Don’t be so hard on yourself. Just remember, artists paint from live models (nudes and portraits) all the time! Is their art less valued? If a landscape artist is painting what he/she sees in front of them aren’t they copying what they see? Does that diminish their skill? I don’t have a photographic memory but I too like to replicate, as realistically as I can, what I see. I think many artists who think that art is only valuable if it’s created without looking at something, probably can’t paint or draw realistic art! I love art that looks like a photograph. It’s a real challenge to be so accurate that someone can’t believe it was painted! You have to be “really able to see”what you’re looking at in order to paint realism. But you also have to have the talent and skill to paint what you see! It also takes real skill to be able to mix paint colors to capture the colors in nature so that they don’t look garish or cartoonish. Many fine artists can’t “see” the colors or replicate them and so they work in black and white. Are they less of an artist? So, don’t be so hard on yourself for copying a photograph. You only have to be careful not to plagiarize someone else’s work!
Beautiful, wonderful words of wisdom ^^ Can you believe this? My daughter in first grade was painting a picture of a house (all children have to do some picture) and my daughter put some mountains in the background. Her teacher told her "I'm very disapointed in you" and then later on, while all children were sitting on the mat, her teacher said "I won't mention any names, but sadly some students were using there imagination when it came to art." This teacher apparently majored in art when she went to university, and I was so shocked to hear that someone could say using imagination in art was a bad thing. I will show my daughter this video, I loved when you said always leave room for the imagination to flow. Much love and I'm excited to see more! Hopefully do some paintings today, you've given me a good dose of inspiration!
This teacher belongs to the many who kills creativity and imagination. I had a similar experience, decades ago with my son at school, 2 nd grade in art. They should be fired ! This country education needs to foster thinking and creativity.´I’m so sorry . Your daughter is lucky to have you. It is so damaging. The teacher shamed her. Unreal! I have been an art teacher and made sure to always support, guide, encourage from the place the child is. Enthousiasme, good self esteem follows, regardless of the results. It’s the process, that counts anyway. Thank you for sharing.
That happened to me with my own father (he's actually an artist and his work gives us food and everything we needed) but please, make that teacher never go near your daughter again. I abruptly stopped drawing at all, and when I give a shot and got recognized (basically every time I give a shot to drawing I got recognized by some artist friend) I just can't handle that recognition and got really sad because I just can't belive them. I'm a comic soul maker, but I just can write the story and point how the panels should go to my team, because I CAN'T DRAW without thinking I'm a failure to my father. Please make that man never go near your daughter again, creativity could be killed in such hurtfully way.
Shame on that teacher. A comment like that can scar a child for a long time. So glad she told you about it and so glad you are helping your daughter through what must have been a devastating event
Mr. Gurney! OMG! Thanks for stopping by. And thanks for all your teachings. I'm a great admirer of yours! Greetings from Yucatán México, there are many dinosaur fans here because of the Chicxulub crater. Muchos saludos maestro!
Me gusta como en el resultado se siente más la sensación que da la foto sin tener que ser igual a la foto, la calidez que el degradado le dio a la cabeza del perro hizo que se sienta más cercano que en la foto original, siendo que estan a la misma distancia 😭💕
Thank you for validating my use of reference photos. I'm still the one painting. There are many people who do not have the capacity to visualize. Its an actual condition. I can think it, I just can put it into a picture in my head. You are an amazing artist and I love your videos.
@@hedgy369 you are absolutely right about it. Many people has it and they are not aware. New studies are being conducting about it and it is so interesting. Thanks for mentioning the terminology. Blessings.
You can make a sketch of an idea in your head. Then take pictures of yourself or friends (like Alex Ross would do), make models on silly putty (like James Gurney) or even use 3D applications. Anything goes, and most commercial artist would do whatever it takes. Reference is a resource to bring life to your ideas not a shackle. And I believe there are people capable of drawing things from imagination, but not before soaking up tons of reference. To be honest, to me that's more of a party trick than an actual merit.
@Sumaya Ben Saad there are online tests which are good because you can find out exactly your strengths and weaknesses , I found i am good with faces but really fuzzy with everything else. 'How to draw' (drawing and sketching objects and environments from your imagination) by Scott Robertson helps me with objects and perspective.
Excelente pintura, me gustan las explicaciones que das, pienso que aunque se copie la imagen, el dibujo hay que hacerlo y ese nadie lo hace por nosotros.
I've always struggled with references and always felt like I was just replicating a photo onto canvas, thanks for your reassurance that it's okay to use references :) I've been wondering how to bring out the glow in sunsets/ fire for a long time and this trick is amazing! Can't wait to try it on my next painting.
When you do portrait painting, you are using a reference, the model. When you do plain air, you use reference, the scene in front of you. Art is not simply from the imagination. Artists have always had to use "references" in order to paint, even the greats.
My art teacher let us paint what we want and present it to the other kids (this was in elementary school) and I used a reference to draw a human face and my teacher yelled at me and she got fired for doing this to a lot of other kids :)
I do love this series you have painted, using several different methods. I, too, follow James Gurney, an artist who brings scenes to life with skill and minimal working of the image. Thanks for sharing this new technique.
I’ve watched all your current videos on the dog. This one really taught me how the base layer is so important. Also, your comments on references as important are for me very true. But, to have the courage to deviate from it to represent your own interpretation is for me, what art is. My process is to take photos and work from them in my paintings. You have solidified my confidence in this approach. Thanks for the tips.
Wow. What a great idea and a fantastic effect! Thanks for crediting the original artist/source, too. I am a portrait artist and, like you, can’t paint it if I don’t see it. I am in awe of artists who paint from imagination.
Genial!!
