What a character: so full of joy and spirit. I still find it hard to believe he's left us tbh. I will always treasure the great memories he gave to us all. Cheers DJ!
Our entire town seemed to come our for D.J's funeral service. Shipley literally came to a standstill. I'll never forget that awful day. Rest in peace dave.
Yeah, I was there in the church at his funeral. He was my brothers best mate for many years. We all grew up together, he lived at the end of my road. He was very talented from an early age. His parents Tony and Pauline were good people. Pauline passed away too not so long ago, RIP.
@@chopsauce2397 I never met his mother, but heard a lot about her, God rest her soul. Truth be told, never really knew dave very well, and got to know Tony better in later years, after becoming a kinda fixture at Jeffries bike shops down there at fox's corner before they moved. The only silver lining in the whole heartbreaking story is how dave inspired ian Hutchinson to continue the tradition of bradfordian riders making it big at the T.T, and now young dean Harrison is flying the bradford flag with huge success. I'm sure dave would be smiling down on our fellow bradfordians continuing in his footsteps.
@@NiSiochainGanSaoirse Totally agree about the legacy. Hutchy is from Bingley too, just up the road from Shipley and Baildon where Dave's parents lived as you know. I have so many memories of Dave and his family, but it was mainly late 80's and early to mid 90's. I fondly remember Dave getting his first ever race bike delivered to his house in a crate. It was a brand new FZR 600 direct from Yamaha. He had all the race fairings and exhaust ready to fit. I am sure it was either his birthday or Christmas present. He used to ride the BMW demonstrators home from the shop from time to time when he was 16, it could be anything, even a K100RS tourer. A bit naughty though and he used to come past us on the back wheel often too! He was a capable trials and motocross rider too. So many memories...
The Greatest Natural Talent of them all and just an excellent Personality....Mozart on a motorbike. No doubt in my mind. And when I need a smile I watch this vid. Cheers David.
looking at this is a poignant reminder of what a loss it is to racing. a true northerner, basic, fun loving young man. true talent. fuck it, how tragic. fearless young spunk. gone far too soon. I do miss this man. can you imagine it now? the dunlops, martin, Jefferies, head to head? I wish.
remember DJ smashing Olivers Mount...as a Yorkshireman, theres nothing better than seeing another Yorkshireman smash your home track.. gone but never forgotten DJ .
Such a shame he isn’t around anymore can always remember him when I was a child watch the nw200 when he rode on the yellow and red bike was always a favourite of mine. The bloopers section at the end shows how much of a character was lost. Excellent video!
Watching this brings back memories of his great battles with joey Dunlop at the TT F1 isle of man 2000 and the super bike race at the ulster grand Prix 1999 , 2 great riders , great memories , such a cruel sport sometimes
dart99mm There’s no wisdom in that statement since it’s only the great names that are so cruelly taken by shitty luck, not shitty riding - it’s like saying the sun was blinding that day - it’s blinding every bloody day, it’s also a carcinogen - intelligent designer my arse. I think it’s more cruel to survive and be unable to ever ride again.
joey said afterwards that might have been his favourite ever race. After messing up the start Joey was on a mission immediately. I always thought the bad start is what gave Joey the edge that day. He wasnt taking prisoners and such a close race he was in the right frame of mind before all the R1 Yamaha could get away.
A true legend , some of the commentary on this is amazingly funny , " if your not clenching ,I am " . Now riding with joey and all doing laps having laughs on the circuits in the sky
I had the privilege of meeting Dj at the 2003 Nw200, he was such a nice guy and bloody funny too, made me laugh the whole time i spent with him. The memory of the phone call from my gf on That thursday still upsets me, such a huge loss :-(
