever had. It was nowhere near "loud" but the tone on that B string was so fundamental and strong. My spine rattled with absolute joy. I can only imagine how great it would have been if the decibel police weren't standing right there with their meters. I have wanted one of his cabs for a LONT time.
Informative video. But I didn't hear anything new that's not been known for the past 50 years or so. The key comment would be. "Watts are not really important. It's the spl that is the key factor " so I would concour with that. So if that's the case then why refuse to publish the spl figs of each combo?
This is a fascinating video that shows the know-how that Phil Jones uses to design, engineer, and build great bass speaker cabinets!!! That's a great explanation of Hofmann's Iron Law near the end! "You can't hear watts but you can hear decibels". Love it!
A lot of good info here but it is so hard to concentrate on it with the constant refocusing. Apparently Phil's arm movements are driving the AF crazy. Someone should have caught this and focused it and then take it off of AF. This also created a booming in the microphone. Even with those annoyances still enjoyed Phil's insight.
I too am into single source, purpose built drivers. Anyone who has a pair of Raindow car audio 6.5’s know exactly what a smaller driver is capable of. Being a bass player myself with experience running live sound I still would never have thought to use such an efficient system for live bass reproduction. This is genius
Excellent video. A wealth of practical information directly from the man himself. Phil Jones is a legend in the field of audio system design. This was a real treat to hear him speak so candidly about his own history and about the evolution of speaker design in such a technical way. If you're not an engineering-minded person, you may get distracted. Otherwise, you will enjoy the information this brilliant man has to offer. Either way, the important thing is that his bass rigs are amazing.
Thank you ! So MANY people should see this video to start understanding bass amplification. I am very frustrated when trying to help others on forums and groups, where the big topic is all about speaker diameter and 4 vs. 8ohms.
Great interview, I didn't realise he was responsible for so many groundbreaking designs. Came here as I am just about to order a PJB C4 for home use :)
This man makes amazing bass amps I almost died the first time I played a pjb amp with 4 5" speakers it sounded huge I couldn't believe the headroom and size of this tiny thing with a the 4 5"extension can I can't think of any situation that it wouldn't work he's a brilliant guy
Great insight there thx Phil, I have always built speakers and been fascinated by sound, I still have your original prototype AE1's I bought from your brother in Dinas Powys as I used to pop over to play bass for him, if you ever want them back (sentimental) just give me a shout👍, Keep up the good work you are making us in Wales very proud. All the best Steve Mac Cardiff🏴
The one limitation not addressed is excursion. A bass cabinet the size of a pen with a million watts won't work because a cone that size would need practically infinite excursion. Even if the driver could have that much excursion, at 5 - 7 mph, it couldn't move fast enough to get the waveform out. So yeah, as you said there is a limitation to the efficiency/power input ratio.
I’m a very proud owner of some of his products.. as a bassist and always trying something new for a new sound, his products have put a hold for me to search further.. Mr Jones please take in consideration of designing a preamp with matching pickups...
Great point to end on: the power draw of the amplifier is very different than the decibel level of speakers. Drums and trumpets only require 10 or 20 watts of physical energy, but it all gets converted into sound.
This was all very interesting and EXTREMELY informative!! I must admit, this video exposed more than one of my previously held misconceptions.. To which I’m grateful! I’m fascinated with the direction bass design & amplification is headed! I only the same advances would gain acceptance among guitarists.. Coming from a guitarist’s perspective where it’s about all about valve amplification. Heavy and very expensive transformer/ output tube power amp design invented in the 1920’s, And 12” AlNiCo magnet speakers.
