@jasmit kaur sahi ...when you count for subnets or hosts, you start by counting from 2 and double as you go (i.e.: 2,4,8,16,32,64....etc.). Also, when you count for subnets you count from Left to Right. When you count for hosts, you count from Right to Left. So, you always subtract 2 from the HOST side and you only subtract 2 from the NETWORK side if you are NOT using the Zero subnet. In my examples, the only time, I count by 1 and double as I go (i.e.: 1,2,4,8,16,32,64128) is when I count the BIT values in each OCTET. I do have a YT video called "Starting at 2 & Double As You Go"...this might clarify the method to my madness.
+The Networking Doctors I've been out of the IT game for a few years, and even when I did work with submasks, I didn't have to do much unless it was giving a machine a static IP. I admit, I had to watch this video at least 5 times in a row, pausing, taking notes, copying his diagrams....I figured out on my own about counting by doubling each number in the sequence beginning by 2 for subnets (left to right) and same but except right to left for the hosts; but I admit it took several times of me wondering why the hell he didn't start with 1. It all makes sense now, reading these comments its funny how many people it threw off about why he began by 1 and then by 2; I finally understand sub networking now, and this video is the best i have seen on youtube. Jay Matthews Paul Lampron Oh I forgot to subtract two from the host side. But thanks for the mathematical equation. all I do is simply x.x.x.1111|0000 which equals 240 in the last octet, count by 2 from right to left, and double as you go till you get to the line and subtract 2. @Brahmanand Narsule Please excuse my oversite, since I was trying to answer in a hurry is happened to all of us, but you do subtract 2 always from the host side as I explained in the video :)
Today I will call it "Let's Correct Laz Day!" ***** What all of you don't know yet, is that I'm creating my own vocabulary words...heck! I may just decide to publish my own Dictionary...LOL! After all, who would of imagined that "LOL" would now mean "laughing out loud", or that BTW would now mean "by the way", or that a symbol like the @ sign will now be representative of the word "at". Therefore,@Networkified, in what will soon be known as "LAZ's Dictionary", the word "oversite" will soon be known to represent "oversight". BTW; not only was it a play using the word "site" ;) - but I was also typing from my phone at the time. I'm in front of my computer now! Please let me know if you find any other words that I can add to the infinite vocabulary for the new and upcoming "LAZ's Dictionary"... LOL! :)
I’ve tried and tried to understand subnetting with other videos, memorizing charts and what not....30 minutes in, I finally found an easy way to subnet!!!! Thank you Mr. Stonecold!!!!!
I love this guy and his t-shirt. The Network Doctor got me through my CCNA 1- 4 courses. I now have my Associates and working on my Bachelor's Degree in Cyber Security... Thank You!!!!
I failed CCNA 640-802 a few years ago. Because I missed apply an access list. I got complacent I my current job I didn't retake it. I see you teaching the gns ccna course I will go ahead a buy, this is gold. Thank you very much
This guy doesn't mass around, I would never think he does networking and could teach :) I guess don't ever judge the book by its cover.. ! On the serious note... Thank you so much for all the info.. Please don't stop sharing your teaching methods and examples of things... You simply are amazing at what you are doing!
Thanks Ma, don't worry about it, I get a lot of that same misconception. Unfortunately, most people do judge a book by its cover. However, I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and as a famous Psychologist said, listen to the other person as you might be able to learn something from them....it's been a great advice for me anyway.
This was extremely helpful. Thank you for making this! I was trying to understand why at 17:44 you started counting from 2 rather than starting from 1 (as in the normal 1 to 128). Earlier in the video, you were counting starting from 1. How do you know when to do either of these? Thank you again for your amazing videos!
Everyone gets confused about that. So, I created a video to explain the method to my madness. Look for the video named “Counting by 2 and Double as you go”... it should clarify it.
This confounded me as well. I believe the case is: Count for hosts, right to left, starting with 2. Count for subnets, left to right, starting with 2. The increment (and therefore the broadcast calculation number) is derived from the BIT VALUE, which starts with 1 (starting from the right). This is why he counts the hosts and subnets on the bottom and counts the increment number and the broadcast calculation number on the top. Bottom: Start with 2's. Top: use bit value. Please correct me if I'm wrong about this. I've started taking Laz's CCNA class on Udemy. It's great! Thanks Laz!
I've been trying to understand subnetting for a long time. I don't mean to be disrespectful, honestly, but there are a lot of videos on RUclips with contributions from people that either make it exceptionally difficult, or do not know what they're talking about. I was just about to give up when I came across this video. Thank god I did. This has got to be the very best video in terms of clarity in explanation, teaching technique, and knowledge. Thank you sincerely for providing this exceptionally good video. A sincere thank you. I totally understand it now thanks to you.