Too much pressure to get the magic lap time on his shoulders when the bike wasn’t handling right in practice. We got off the ferry around the same time that he’d crashed and the place was eerily quiet. After the roads opened we took a walk through the road of the crash scene and saw the devastation of what had happened. Huge loss to the TT. Was destined to be breaking records and his presence was huge. He was visibly faster through rhencullen where we watched him destroy the opposition year previously. The week wasn’t the same without him. Still remembered and talked about
I've heard so much about David Jefferies but never know how he looks like and the kind of character he is till I chance upon this video. Great personality and rider.
man am I glad I clicked on this vid!! what a rider!! that mad Sunday at the end was something else! I hope your on 2 wheels where ever you are dj! r.I.p
Bumped into him one evening that year - then watched him from the bottom of Bray Hill, minutes before it all went wrong. Such a lovely guy & a truly great racer - so sad to lose him.
well written sir....it was a very sad day and a lot was learned from the unfortunate set of events that led to dj's crash...... great video of his riding, thanks duke!
A TRULY GREAT RACER. I THINK HE RACED IN THE 1993 500 GP AT DONNINGTON AS A WILD CARD.. JOHN MC GUINNESS SAID JEFFERIES COULD RACE ANYTHING. HE WAS MADE A DIFFERENT GRAVY. HE WAS FASTER THAN THE BACK MARKER AND HIM ON 1 WHEEL. CLASS ACT.
First video of the TT I watched was the '99 meet, his first wins. Amazing rider, and as far as I know the only rider to ever set lap records on three successive laps of the Senior (last lap of 2000, followed up with laps one and two in '02 -- no races in '01). Lap one of 2000 was set from a standing start, took something like 45 seconds off his own record, lap two was as I recall 25 seconds quicker still, going into the pits.
My first ever vhs TT video was 2002 he was awesome class of his own, I sat there in my barrack room one night pissed up with my skid lid on, stupid I know but also when I had my boy he couldn’t get enough of it
You sound like a good bloke to have down the pub man!, R.I.P Dave...bloody shame you had to meet the oil at crosby,no one's fault, but what a bloody S**t thing. You didn't even make a mistake. I bet the rider who's bike pissed the oil out felt a bit crap poor bloke. You would of forgiven him I know Dave and the marshalls for not acting quick enough. Because your top man! You should still be about after 10 years at the top. I will ride for you this year buddy (look after us chap if you could).
I have never seen a rider who physically imposed his self on the motorcycle like D. Jeffries. He seemed to put it where he wanted it when he wanted it and refused to allow it to do what "it" wanted...
What a gentleman we lost, against lockear he pulled back so that lockear was safe with that back marker. He could have gone through and forced a mistake but Imo gave lockear the win. Sadly sadly missed. Rip.
Around 1998-99 is when I really started watching the TT, and DJ was the real up and coming star. At the time DJ flew in the face of what a Motogp/ super bike racer should be, instead of being horse jockey size he looked like he enjoyed a few to many pies and pints.
Sort of fell out of love with the tt when dj lost his life, you could see big Dave nearly bending the handlebars trying to squeeze every last ounce of power out of anything he rode he was the boss of anything he chucked his leg over. I'm sure if he had of been a slighter guy he would have been even faster, immensely tallented funny guy RIP Dave your likes will never come again
what a loss to the sport he would have given john McGuiness a run for his money if he had lived. john is a great to though shame he is injured this year 2014.
Dave completed a hat-trick of hat-tricks in 1999, 2000 and 2002 (sadly no racing in 2001) DJ won the Formula One, Production and Senior TTs in 1999 and 2002, in 2000 he won the Junior, Production and Senior.

Do we know what caused him to crash.. mechanical issue or something? Maybe just a half second lapse of judgement. This guy would still be racking up tt wins . RIP

DJ WAS A TRUE LEGEND
I loved seeing him and Ian on the v&m yams , but he was way over his head at the 99 ulster gp against joey on a 750, he was humbled...

funny they didn't show the UGP where Joey beat David and the all conquering 1000cc R1 on his ageing 750cc Honda, nor the 2000 F1 TT for that matter.
vol demort the onlt reason Joey win that is because DJ's bike packed in