Very, very interesting video. Although I always use 12” drivers, I am fascinated about the PJB concept. Haven’t heard one yet but I am curious. And I totally didn’t mind the auto focus btw 😊
For someone who spent his live optimising with sound, it is kind of ironic to talk about that and the audio of the video. At least the noise of the pumping camera auto focus ist gone in the last third of the video. Thanks for the very compact, very well explained and enormous amount of information. I'm wondering why the most relevant slide (at 33:01), that explains why to use smal drivers, is shown for a so sjort time, that you can't read it ;-)
New understandings for me: first, power compression due to increased heat-caused coil resistance. You make a good case for the use of multiple small voice coils in this regard. Second, the temp sensitivity of Neodymium-- suddenly the behavior of neo in the clutch makes sense. Very accessible engineering info, the casual ramblings of a very organized mind. And now I must ask-- while I agree that Watts are less important than max SPL, I wonder why PJB publishes the power handling but not max SPL of their cabinets. Or have I missed the spec somewhere?
Yes I am concerned about the lack of spl in the specs . I can't see that 4 miserable 5 inch Chinese speakers are going to keep up with a band in a gig situation. Home and studio stuff, it'll be fine.
I will never buy from any brand that try to hide technical information of their products. Learn from the genius Genelec manufacture, they have TRUE R&D, real researches with shit loads of published scientific papers. It reflects clearly in their product's specs sheet and performance. The guitar, bass related companies always try to hide a lot of technical information. They look like exactly those audiophile speakers company who can not even provide a freaking frequency response graph!
Fascinating stuff, Phil. I have a number of your cabs and am a confirmed fan. My favourite is the 4B. It combines the speed and clarity of your small drivers with a bit of old school "bloom" (for want of a better term) to sweeten the sound. I have 3, so can stack them up if needed for larger occasions. The C4 is the most surprising in terms of sound produced for its small size. I have a couple of those, too and they're perfect when space is tight. Adding a decent tweeterless (can't stand them for bass) 1x12 warms the sound up a little and gives a powerful rig that is still very compact. Running a number of smaller cabs means carrying them and fitting them in the car is much simpler and I can take as many/few out as the job requires. All the best.
If you are an owner or looking to own some PJB equipment... If you have any questions, give this hands on, customer focused company a call. Its rare to find companies today that welcome a relationship with their customers... I own 2 Cab47's and love them... Bought v them at different times... Spoke to Steve and Mike from PJB, and they were both a great help, and generous with their time... I came away knowing much more, than before the calls! And, because of the advice I received, I bought the 2nd Cab 47, instead of another cab that would not have matched up as well, and i probably would have blown up the new cab!! Call them, you'll be glad you did!
You cant hear watts but you can hear dbs. Why dont you do a video showing your cabs in real venues - small bar, medium sized stage, outdoors etc. Take us through your entire range and show the amps and cabs in action? I'm considering a pjb cab but the only thing holding me back is that I've never heard one live.
I’ve have one, the C8, and can vouch for its great sound. The weird part is you have such clarity among sound, low through high end, but the physical vibration you get with larger speakers like a 15inch is not there nearly as much. A rock band I had played with a few months back did an outdoor gig in a pavilion and we brought our own PA system. Using a 500w bass head with the C8 (it was only hitting at most 300w) they didn’t patch me through the PA because it was carrying so well, they just put some of my signal through the subs. Jaymie Lewis (Deadbeat Studios, sorry if I butchered his name) has a review on them and you can hear a good amount of detail. I based my decision of if that review and some others and was not disappointed.
@@AndrewTannusMusic thanks for sharing. It's quite clear to me now that the lack of 'vibration' could be due to the load-sharing amongst several small speakers as opposed to a single 15. You hear the notes played but the floorboards don't rattle. I suppose this is the clarity that I've heard others speak of. Good for recording as well as technique focused playing where the thump can get in the way.
Well, this video was an extremely interesting watch. I wonder which PJB cabinet would be the right match for band gigs in pubs with a 100 watt tube bass amp (Ampeg V-4B). I currenty use an 8x10 or a 2x12, depending on the size of the room.
I have spoken to several professional bass players that tour with major acts . They generally are using 2 - 4 X 10" Cabinets . When I mention some of the newer , smaller speaker designs , have you used or heard them ? They respond by saying they like the stack they are using . Then comes the punch line . They are not sure if the smaller systems will " move some air " . The bottom line , I think , would be to get these units in the hands of working musicians and let them play them in numerous venues out on tour . Where the rubber meets the road .
