yea funny thing is i saw a few videos of people from other countries who showed up to get someone there to address it! the bahamian govt. is slow in response but quick in knowing others will step up to fix the issue BECAUSE this place is enjoyed by people from all over the world.

Virtually nobody in hurricane prone areas are building their house that way. I don't get it. At the very least, I would have a small cement bunker erected in my yard to double as storage room and an emergency bunker.
It's not so much the wind that killed so many people it's the surge between 8 and 30 feet. Be careful about a bunker in the yard as it could easily flood from the surge.

A lot of people from Haiti are on the island and they barely survive . Im sure if they could afford to build hurricane proof homes and emergency bunkers they prob would. When mother nature is ready to throwdown nothing will stop her! Stop fooling yourself that your house will stand up to a cat 5. Also, the concrete roof will be a dangerous situation when it fall and trap or kill anyone underneath it.
Even reinforced block construction (which you seem to have) loses much strength when debris impacts knock out a substantial part of a wall. And even if the house stands, you've got the storm surge to drown you when it goes higher than your house. If your house is standard block construction you're going to be in for a big surprise if something like this hits you. My 45 years in all forms of construction tell me that nothing short of a bank vault is guaranteed to be standing after a storm like this, and only bank vaults and bunkers are built that way. No house- not even yours- is fully hurricane proof.

@@rkan2 They DO have stronger building codes, much like Miami/Dade here in the US. And most of those homes were reinforced concrete block which is different than reinforced concrete but quite strong in itself. Not the normal 'cinder block stuff you see in the US. Some homes may have been wood framed but those can be built to withstand 150MPH winds now. Where the problem came in is that the winds here were 165MPH with higher gusts, and wind strength increases at the square of the increased velocity so that 15 MPH difference more than doubled the winds pressure on structures. When you add in the water pressure from a storm surge, and consider that 165MPH equals an EF-3 to EF-4 tornado, and also think about how long that storm lasted then it's a miracle anything was left standing even if no large debris or boats were flung into those houses. And yes- some of the nicest homes were built more strongly but that is an expensive option which most people simply cannot afford to do. Nobody knows hurricanes better than the Bahamas and nobody is better prepared for them, but with a storm like this all bets are off. We had our Katrina which exceeded our plans, Dorian simply exceeded theirs. Has this happened in the US anywhere outside of Miami the destruction would have been absolute with nothing left standing at all. So please get your facts right before commenting and trying to demean these people who build better than we do.

there are no trees left there everything gone..people move and rebuild in the center areas of those islands get away from those coastal areas because you are all sitting in the middle of a hurricane highway and there gonna be more coming year after year
The hurricane blows a bunch of salt water into the air which is bad for a lot of plants. Between that and the storm surge, a lot of plants die or at least turn brown for a while

The Brits sent two hospital ships and significant relief aid. On GBI many Brit expats remained on the island and still spend their days unpacking containers of relief supplies and cooking emergency meals.

No most of these homes were made of cinder blocks. We don't do wooden structures, only in the shantytown of abaco. And as for stilts, we never had a problem of flooding in this area.
Darwin in northern Australia was totally flattened by Cyclone Tracy on Christmas Eve of 1976 (I think), The houses there were built on stilts. It reminded me of Hiroshima -nothing was left standing. Afterwards, new building codes were introduced, but a lot of people were so traumatised and had to live in caravans for such a long time, that many people left and never returned, and many marriages broke down.
I know it may be stupid,,.... but,, with all these fancy missile's and terrible bombs being made why can't somebody try to 'Blow The HELL' out of one of these storms when they are way out at sea?

Dream on sucker. There is so much strength and power in a hurricane structure even at it's beginning that nothing we're capable of doing can much alter it, and certainly not on a long-term scale. To "blow it up" successfully would mean destroying that part of the world with the explosion. That's what science has to say on the matter.
Doubt any significant damage was done. The Atlantis is located on Paradise Island and they got less impact from Dorian in comparison to Abacos and Grand Bahama.

Heartbreaking but its gone, no point in rebuilding. This will happen again, no tourists will come for years if ever. The final death toll will never be published but its clearly going to be in the tens of thousands

Basically a 40 mile wide EF4 tornado. Unreal and heartbreaking.
It was insane. 38 hrs we endured. Three tsunami waves.
That sat dish at 1:10 seems to be just fine. From now on all houses must be built as sturdy as that.

Wind damage looks less in Freeport since the hurricane closest approach was about 25 miles.

It is the southern side more damage occurred on the northern and eastern area
Near the end of the video it shows many of the mansions and they seem like they did well during the storm and some look undamaged

There was Michael in the panhandle last year and Harvey in Houston the year before that did a lot of flooding and damage just like this.
