- In this episode of Flight Chops, we’re #Flying #IFR in the RV-14 to visit Sporty’s and see the latest in #FlightSim tech! (We face some challenging weather along the way, but do what general aviation pilots do, and adapt the plan to execute the mission! :)
The Yawman Arrow used in the video is a 3D printed pre-production model that is used for testing, but is 100% representative of the final design and all the controller’s features.
Sporty’s is going to be the exclusive distributor in North America (and they’ll have better international shipping rates).
You’ll be able to buy in two places:
www.Yawmanflight.com
and Sporty’s

FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

Jay stealing that FlightChops thunder is amazing! On another note, I am VERY much looking forward to the Yawman Arrow. I have MSFS2020 at home but setting up the PC to run it is a pain with all the plane pieces and *sigh* large updates. Infinite Flight is my go to home flight training sim. Currently I use the in device accelerometer but this controller would change everything. Looking forward to it!
looks like everybody in the comments has my same complaint; even though we have good computers and all the flight accessories we want - we just don't have the space to set it and forget it, meaning we have to setup and tear down every time we want to sim and sometimes I just don't feel like it. This controller is exactly what I've been looking for when I just want to jump in and sim.
Right?! I thought this thing fits a perfect gap, and I am happy to help get behind it (and that's legit - they're not paying for promotion)
KMGY learned to fly there, my Flight instructors name was Orville W. not that W . Sportys was a regular stop when running around southern Ohio
From my perspective as a combat flight simmer (IL-2 & DCS), the entire layout should be mirror-imaged from left to right. Throttle / collective on the left, stick on the right. Just like real life fighter / attack aircraft from any time period. And like radio-controlled airplanes, drones, etc.
Maybe make two separate versions, one for GA fixed-wing (yoke types), and one for everything else?
Also not a fan of those delicate little pull-out things. Sliders along the bottom (beside each middle finger) would allow better access without letting go of anything else.
Also, just checked that Sporty's link. US $249 is far too expensive for what this is. You can get a VKB NXT EVO stick for half that.
I remember that evening and the weather! You aren't kidding about the unforecast storms. I'm based nearby KMGY and flew that evening to Indianapolis and back since the weather was supposed to be clear all night. My logbook entry is all about the weather surprise. I launched just as the unforecast light rain started to fall, but soon Cincinnati approach was slammed with deviations for weather, a bunch of practice instrument flights running for home as actual IMC set in, then a wind shear alert at the international airport! I landed back home about the time those storms were over I69 and was surprised by patchy dense ground fog after landing. KMGY was a great diversion as all the Wx was south of there.
Thanks yeah… I’d spent the week leading up to that trip thinking icing risk and high winds were going to be my only real threats. Pop up Thunderstorms was not on my radar and that was a good lesson.
This is a really cool solution for someone like me who HAD a 10k flight sim set up and lost it in a house fire and can’t replace it right now. I’ll definitely be ordering it.
Oh man. Sorry to hear about the fire. Glad you’re ok.
It's fun to see KPCW pop up in this video. That's my home town and the place where I went on my first flights as a kid. Now with a PPL and working on the IR I live nowhere near there anymore, but would love to make the long XC back there to land some day. Thanks for unknowingly bringing back some great memories
I look forward to seeing you at expo Steve! I only wish I could be flying with you. Alas, I'll be Air Canada A220 yyz-iah.
KPCW ! What a lovely airport, my grandpa owns the farm next to the FBO. Spent lots of summers there. Whenever I’d hear an apu start up I’d run straight to the back field. It was like my own mini Oshkosh lol. Now I’m lucky enough to fly in from Cincinnati 👍 That controller is going to change the game though I can’t wait to pick one up!
I may have to get one of these controllers soon. I am still putting my sim setup together. It would be super cool to have something I can still learn from when traveling. Laptop and that controller would be pretty sweet. Eventually I will have the time to actually take some lessons and become a pilot. The plus is Sportys is just down the road a ways from me.
Saw a video last week from a USA sub and they use an X-box controller due to the "new young sailor's" are used to that kind of controller from childhood. So there might be a market there as well.
As someone who doesn't have the space for, nor play enough flightsim to justify a full flightsim setup, this controller seems like a very good compromise. The fact that it is manufactured in the US makes it a much more attractive option. If it's compatible with more games than flight sims, it would make it much more interesting and I would be willing to pay much more than 100$ for it.
Planning to fly my RV6 down to your neighborhood in July, a friend and I will be flying from Dryden to Ottawa and Gatineau to visit the museums, and then over to Wingham for a couple days of seeing how many airports we can put in the log book! He said I should message you and find out if we could meet? I’ll be rocking GoPros for the flight and making a few episodes worth of footage for when I get home and a Flightchops Cameo would be so awesome!
July 6 and 7 will be spent touring the southwestern Ontario area and I’m open to flying almost anywhere
Ok awesome - can you start an email thread about this and I will see what we can coordinate - flightchops at gmail dot com
@@FlightChops will do
Very cool tech 😎
Appreciate it being made in the USA. Looking forward to buying one. Agree that I need more practice with my EFB. 😊
New drinking game: take a shot every time you hear them say "supply chain"
😂
That was great Steve, and I really love your RV!!! 8) --gary
great video and while I don't sim much I am going to looking into getting a Yawman looks like it would be good to start out with and see if I wanted to get more serious.