Golden info from the man with Golden Ears - the Suitcase Combo+4B cabinet is the best bass rig I've ever used, from dub reggae to boutique hi-fi. Seeing this I can see why. I guess I'll save up for a C9, though - if it's Phil's favourite I have high expectations!
I recall a line of pro audio (bass guitar) speakers that featured a one piece former and cone made of aluminum. The cone, therefore, became a convenient and efficient heat sink for the coil. What became of this design and why it didn't become common place application, is beyond me. Does anyone have any thoughts as to why that is.
Video fine to me I am happy about my Genzler 410 and 800 amp Got 2 CAB-47 - So impressed Clear full sound, enough deep support Try it - You might love it
Totally agree, total lack of coverage on this innovative gear, Im a cinematographer and bass player in STL and I’m trying to reach out to them to help show off there products
Brilliant man, amazing achievements in sound reproduction, which from me at least garners much respect for his amazing career. Now if you could just fix that spasming autofocus this would be much easier to get through.
Expense of manufacturing the box is not a few percent, but a few times more. Expense of lugging the box around. Work for the customer to carry the box around. All 3 are fails when you can now build, like he said, a 1,000 watt speaker for $1,000 and a 800W amp that you can pick up with one hand and stuff into a coat pocket. To build a 18 cubic foot folded horn cabinet now will cost the manufacturer most of $2,000. Takes two men to load it onto a truck. Lot of people have stories of permanent back injuries from hauling bass amps and so hate anything heavy. Need I say more?
Hi. If someone could help here... I have PJB M-300 head + 12b Cabinet. Cant find anywhere how much oHm is cabinet ??? Its 12x5". For the head I found it 300w/8oHm or 450w/4oHm. Just wondering can head works on 2 oHms ?! :)
good video. volume is quite low. if you turn it up someone heavy-handed typing on the surface that the mic is on. very annoying and distracting. some audio post-processing please. high pass filter, noise filter, and normalization please. otherwise, like I said. good video.
Every single loudspeaker componet is the world pretty much is made in China and you probably dont even know it. May i ask why you dont like anything from China?
PJ21UK : Well Mr. Jones I feel that we here in the United States need to go back to making products ourselves. In the late 1980’s,I was building guitars in some of the most well known factories here on the east coast. The wood, pickups and strings were all quality products. I didn’t have an issue with our best mahoganies being from Honduras. When I got into building/repairing tube amplifiers. Getting to work and learn from the best the Tri State area had to offer, there was a sense of pride! Today I’ll easily use tubes made in other countries. Depending on the feel & sound myself or customer is going for. So I should recant my statement and say I wish more products were made here? I do however think most tube amps I’ve worked on from Asia were junk. Cheap potentiometers, jacks, switches etc.. As for speakers, Faital Pro series from Italy, some of the Eminence line made here and Jensen from Italy, I’ve been dealing for years. When I first started doing amps I had a Guass 2X12, EV 2X12 and JBL E120 2X12 cab for guys to hear their amps. If the guy hated their amp, id tell’em that was more of their actual sound. Most guys like an inefficient speaker because it distorts a certain way. You know better than anyone, we had little options back then. Now we have option anxiety! Personally I love your amps! I think the amp I tried was on par with an older Walter Woods head I had. It wowed me like the first time I had those Bose 901’s and a set of Altec VOT on the floor. Since I’m not gigging like I did way back, I’m using my old GK400RB with an old 2X12 Bassman cab I loaded with Faital 300PR’s. Smaller gigs 1X12 Bag End with a Faital. Honestly the Phil Jones rig I tried had as much if not more bottom with the 8’s. I liked the 8’s because they actually gave me more of a mid sound I liked? I like a little smooth grit to my sound. What I don’t like about my old GK is I think the power section could be warmer? Loud is one thing and feel is another. I felt your rig even at a low volume. The way an old Trace Eliot AH head would feel? You’re bedroom level but you feel it in your body. Do I break out my old Acoustic 220,320 or 320B heads? Personally I’d rather sell them as cool sounding as they are and get the PJ rig. Don’t know if I’m going to let my pride in the way of getting a “Dream Rig?”
