    Between this hike and the Wave, and the difficulty the government has created to hike either, it really has started to feel like this area is off limits. You either have to be in the area and just hope you get lucky on both, or hope you get lucky months in advance. This place is 1100 miles from home, so what am I supposed to do, just drive there and hope? And then you don’t even know until late the night before, so you have to burn money on a hotel in Springdale, possibly for nothing. It’s just awful how many trips are ruined because of this policy. Some people may only have one shot at this in their lives. I’ve tried for the Wave about 30 times over the last 8 years, and have still never been chosen. There is something wrong with that. As for Angels, I did it in 2017 on a weekday and there were maybe a few dozen people. I know sometimes it gets crazy, but I just don’t see how permits should be necessary every day. I mean mid winter on a weekday? There is just no way it’s crowded then. I think the Park Service sometimes does too many across-the-board approaches to things. Their solutions aren’t nuanced enough, and just lump everything together as one. Thank you for the info though, I wish the Park Service gave this stuff as much thought as you do.

      I agree with you, and it is frustrating. I especially HATE the lottery system, because, as you said, you can try over and over and over and still not get the permit. I've tried for Wave permits so many times and still haven't gotten one as well :(

    I hiked this trail at 6am without a permit a few days ago. I was the second person went to the top on that day. On my way up on the chain section, I met a guy coming down with his dog, he told me, he started 5:30am and this is a nice little trail😂.

      Do they check for permits while on the way down?

      @@JaskeeratBrar no, it was still early

      A couple of things, per the Zion website: "Permits are required 24 hours a day, seven days a week to hike any portion of Angels Landing. Hiking Angels Landing without a permit is a violation of 36 CFR 1.6 (engaging in a permitted activity without a permit) and is punishable by a fine of up to $5,000 and/or six months in jail."
      For anyone else who reads this comment, please also note that dogs ARE NOT allowed on the Angels Landing Trail!

    Does after 9Am means right after 9 or anytime between, let say 9am and 4PM? (right now there are only 2 choices, before and after 9, There is no more after 12

      @DirtInMyShoes  2 месяца назад

      Yeah, looks like they've adjusted the timing. So it looks like after 9 just means anytime after 9 that day. Most people want to hike before 9, so that's probably why it's such a large time slot after 9.

    In your opinion, which has the better view, Angel’s Landing or Observation Point?

    • @DirtInMyShoes
      @DirtInMyShoes  3 месяца назад

      A few years ago before the main trail closed down, Observation Point was my absolute favorite because the hike was part of the adventure. While the view is still gorgeous, I think Angels Landing beats out Observation Point for me now because you get an adventurous trail and spectacular views. The experience of getting to the views is a big deal for me!

    Hey Ashley, is the address you used in this video for yourself anonymized? If not you should reupload this with it blurred because it’s on full display. Stay safe.

    It is better if you remove your PII info (Personal Identification Info) like tel, address when you share the screen. Lovely video, just to be safe

    Thanks! This is really helpful. I have to say the permit system is a great idea. I hiked it 5 years ago and it was just way too crowded. There were addults trying to push my 12-year old daughter out of the way. It was pretty dangerous. Limiting access actually makes it safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

      @DirtInMyShoes  6 месяцев назад

      I agree! I think it was getting too crowded to be safe. And people are always so impatient on that trail :(

    Does group size affect the odds of obtaining a permit on the daily lottery?
    I sent a message online asking this question and they didn't give me an answer.
    My situation is that I really want to go, but the two people going with me are iffy about doing the chains. They would be satisfied at Scouts Landing. I'm considering adding them in case they change their mind, but if applying as a larger group reduces my odds, I'll probably just request for one person.

    • @DirtInMyShoes
      @DirtInMyShoes  3 месяца назад +1

      Yes, group size matters. If you're a group of 1, you'll have a better chance of them being able to find a space for you :)

      @DirtInMyShoes thank you so much! I put in an application for one and won it that day. Incredible hike! Almost chickened out at some spots but stuck it out and made it.

    Written permission from your mom should be required for this hike no matter how old you are. 😆
