- This video begins outside of the Manitowoc, Wisconsin harbor and brings you all the way to the dock. We follow Captain Curtis from the Pilot House to the After Pilot House as he docks the ship. Many thanks to Captain Curtis for sharing this with us!
Wow, for such a large vessel, she answers the helm quickly.
On a canal boat cruise from Providence R.I. to Chicago we watched the Badger come into port in Manitowoc. It was fascinating. Heading in at one point the anchor was dropped off the bow and the ship slowly swung around pivoting from the anchor till the stern was aimed at the loading dock. It was like a very slow-motion whip action.
Lol that little girl just chilling out, watching, eatin a cookie, supervising
She should definitely not be on the bridge during docking.
@@kathleenevans1201I was on the bridge when my father (who was a captain) docked the boat, and that’s why I’m such a good captain now.
@boataxe4605 That's different. The captain is your father. I did the same when my father was piloting the vessel, and I knew to keep quiet when he was busy.
@@kathleenevans1201 Yes,but how do you know that girl isn’t the captain’s daughter or granddaughter?
@@boataxe4605 Call it a hunch.
Those three horns were a signal for the dock crew that they were coming into port. I should know, I've lived in Manitowoc for 15 years.
The third telegraph for communications between the forward & aft pilothouses.
I am the only child out of 6 that was born out of the state of Texas. My mom always talks about the horns signaling for the dock crew that was coming into port. She was pregnant with me when my dad worked Manitowoc. I was born there and one day I would like to see my birth city.
Awesome!!
wow, I have to look for my wife because I think that was the time we went on the SS Badger and had a great meal and sandwich... it was a great trip and super nice weather.
If I remember correctly the way Captain Fitch use to call it- "On the Bud, In the Hole, Up the street" for coming into that port.
the horn is in D Major, what a great sound; to bad it's not a goal horn :D
2 things; one, they usually give warning when about to blow which they didn't and 2, sounds like there's a delay when pulling the handle and the noise :D
Look at that gleaming brass binnicle beside the captain. I wonder how often it gets the Brasso buffing?
Phillip Mulligan the telegraph?
Every Saturday morning when I worked there in the 60s.
Why is there a child on the bridge when the ship is being brought in?
Did you ever get a wind screen for your Mic???
Set extra Lookouts set condition three throughout the ship
Captain we have a radar Target off the port bow
2:49
Nothing to add
Wow, no maneuvering thrusters on that ship. That's like driving a car that has no steering wheel, and you are simply controlling the direction of the car by using the throttle and emergency brake handle.
What's the third Chadburn used for in the aft pilot house? The one captain uses at 7:41.
My guess, steering telegraph from the docking station to the bridge
@@DeltaStar777You guessed right.
Does Captain Curtis still command the SS Badger?
Jonathan Cutting Yes.
Why is there a little girl eating a cookie in the corner of the CAPTAINs room???
Maybe the Captains daughter? As a young boy I used to eat cookies in the corner of my fathers wheelhouse, I mean “Captains room”, and now I’m a Captain.
I admit to being a little surprised at unfettered access by pax in a sensitive area. But what do I know? lol.