@@theirritatedirishman5440 (I could agree with you more. However it is almost an impossibility. If I could bring my factory back to USA I wpould do it in a heartbeat. If I did it now, it would be sucicide for my business.
PJ21UK : Well,Mr. Jones, I have to tell you that I’m absolutely stunned by the sound and feel of your amps. I will be indulging soon!!! That’s what most guys don’t understand, there’s a difference between “Sound And Feel.” When a rig does both beautifully it’s a must to have. What I’d love to see is an amp like your’s with a simple foot switchable midrange? Someone wants that Jone Paul Jones scooped smily face sound? They step on that switch to defeat the mids. Want more of a “Growl?” It’s there. Merry Christmas Brother, talk soon?
@@theirritatedirishman5440 unfortunately all the American amp brands are under something else now so all these name brands are moving to China. Ampeg has been primarily made in China for several years now, they are currently owned by Yamaha. Mesa was recently bought by Gibson so it’ll probably be moved to increase profitability. Aguilar was recently purchased by Korg. If you want American made amps these days you pretty much have to buy used or stick with boutique level gear. But even the boutique stuff for example greenboy audio uses components made in different countries. Amplifiers are starting to be like cars. Even the cars that are mostly made in America have parts like airbags from China.
I try to find better speakers then my aadc600.. I lissen on speakers and amplifiers that cost like a new house.. Speakers cost 8.times more then my aad... Guess what.. I leave the hifi shop disipointed.. That i did not find more detail rich or honest sound then mine... To the story comes 40.houers testing whit cables... And I have one of the best amplifiers if you like realistic sound.. Ayre.... In end of al is it the combo that make the sound.. Not always price... Phil is a passionated sound king... Bless you al 🙏🕺
Seriously enjoying this video and was very crurious about this exact topic but I have to say for a guy into audio and a company that works with musicians you sure did a poor job of recording your own voice. Interesting content, but I have to wonder why someone who clearly cares about audio, is using the shit, built in mic on the camera? The same camera that they forgot to set to manual focus, leading to incredibly distracting focus shifts, accompanied by irritating thuds?
What the fok is going on with the focus of the cam all the time... pure amateurism. Is this supposed to serve the credibility of the video? fokkin hell.

Great Video Phil, I have the Session 77 Bass Amp and love it!
You have a pro talking pro stuff with budget camera set up focus hunting .
Would have been better using a phone with a wireless mic
Thnx Phil, I have cabinet ideas that haven't been tested or used yet.
I have seen tons of live bands yet never seen one using the PJB bass amps. I'd like to hear one someday. Any big national band bass player using them?
Paul Simon band
Video fine to me
I am happy about my Genzler 410 and 800 amp
Got 2 CAB-47 - So impressed Clear full sound, enough deep support
Try it - You might love it
Love the gear. Seen video again. Lovely devoted knowledge. Thank you Phil Jones
I’m a Markbass player with a cab 47 coming in tomm , fingers crossed for the low end
I have a pair of Platinum Audio speakers and am very happy with them.
Who the hell is typing on the same surface as the camera? Otherwise, very cool video.
That sound is the camera trying to auto-focus.
Too bad the guy that knows a ton about speakers couldn't find a cinematographer that understands how to shoot video. DO NOT USE AUTO FOCUS
Totally agree, total lack of coverage on this innovative gear, Im a cinematographer and bass player in STL and I’m trying to reach out to them to help show off there products
@@jaron_hayden Good luck with that, the information is invaluable but really tough to get through, re the focus issue.
and the noise/hiss.... Jesus, I love this guy and his products, but what's up with the content they create?
@@emancia Obviously they re not monitoring their socials.
@@idolbass dude said he was home with COVID
I just picked up a x-4 nano and it’s amazing! Selling some more gear to get a bigger combo for gigging :)
Did he say 80 basses
amazing video!
if you have such a high affinity for sound, why not show it by recording good sound quality on this video?
