Saturday 4th March would see four steam locos take to the main line in three seperate tours! Arguably the stand out tour was Vintage Trains Shareholder Special double headed from Birmingham to Didcot and return with Castles no.7029 'Clun Castle' and no.5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' where at Didcot they were to feature in a four Castle line up alongside no.4079 'Pendennis Castle' and no.5051 'Drysllwyn Castle'. Also running was the Railway Touring Company's 'The Cheshireman' from London Euston to Chester and return via the WCML with Jubilee no.45699 'Galatea' running as no.45627 'Sierra Leone' albeit with 'Alberta's number on the cab side! Finally was the first in a new series of semi regular tours from Saphos Trains 'The Golden Arrow'. With pick ups through the Midlands on the way to London before being steam hauled from London to Canterbury and return by a loco from the London pool. Finally also on Saturday 4th March Brighton played West Ham in the Premier League! For me fairly last minute I was able to take a holiday day which allowed me the opportunity to plan to see my first main line steam tours of 2023 and also get to the football!
In the end I decided to drive to football (I usually get the train) via watching The Cheshireman and the Golden Arrow, tempting as the Castles were they were not on the way to Brighton! So we start at Apsley and two cameras capture 'Galatea' pass through the station, unfortunately heavily assited by the diesel at the rear. Just four minutes later we see Class 90 no.90001 bring the passenger pick up leg of 'The Golden Arrow' through heading south to London. Next its over to Kent for the steam section of 'The Golden Arrow'. In charge for the first run of the 2023 season was WC no.34046 'Braunton' in full 'Golden Arrow' regalia. We start at Alotment Bridge just west of Bearsted station, and the summit of the long 1 in 60 climb from Maistone East. Two cameras show Braunton working hard as she crests the summit and heads towards the water stop at Lenham. Heading on to Lenham we see 'Braunton' in the DPL before moving to the end of the down platform and two cameras show 'Braunton' bring its heavy train out the DPL and through the station towards Ashford. Finally, after a trip to Brighton and back (an excellent 4-0 win) its a quick stop into Apsley again on the way home and we see 'Galatea' drift through with the return leg of 'The Cheshireman'. A very nice way to open my main line steam account for 2023! Thanks as always to all involved in running the tours!

Thank you - I saw your video! I think they are running on that route quite a few times this year, plus Steam Dreams running up from Tonbridge via Maidstone. We will hopefully be able to catch a few throughout the year! All the best Ashley