I'm currently taking IP Subnetting in my NTEC class at Clark College in Washington. I sure wish I could pause my professor from time to time like I did this video!! Sure helps to grasp the situation better when u can keep up, LOL. Thank you for this wonderful video!! I wanted to add on a side note that your book IS my textbook for the class, though this video helped out a great deal more in understanding it. Thanks again!!!
Hi! My company using 106.133.196.0 IP address and using submask of 255.255.255.0, how come they used class A IP and they use class c submask, . hope you can help me about this thanks
Thanks, Laz, I hope you're doing well. I have my Networking exam in 51 minutes and I haven't touched anything till now. I understood the core idea and the way to do it but I'm more confused if you start from the right or the left for what. Anyways, this video made me realise how good a teacher can be if you give your best effort. Your accent and the confident/ aggressive tone delivers the message right across the room waking up every slouching student.
Why when calculating the /28 Network you started counting the mask bits at 1 but when calculating the network with 100 hosts you started the mask bits at 2? Am I missing something or was that just a mistake? Great video though very helpfull.
I don't get the comments saying "why is he mad at me" "why is he yelling". He sounds like a normal dude, just coz he doesn't look your average IT nerd don't mean he's angry.
firstly thanks for the great video. I just wanted to know why is it that sometimes you count including the one like at 15:33 but at 22:20 you count starting with 2?
okay i watched that video and what i understood from it is that when counting the bit values you count in ones and that is used in order to calculate the range?
I've already committed these numbers to memory, I've been looking for a method for subnetting that works for me for a while. with books, classes, boot camps. and every time they give me a very complex way of getting the answers. I got this shit down in a afternoon watching this video. you filled in so many questions I've had for so long. I never right comments on videos , but this video takes the cake.
First time I watched this was 2013. When I'm looking for a refresher for IP Address and Subnetting its 2021 and still the one I'm looking for.Superb content.
I remember saving this video in my "watch later" for a reason as I wanted to learn subnetworking. I come back to it years later and it's still as good as I remember it. Thanks for uploading this. It's very easy to understand, and I am using this as a reference for my Network+ vs what the book N+ shows (as far as how to subnetwork).
We all have different ways of learning. It seems that yours is auditory which is enhanced when your hearing is stimulated by a high decibel frequency, which helps your brain 🧠 to retain the information. 🤪
Thanks so much Teacher! I'm currently a banker trying to initiate a career transitioning to IT.... but despite the fact that I'm still very green in computer networking, you made this course so easy and interesting for me to understand. I've subscribed to your channel and hope to be thoroughly bred by you. Thanks again.
Coming from app-dev background and wanted to learn networking deep but yet simple, OMG! This is the best thing I discovered on youtube in ages..thank you sir, you are a rockstar.
My husband has been teaching me this subject and at first I get it and then forget it. He gets frustrated and the. so do I and then want to give up. It’s just a matter of practice and reviewing for me. This is a great video for reviewing, thank you :)
Feels like I'm back at school again with an amazingly passionate teacher that kinda scares you into passing.. ha ha. Kick ass video. Top notch info!! The only channel I'll need for networking / routing setup. It's important to add some dry humor and comedy in, it puts the brain in a much more receptive state. That's probly why it's such a hit! Love the clear and emphatic speech. We need more Teachers like you bro!! Teachers that are passionate about there field. Thanks man!!!! Legend!!!
Great class! I needed a recap and watched other classes but couldn't remember how to calculate and the logic, your class what perfect because it was just like I had learned almost 20 years ago no new frills. Thank you.
i really enjoy your way of teaching. its blunt and straight to the point. Not going to lie, i have been struggling to grasp this concept in my ccna classes but after watching your vid i feel more comfortable with the process than i have felt in the last 8weeks of study. So thanks for the video :D
IP addressing and submitting is the Kryptonite of all IT professionals. So, don't feel bad...you are not alone, that's precisely why I made this video. To help those like yourself. A newer version will be coming out in 2016!
The first 20 minutes is more helpful then the half years worth of networking lectures I've attended. There are some things you just cannot learn from PowerPoint slides! Thanks a bunch! Very informative and to-the-point.
I was lectured an entirely different way to subnet in my training for the ICND1 class today.. it completely screwed me up! I'm going back to this, this is the best way Laz thank you, and thanks for your dynamic teaching style. Never boring.
I am in a networking class. Intro to routing and switching using cisco. My professor hasn't taught me anything and all of a sudden he gives the class a project to design a ip scheme. I paid for your online course yesterday, watched probably 20 (short) lessons. Now, I'm almost done with my project.
Thanks brother! ..I really appreciate this message and glad that my class was able to help you. So, now, all I would like for you to do is "pass the word around"...and let your professor know if he would like for me to do a live appearance for FREE
@@thenetworkingdoctors I already told my class about you and posted a link to your site on my class discussion board. I'll try and run it by my professor about the live appearance.
