  • Footage of the maiden flight of my Cub 250 built from a Willy Nillies kit. Has a Cox Pee Wee .020 engine modded with a Cox International 3D printed backplate mount instead of the stock aluminum fuel tank. A 1/2oz Brodak tank is in the fuselage. This balsa model kit was modded with extra dihedral for 2-channel rudder/elevator RC flying. The firewall was also relocated aft to better fit the Cox engine. Dymond D47 servos, Spektrum AR419 receiver, and a 300mah NiMH battery pack are onboard. Covered in Cub Yellow Willy Nillies covering film. Engine powered by Sig 25 Champion fuel. It was far too windy to attempt a maiden flight of this model but I got tired of waiting for better conditions. This should be a great flyer in calm conditions.

Excellent share - nice sun when it is cold and drizzly here. Proper fuel-driven prop cranker, too. Thanks....

Cute and Nice! Maybe a bit more dihedral would increase the responsiveness? Just my 2 cents. :)

The dihedral is just right, IMHO. It responds to rudder with decent banking. Flew it more today in calmer conditions with good results.

Ah OK. The wind was the culprit! :)

Nice Willy Nillies Cub! That sound brings back memories. I thought a .020 would move it faster. Are those Cox engines still made? I built the Eaglet 250. It looks and flies so nice I got the Jr. Skylark 250 kit. New subscriber.

Thanks! Keep in mind that this is a reed valve Pee Wee .020. It's not as powerful as the TD version, though it's admittedly not running up to par in this video. It has since seen better performance.

I forgot to answer your question. The Cox .020s are no longer produced.

Could your wing be rocking with the rubber bands crossed like that? I know on my larger planes if I don't put some straight across on the pegs I can really tell the difference.

It's secure. That was the wind!

Seems like the tank may be a bit low in the fuselage when the fuselage is in sit mode during start up. Prime runs with no feed thru catching fire to the engine.
Run time actual total I see you edited the actual flight? The engine cooled in the air and the engine ran rich power is key on a windy day. I like to set the NV with the
engine level and lean to peak to compensate for the additional cooling in the air what you get is a better NV setting for flying. Rudder only is good if you have power on a windy day was some scary moments a reminder of what your working with heheh fun stuff Troy well done for getting out there and making it happen!! With the box fuselage it caught all the wind and had the plane flying in a slip maybe the Cox 4x2.5 prop would have gave you enough air speed to fight the wind better. I prefer using aftermarket props the 3.75x3 would have gotten you a commanding flight: www.ebay.com/itm/E-flite-3-75x3-Prop-UM-F-27FPV-Q-EFLUP037503/332792731271?epid=1900122470&hash=item4d7bfe1687:g:tFYAAOSw1SJbjo2E

Hey Brad. The runtimes on these flights was unacceptably short, though the flight vids were edited. The tank is actually as high as it can sit in the fuse, on top of the battery and directly behind the engine. Getting the correct needle setting has been a bear on this engine. It either tends to go rich or lean during flight. One factor is that it's the standard Surestart NVA that Cox Int. includes with the plastic backplate. A fine thread needle would probably run more consistent. Baby steps!

Oh, check out the vid I put up today. Finally got some decent runs out of the Pee Whizzer.

What was the weight of this plane?

It weighs 234g as seen in the videos.