Great amplifers! I love this sound
Loved this - very inspiring video
I desperately watched this to the end , but I paid a heavy price for it .......
Brilliant man, amazing achievements in sound reproduction, which from me at least garners much respect for his amazing career. Now if you could just fix that spasming autofocus this would be much easier to get through.
great video! thx! Sound is fine to me...
Given the length of the fundamental wave of the low "E" (40ft?) Why is no one building those folded horns anymore? Acoustic 350B etc.
I guess he’s saying instead if using one big slow speaker you drink it an have two pushing the same amount of air more effectively
AAD 7001 by Phil Jones are the best small high end speakers I have ever heard!🪐
Hi. If someone could help here... I have PJB M-300 head + 12b Cabinet. Cant find anywhere how much oHm is cabinet ??? Its 12x5". For the head I found it 300w/8oHm or 450w/4oHm. Just wondering can head works on 2 oHms ?! :)
Really interesting interview, too bad I can’t make out what he’s saying.
At some point the bass moved, did he play it??? 8:20
It went through a warp in space and time.
Lordy the audio is so hissy and the clunking of the auto focus is very annoying. Amazing content, terribly captured.
i really wanna be like this guy
Interesting! Thanks.
Wait, he gets tired of the weather in the UK, so he moved to Boston? lol
Jesus Christ! I couldn't get through 10 minutes with the Autofocus blasting my ears. Did they even review this before they put it out?
Update
So much wisdom and experience shared in this video. Respect! I enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you.
PS: The recording was terrible though. ;-)
Brilliant!!
Brilliant! Thank you…m
Thank you so much for uploading this very informative 🐵👌
Unwatchable due to camera malfunctions.
good video. volume is quite low. if you turn it up someone heavy-handed typing on the surface that the mic is on. very annoying and distracting. some audio post-processing please. high pass filter, noise filter, and normalization please. otherwise, like I said. good video.
It is the autofocus of the lens you are hearing - that said this is the reason to manually focus is this type of situation
Professional audio companies should absolutely be able to produce professional sounding audio in their web content. I agree completely.
I tried to watch but that constant tapping and refocusing in the video made it too annoying to watch despite wanting to know the info. WTF was that?
that's the sound of autofocus in the camera
Phil is right on the money
The camera operator needs to turn off the auto-focus. That's where all the 'clunking' in the audio is coming from.
I’m thinking about buying some Phil Jones stuff but I am not on board with anything to do with China.
Own a pair of AAD 2002 .
In the HiFi world...in my opinion... the best woofers size Is 6.5 inches.

Can't hear watts? What about Allen Watts? Lol
Why Phil uses small drivers. Proceeds to tell life story in detail.. I got things to do man, let’s have it 😂😂
If you grew up with Pino I'd want to hear about it too
CedarStudio would fix this - but then I am biased #cedaraudio are my employer.
Seriously enjoying this video and was very crurious about this exact topic but I have to say for a guy into audio and a company that works with musicians you sure did a poor job of recording your own voice. I'm watching this and listening on some pretty cheap studio monitors and there is some boom when the camera shifts focus. What the heck? You're in the sound business for Pete's sake!
I'm 20 minutes in and I still don't know why they use small speakers. GET. TO. THE. POINT.
Interesting content, but I have to wonder why someone who clearly cares about audio, is using the shit, built in mic on the camera? The same camera that they forgot to set to manual focus, leading to incredibly distracting focus shifts, accompanied by irritating thuds?
and REALLY bad lighting!
This video is funny because he’s talking about such technical things with regards to audio, but the audio of this video is such crap.
You need to replace your camera its so annoying and very disturbing. You have use an external microphone for that camera or put the focus to manual.
Was the camera sitting on a giant plywood box? Holy sh!t! Unwatchable with headphones. Too bad. :(
You're unwatchable.

What the fok is going on with the focus of the cam all the time... pure amateurism. Is this supposed to serve the credibility of the video? fokkin hell.