@@thenetworkingdoctors I was wondering. Are any of your labs downloadable. I'm having a hard time recreating the network based on the topology you show in your videos. Right now I'm working on your eigrp lesson. The 1841 routers you use don't have a serial port so I'm using generic. And I tried a cidr 30 (255.255.255.252) on my ip addresses but they are conflicting with each other. So I adjusted them a bit changing the third octete seemed to work. But now they aren't working on the 10.0.0.0 network. I'm assuming I would just need to do a few more configurations with eigrp. I'm sure I can figure it out so it will work. But I'm having a bit of difficulty.
Thanks Sir, Being a VoIP engineer for 5 years now, I have been looking to learn subnetting for years..the best video I have ever seen. Now it made me very clear about subnets ! Appreciate it a lot.
Great work Laz! I'm from the Philippines and I must say, every tutorial that I watched so far are so clear, informative and concise! I really like how you repeat important information, over and over again! Hours of reading are getting clearer because of your tutorials! Thank you for all your effort! Salamat! Mabuhay ka! (Thank you! Long live!)
Never imagined I would see this long video. Every thing you told is important. Everything on point. Built more confidence. Hope I'll take less than 30 sec in subnetting questions.
I've taken so many network classes and two CCNA courses. Never gotten an explanation like this. WOW dude your extremely awesome. I have ADHD and this really explained subnetting and its so easy hahaha. Thank you Thank you. It feels so good when it finally clicks after two semesters of network classes.
Your video was very good. I'm enrolled in an IT support specialist certificate course and I think your videos can really help me succeed. Thank You very much.
Hey Laz, I have watched this again as many times before!, I truly love this tutorial because it's the best subnetting video on the net in my opinion. I want to say that this video helped me sooo much as I had a penny drop moment after watching this vid... I'm somewhat a subnetting master now because of you! I watch this video on different occasions because it brings back memories of how useful it was to me when I struggled with IP addressing. Laz you have my vote and respect always you are truly the king of IP.
Thank you for sharing this, really! I've been taught Subnetting in 3 different ways, not counting this one...after I forgot how to subnet yet again I found and stayed on this video to review...In the end I'm shocked at how practical your take on subnetting is, I remember thinking with the other methods "Oh god look at this address I don't want to pick up pen and paper now to solve it" while with yours I can find the numbers in the same time I spend thinking some excuse! Amazing!
Thank you Historian, I am glad the video helped you. If you go to www.thenetworkingdoctors.com site and click on the products tab I have my book, "The only IP Book You Will ever Need" in PDF for 4 dollars. You will learn subnetting, VLSM, Route Summarization, IPv6 and IPv6 subnetting, using my method. No fluff, straight to the point. Laz
I must say I appreciate the format of your videos more than a lot of the others that I have seen on RUclips and other sites. Your methods are especially easy to understand for someone like myself that has knowledge of these topics, but has not used them in practice for a long time. I am sure your videos will ensure that I pass my CCNA cert the first time around. Thank you for doing what you do!

Oh by the way, lol, I was answering from a restaurant having lunch, through my Iphone...LOL!!!!!!
@Brahmanand Narsule
Please excuse my oversite, since I was trying to answer in a hurry is happened to all of us, but you do subtract 2 always from the host side as I explained in the video :)
Today I will call it "Let's Correct Laz Day!"
*****
What all of you don't know yet, is that I'm creating my own vocabulary words...heck! LOL! :)
So helpful, took notes on paper as if I was in his class. Would love to of had a teacher as exciting at him.
Thanks Adam!

I’ve tried and tried to understand subnetting with other videos, memorizing charts and what not....30 minutes in, I finally found an easy way to subnet!!!! Thank you Mr. Stonecold!!!!!
Glad I could help.
I love this guy and his t-shirt. The Network Doctor got me through my CCNA 1- 4 courses. I now have my Associates and working on my Bachelor's Degree in Cyber Security... Thank You!!!!

2012:Bless you
2020:is that corona?
🤣🤣🤣
This video really helped me. Taught me everything I needed to know about calculating IP and subnets
Thanks Sean!
very thorough and understandable, thank you sir
Thank you William!
@@thenetworkingdoctors I will be watching that shortly! Greatly appreciated
Oh my! You just made me sh*t on my pants (pardon the swear word) realising how easy this can be.. Thanks a great deal.. I'm healed
It's great! Thanks Laz!
@@Whodamanimal Came to the comments looking for this - thank you!
"did i memorize the hell out of it? yes I did" amazing =)
Best explanation on YT just saying....
Thanks Afro Head!
Thank a lot this was a very important lecture for me . cause I am from Afghanistan.
Glad I was able to help 👍
Doesn't matter where you're from
Thank you sir. The video was great !