I'll be making my 5 night cycles BEFORE I head east on my trip.... thanks for the reminder :)
as someone who owns a really complex full simulation control setup I am all for a control pad solution for when we don't wanna setup our full system! I often find myself too tired to get all my controls setup for a flight and just sit down on the sofa with a controller. I mostly fly helicopters so please make a heli version of the controller with a slider to adjust cyclic sensitivity!
Can't wait to get my hands on this new controller and try it out with InfiniteFlight as MS-FSIM... The Sirius XM integration on the Garmin panel is great, something I'm going to look at for sure.
What an UMMazing flight and new controller! I'm excited to see the controller come to the Xbox console. Also, I will need to recreate your flight in MSFS2020 on the Xbox. Thank you for sharing.
Like button smashed!
I play Graphsim's F-18 simulator on iPad. When you use a gamepad with it, the second analog stick allows you to look around. Hopefully all the other mobile sims will allow look-around with second analog stick. ( I noticed at 13:28 he had to touch the tablet screen to look around)
That is an awesome product ! A right stick version has to be made as well. Some people like to fly combat sims where throttle is left and stick is used with the right thumb. This will give people ideas - that flight sim is possible on a controller. Very well done!
I love the XC flight vlogs and look forward to the other ones you have in the queue! (Like going south for paint)
That one is coming before AirVenture 2023!
I play msfs with ja xbox controller. This will be something I'm willing to try
Cool I would buy one. Seems like a good solution for some Xbox flight sim
Some feisty areas on that radar! Sim stuff looks great.
Great to see I69 again. Can't tell you how many times I've said "Clermont County Traffic"
Thumbs up 👍 fun at your fingertips 😊 can you on your upcoming information, go through your IFR equipment on the RV14 thanks. 😊
Absolutely - an upcoming episode covering the first 2 years and 200 hours will break down everything in the plane, what things cost, what I like and what I wish I knew before the build.
@@FlightChops Thanks that would be awesome. I’m thinking you’re reading my mind!
Very cool
Interesting controller, will definitely want to try before I buy though.
Would love to see this controller
Please bring this to Xbox Series and Microsoft FS 2020
In my opinion, based on limited use of an Xbox controller in flight sim before I switched over to a flight stick, one of the ways to make a better controller for flight simming would be to make the stick a bit longer. I think it'd give a better sense of movement. Beyond that, the more buttons, the better. I'm sure I'd still prefer having a flight stick, but I can definitely see a future for controllers that are specifically designed for flight simming.
Joystick extender exist. I used KontrolFreeks back in console FPS playing days. They come in all different heights/textures.
That controller on would be revolutionary on Xbox.
Hi Flightchops - can you give details of the ram mount for the iPad mini and it’s canopy attachment bracket? Thanks.
This would be a game changer. Damn now need to buy another tablet
I’m in 🎣🎮
Was that used on an Android Tablet or an iPad in your demonstration?
@FC - That's the koolest-looking aircraft in YT. How are crosswind landings?
Thanks! She does great in cross winds!
Intriguing, not interested though at the current MSRP. " Feels like an xbox controller" but costs 4 times as much is not a great endorsement.
I agree with another commenter that one of the issues with a handheld controller is the sensitivity of the short control throws, but if they made the stick longer it would only be usable on a tabletop, maybe optional longer throw controls that are screwed on like the sticks on a rc remote control would work.
Really unhappy to hear that this wont be available in the UK 😢
How does that work because I thought you had a US pilots license as well, do you just to have to fulfill the greater of both licenses?
Which ever reg is more conservative is what you’re to follow (as far as I understand). I think in the U.S. it is 3 night landings in 6 months to maintain currency for passengers? But anyway, in this case it was a Canadian registered aircraft and I was operating it with my Canadian license, so it’s a moot point to argue I guess.
We need a twin beech in infinite flight. Make it free too
How can I buy it
What's the beep when you take off?
That’s the angle of attack.
That AT controller uses F C G A without the phonetic alphabet? Never seen that.
Wish this had been edited a little different. I would have preferred to see the flight down as one episode and the interview as another. 12 minutes in and I'm giving up as I am confused.
This was considered, but leaving the real-world flying portion out of the video usually leads to way lower engagement on the nerdier stuff (like the interviews and demo). Good feedback though.
A deep dive into the flight will be a dedicated episode, but yeah, it would have way undersold this one to not include at least some of the real world flying adventure to get there.
@@FlightChops Any chance of the full interview un-edited being put on the patreon. I would happily pay money to see it.
Short term, I hadn't planned on an extended version of this one on Patreon, but I could do that. Are there any questions you'd like expanded on that you didn't see in the interviews in this episode? I let it run longer than I'd initially planned, because I thought what they were saying was interesting and relevant, so most of the good stuff did make the fine cut here.
I'm currently editing a longer / raw version of the debrief that Ryan did with Luke about his crash - that will be on Patreon shortly.
🤗👍👍👍!
I would buy it if it supported iOS, but if not, not.
Are they using ipad at first if so what game ?
Hey how about a “Flight Chops” magazine?
now just make one for xbox
:)
Absolutely no challence in the content , faboulus job. but the focus breathing on the camera ahhhh its soo uncomfortable. for people who watch the videos faster than 1x , its even more bad.
besides everything else that couldn't be anymore perfect. just the focus issues , if fixed would be amazing.
love you and hope to meet you some day.
Nice commercial.
Bring foreflight to android, please.
