It's amazing, I hated Hilda when I was a kid moaning nagging old bat, only now I'm older I can see what an amazing character she is, quite smart and quick witted also has a heart of gold and conscientious.
Yes - She was more the type of women our Mums and Grannies were very familiar with - The Elsie Tanners were the type they all gossiped about while Hilda was no threat and if truth be told was a bit like them themselves back in the day
It’s so nice of Mike taking Hilda out for a meal i love ❤️ this episode thank you 🙏 for the upload i love ❤️ the old coronation street so many memories
Drinks were so much cheaper then. 47p for a gin and tonic is equivalent to £1.90 in today's money, yet in most pubs now a G&T won't leave you much change from a tenner!
Remember who was in charge in the west. Reagan was US president. That's when our housing market went through the roof. Same in Britain. Gail and Brian were out priced. Sad.
I watched during the 70s and early 80s mostly ' not so much 90s ' today 's Corrie I can't even understand ' dark and depressing ' like a different world ' Ken Barlow is the only original ' part of the cobbles.
Great to see Hilda looking so lovely. ''Never even been in a bank.'' 🥰 Mike was often a cold-hearted corporate bugger but he also had these great moments of sweetness, understanding and pure class... Meanwhile, Emily reminds me of a character from a Jane Austen novel, more fitting for the 1880s than the 1980s. I can't understand why she considers herself homely. And Dierdre never tells her she isn't, even while encouraging her! lol
Emily and Mavis were an antidote to the plethora of strong, brassy female characters on the street. They both were as important, well written and brilliantly acted but in a more subtle and complex way.
I’m glad Hilda won that raffle because it’s about time she was treated like a princess, I ❤Hilda’s character she makes me laugh 😆 and smile 😊, I ❤the old ones of Corrie better than today’s Corrie thank you 🙏
This is so good. I prefer watching this to the current Coronation Street. There are no characters you really like (except Rita, Ken, Gail and Adam Barlow) The storylines are believeable not like now. Why did it go SO downhill?
These are the golden years before Redmond put a body in a patio and airplanes fell from the sky in other soaps. For me that was the watershed on when soaps changed.
The internet and social media makes it so that one's attention span is very short. So they want to try to make coronation street and other shows as exciting as can be....some people don't want to spend the whole hour watching one thing anymore
To add my two-pennyworth - I remember reading an interview in the early Noughties with one of Corrie's contemporary producers after the first lesbians were introduced to the street. And before anyone accuses me of homophobia I found the characters of Sophie Webster & her gf Sharn very likeable and at that stage the "issue" was well handled IMHO. But then this producer was quoted as saying something like if we can "educate" viewers ..." and that's where he lost me and it was also about the time the show began its sad descent from must-watch entertainment into dreary, humourless "let's put every one of society's criminals and weirdos" into our favourite street. Not only was his attitude arrogant and patronising but he completely missed the point of why Corrie had been so popular for so many years. Loving these wonderful classic episodes.
Ivy and Bert talking about their hardships when they first married, but just a few months ago, Ivy was telling Elsie, how Bert insisted on them buying their home and furnishing it. The writers really do take liberties.
I'll second that opinion ' they don't hold a candle to old Corrie or Crossroads eg ' Eastenders has gotta be the worst of them all ' like Hell in a part of London.
These episodes really are Gail & Brian overkill. Gail & Brian's relationship, Gail & Brian's wedding, Gail & Brian's house, Gail & Brian's baby. I shall be glad when some other characters get a look in. As for Ken and Alf, they can now start the Two Dead Wives Club.
There's an episode missing in coronation Street July 1980, it's the episode where Alf and Renee go on the driving lesson and later where the accident with the lorry happens. Maybe that episode by mistake comes on in August 1980 coronation Street. I noticed in the February 1980, there was a episode which should've been in January 1980 the episode where ken and Albert tatlock were talking whilst reading newspapers, as I said that particular episode was in the February 1980 and should've been in the January 1980 sequence episodes. I know because I've got the d.v.d of January 1980, and that's how I know. Coronation Street classic fan.
I made a few mistakes along the way. Write the numbers of the episodes that are in the wrong month for me so I know exactly. The missing episode is in the "Missing Episodes" video.
@@professionalgun6674 I'm affraid I don't know the number of the episode. But as you said, it's in the missing episode video. But I won't be watching it, it was very very devastating seen Renie in that awful accident even though that episode was filmed 42 years ago. And Madge hindley who played Renie hadn't been in coronation Street for only a couple of years! I wished the directors had kept her on for at least a few more years into the mid eighties.
I have been enjoying watching these episodes but I wasn’t looking forward to seeing the episode where Renie was killed. I remember watching it when it first aired when I was 5 years old. I found it really disturbing then. I then saw it again a few years ago and was shocked at how graphic it was. Even by todays standards it’s disturbing. I still don’t understand why they chose to not only axe Madge Hindle but then kill off a particularly gentle light hearted character in such a brutal way?
Would that have had anything to do with the recent ITV strike? In relation to the earlier ones ' there was a break in filming during the strike ' so it was behind schedule for a few months ' my theory.

Apparently the producers killed Renee off because she and Alf made a humdrum couple. I can kind of see where they were coming from because though Audrey and Alf were like chalk and cheese they had an interesting relationship. Renee was a bit of a go nowhere character in that sense.

Hilda. The greatest soap character in history. Played superbly by Jean. A world away from what Corrie is now x