Thanks Novin!
Why did you stopped making videos please upload complete networking videos.
Thank you so much 😊 And let me know when you pass! My email is: info@thenetworkingdoctors.com
I can't thank you enough, you don't know how much i struggled with subnets THANK YOU VERY MUCH i wish i found this video earlier
My pleasure brother, glad it was helpful.
Why when calculating the /28 Network you started counting the mask bits at 1 but when calculating the network with 100 hosts you started the mask bits at 2? Am I missing something or was that just a mistake? Great video though very helpfull.
yeah.. i didn't got that too...
Thanks for helping me out! 😊
For further explanation you can watch my video called “Counting by 2 and double as you go” It should clarify your question
Thank you Johnny Sins
Neptune's Beard Lmfao, thought I'm the only one.
hahaha
I don't get the comments saying "why is he mad at me" "why is he yelling". He sounds like a normal dude, just coz he doesn't look your average IT nerd don't mean he's angry.
Thanks Mr Robot!...I am normal right? 😎
I agree! It kept me focused. Thank you very much for your tricks.
This was great. He reminds me of the first CCIE engineer I studied under. Very no nonsense and to the point. Great job!
I've watched some Arabic Videos but I'm feeling this Video is the right one to understand IP Addresses and Subnetting.
Thank you Sir.
firstly thanks for the great video. I just wanted to know why is it that sometimes you count including the one like at 15:33
but at 22:20 you count starting with 2?
+Junz Vids ...I explain that in another video called "Counting by 2's & Double as you go"
okay i watched that video and what i understood from it is that when counting the bit values you count in ones and that is used in order to calculate the range?
thats a kai greene back right there :D
If only that were true...LOL :)
you are a mastermind who knows how to train body and mind ;)
انت رائع جدا thanx
Thank you Gogo Gogo...I think?
Laz, thanks for your "down-to-earth" teaching methods, helps us (regular people) understand this so much better.
Thanks a lot for shouting at me and giving me attitude. Much appreciated.
Thanks Jermaine!
I’m glad that I was able to her 😊
Remember that although the video is very old, the information is still relevant today.
Love the direct approach, delivery, and down to earth attitude. Takes the the "geek" out of this field. Thank You!
There's actually a newer version that I made, but for some reason, everyone likes this old version better....go figure?
2020, 8 years later and still one of the best videos out there
massive thank you :)
Thank you 😊
Very helpful, closest I got to understanding IP. Excellent teaching.
I swear I learn better when someone is yelling at me. Thank you. It really is easy when you break it down this way.
You’re welcome 😉
We all have different ways of learning.
It seems that yours is auditory which is enhanced when your hearing is stimulated by a high decibel frequency, which helps your brain 🧠 to retain the information. 🤪
Thanks so much Teacher! I'm currently a banker trying to initiate a career transitioning to IT.... but despite the fact that I'm still very green in computer networking, you made this course so easy and interesting for me to understand. I've subscribed to your channel and hope to be thoroughly bred by you. Thanks again.
Welcome MOA! I know you will do great 👍
Coming from app-dev background and wanted to learn networking deep but yet simple, OMG! This is the best thing I discovered on youtube in ages..thank you sir, you are a rockstar.
Thank you so much Rohit! 😉
I don't know if you still check this RUclips, but this video literally cleared up everything for me. Thank you so much.
+Andy ...thanks Andy! However, it's a very old video and there's one that it's newer in the channel. Hope you subscribed!
Legend!!!
I had left exact one hour to submit my lab...I watched the video and I DID IT IN 10 Minutes....thank you very much
1 day until my ICND1 exam, this video really nailed IP and subnetting in. Now I can be sure I won't waste too much time on IP questions, thanks!
I’m glad it helped!
Let me know when you pass 😎
Great class! I needed a recap and watched other classes but couldn't remember how to calculate and the logic, your class what perfect because it was just like I had learned almost 20 years ago no new frills.
Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
i really enjoy your way of teaching. its blunt and straight to the point.
I've been watching many subnetting videos. All I got to say is you explain it the best compared to others. Thanks for this!
+Robby “Laz” Napoles ...thanks Robby!
Thanks Sir, Being a VoIP engineer for 5 years now, I have been looking to learn subnetting for years..the best video I have ever seen. Now it made me very clear about subnets ! Appreciate it a lot.
+vamsi sampath ...glad to be of help vamsi!
You’ll get there 😊
I've taken so many network classes and two CCNA courses. Never gotten an explanation like this. WOW dude your extremely awesome. I have ADHD and this really explained subnetting and its so easy hahaha. Thank you Thank you. It feels so good when it finally clicks after two semesters of network classes.
The way you explain the subnetting is so simple, thanks.
Laz
Great teaching.
may god bless with more knowledge
Thank you Zaahir...and may God bless you too!
