    The prep work described here is like "creating a file", in your brain, to store everything you learn from the book. Excellent advice. Been using it for years.

    Context= more information= better organization= better learning and retrieval.
    Edit: And it's almost like when you build context you are creating a puzzle that then needs to be solved by reading the book.

    I have always known about reading the Table of Contents first and looking for chapter summaries. I had never considered reading the index to get a grasp of the terms that will be used.

    I found it not only useful for law courses but as useful in almost reading all the non-fiction books and non-technical textbooks

      I only use it for non-fiction as I like some surprise in works of fiction.

    Sounds similar to Mortimer Adler’s methods in How to Read a Book. Great information, thank you!

      It's exactly his method, though condensed to a few minutes--saving people hours of reading his great book :)

    I appreciate your input and information in how to outline books. Could you provide what a typical poorly written outline looks like versus a strong and improved outline. Your description is helpful but examples with variables would help you drive your point home better. I had always thought that just finding the main point of each paragraph would do the trick. I guess I am wrong.
    How about how the improved outline really helps to "crush" finals?

      This is actually an excellent idea and I am going to put this on my list for future videos. Thank you for sharing--that's how I get my best topics.

    Excellent explanations. You would think this would be taught at primary school. Do you have a UK counterpart that you can recommend for UK law?

      I tutor students in other common law countries. Just earlier today I spent an hour with a student in Australia. Our laws are basically the same.

    Maybe a video on the best way to make law review?

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  4 года назад +2

      Thanks for the idea. Making law review depends on your law school. For some it’s only grades, at others it is a write-on competition, and at others a combination of the two.

    A good video like always! What subjects you would choose for the 1st and 2nd semester of 1L?

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  4 года назад +1

      In the US the first two semesters are all required choices-no options.

      And what are those?

      Generally, they include Torts, Contracts, Property, Civil Procedure, and Legal Writing.

      Learn Law Better thanks! 😊 what materials (book or a web-site?) you may recommend in order to have a basic overview of those subjects?

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  4 года назад +3

      Carolina Academic Press has a series called the “Understanding Series.” For example, there is Understanding Torts and also Understanding Property. These are concise hornbooks that provide a great overview of the law in those areas.

    what is stare decisis?

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  3 года назад

      Stare decisis is the principle that law in previously decided cases should not be overturned, absent significant changes in society or our understanding of the law. This is because society relies on law, and the constant changing of rules is not good for society.

      Learn Law Better Do you have any advice on how to convince a law school that they should accept you when you want to attend law school for the sole purpose of learning the law, but don't have any plans to seek employment as a lawyer or professor? I am just genuinely interested in the topic and want to learn about it and, if needed use the knowledge to help someone out.

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  6 лет назад +1

      In the United States, decisions are almost solely based on GPA and LSAT. Also, the ABA accreditation standards require that no one get admitted unless they are likely to pass the bar exam. Though law schools have some discretion, they are unlikely to budge from their standards.
      That being said, California has several online law schools, like Concord Law School, where admissions standards are not as challenging.

      Learn Law Better Good to know. I obtained a 4.0 on my Master's but haven't taken the LSAT yet. I assume it is similar in difficulty to the DLAB, AFOQT, and SAT but am still doing test prep to ensure I score as well on it as possible. I, however, was unsure how to approach the issue of not necessarily needing or wanting employment after graduation since every example letter of intent I've seen talks about how the person plans to go boldly forward after graduation. . . and unless it's purely for pro bono independent work, I have no interest in using it for anything other than mental stimulation. You know... Philosophia Kreitito Photon and all that jazz. 😊

    Which courses to take in college?

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  4 года назад +2

      You need courses that will help you develop critical thinking and writing. Those can usually be found in philosophy and history. Not the large classes that most take, but the upper level courses that majors take.

    Note: George Washington was distantly related to King George III, and the royal family. Don't write this down, it won't be on the exam.

    How you have the video makes it impossible to watch. I can’t pause or rewind. And I think this may be very important information but I can’t watch the video at my preference.
