- The Isle of Man TT 1999 turned out to be a record-breaking year with absolute solo and sidecar lap records broken and with David Jefferies winning his first TT Race. There was a dramatic start to the week in the Formula One Race - half the field had been sent away when the red flag was shown - Paul Orritt had crashed heavily at the bottom of Bray Hill. He escaped serious injury, but his machine was in the middle of the road.

The riders who had got through continued for the remainder of the lap and, after a delay, the race was restarted, but reduced to four laps. Joey Dunlop opened with a lap at 121.81mph to lead Iain Duffus by 3.1 seconds with Ian Lougher in third place. David Jefferies, James Courtney and Phillip McCallen completed the top six.
Joey still led at half distance - by 2.8 seconds - but from David Jefferies, with Courtney now third. McCallen retired at the pits. The lead changed after three laps - Jefferies led Dunlop by 14 seconds - the rest of the leader board remained the same.
David Jefferies won his first TT Race at the fastest-ever average speed recorded for a race - 121.35mph - by 15.8 seconds from Joey Dunlop, who recorded his fastest ever lap at 123.06mph, with Iain Duffus taking the final podium place in third.

I was there this year, and in 2002 when he dominated again...
On the seacat on the way over for 2003 we received the news of David's passing and our whole group was left in numb shock which we never really got rid of for the whole 2003 tour.
Was also lucky enough to meet Joey at his escape pub in 99....and he was the politest most personable man you could possibly meet, signing our helmets and chatting freely...we felt like we had been with motorcycle royalty.
Respect to both of them, legends 🏆
@@leedavidson7314 yes buddy he had a raw talent.....we simply couldn't believe he was gone.
Happy riding to us all guys 🌈👊

All of these road racers are polite. That is the nature of road racing.

That R1 was quick . Tony Scott tuned engine. Rocket back then
Tony Scott probably has his name on more TT wins than anyone else. I'm not sure of the numbers but he probably has.
DJ what a guy. Met him, McGuiness, and many others in 2002 at a Road race supporter meeting, etched in my memory was McGuiness talking about (looking up to) DJ, DJ had a Mitsibushi Pajero Evolution and McGuiness told us that DJ drove it like a TT bike 😂.
Big Man DJ, 🌹♥️
