A friend of mine at this RV park was just having us look at her fridge and I saw that telltale yellow/green stuff in the exterior compartment. I knew that meant it was a goner but then I set out to locate the video I'd seen it in. It was yours! I should have known. You put out some of the very greatest how-to, reviews and general RVing content on all of YT. Thanks so much for everything. Now my friend knows there's no hope for the one she has and can shop for a new one. "Knowing" is so important. Nobody really wants to buy a new one if the one they have can be repaired for much less. Thanks, lovely couple. God bless you.

No doubt about it...Harry is one cool dude. Dometic makes good products. Hard to complain about failure after 15 years of service. Nothing like a Strauss waltz to help a job go better.

Not a bad lifespan on the Dometic. 15 years of likely full time use in all sorts of conditions isn't too bad. Most home refrigerators are replaced by then just the same. I have to agree with the Airstream dealership on the overnight replacement/repair on the refrigerator because the number one item that causes fire to RV's is the refrig. They just need to be extra safe in confirming there are no LP leaks and good solid electrical connections as well as confirming the unit is operating normally before releasing the RV back to the customer. Nice that they still had a unit that fit the cut out area. You fathers old Chevy's look wonderful. The black one had flawless body work as each body panel appeared to be perfectly done without any ripples or waves in them. You've got to hand it to those older generations, they have much talent and knowledge in many things. P.S. These days it's best to use one of the newer style fasteners such as a hex head, torx etc. in stainless vs. a standard phillips. A hex wont collect dirt inside the bit area like a phillips or torx providing there is enough clearance for them. I presume your diesel mechanic in Mesa, AZ recommended the Archoil additives? Many in the know diesel mechanics do.

    Hint for stripped screws:
Use a small power toll with a grinding/cutting disc to make a slit in the screw head.
    Then use a flat-head screwdriver.

Another great vid folks! Great to see you all working well together, and having a helpful dad is great too!
We replaced the ORIGINAL Dometic refrigerator in our '79 Sovereign just last year. Jennie was camping and called me to say there was an ammonia smell. Fortunately she unplugged the rig and got all the windows open to air it out. Also fortunate was that the leak was in the upper refrigerant pipes, so no oily mess below. Was difficult to find the right size but we got one very close AND on sale at CW. (YAY!) We did the swap ourselves and I was AMAZED when pulling our original fridge that all the screws were also original. It was clear that old fridge had never been moved, providing 37 faithful years of great service. I believe it even cooled faster than the new one does, but still nice to have new stuff in our AS. Hoping the new one will be as reliable but new and digital stuff seldom is. One day at a time!
ONE IMPORTANT THING TO MENTION is how critical it is to also clear the debris from the fridge vent above. This is a critical safety element. We've stopped at Colaw's many times (back when they had more AS's in their graveyard) and saw many, many burned out motorhomes where the fire clearly originated in the refrigerator vent area. When the old fridge is out, use your shop vac and get rid of all the pine needles and other debris that collect there. You'll be glad you did, and hopefully won't be going through it again for many years to come!

4:37 I know normal fridges, the reason is the compressor oil can drain out of it. The compressor is basically the heart of any cooling/heating system. Running the compressor dry without oil can cause it to overheat and basically die. Sort of like a car engine throwing a rod. I am a Commercial/Residential HVACR student.

I am not sure if you looked into this but JC Refrigeration makes replacement units for RV refrigerators. You can get the standard electric/propane or a compressor style like a residential fridge but much more efficient FTI incase some of you viewer were interested. Plus the replacement components weigh less and can be shipped fed-x.

I had a 32 ft Airstream International about 40 years ago that I lived in, and had the refrigerator stop working. So I can empathize with you. It was possible back then to just order a new ammonia unit without buying the whole refrigerator. It was extra labor, but I was single and had plenty of time to replace everything.

I would like to recommend using a sawzall to take the old fridge out. You can carve the old one up in pieces in mere minutes. I had a similar problem when a friend called with a large freezer that was walled up in his basement after a remodel. We cut that old whale up in about 5 minutes and hauled it out the too small doorway. A sawzall is a weapon of mass destruction for problems like this one.

Hey LoLoHo, congratulations on your new fridge. Our inaugural trip with our first camper will be in March of 2018. We are in New Jersey and it's a little to cold for us to start camping now. So we decided to do it in March in South Carolina. We hope the weather will be warmer then Jersey at that time. Great video btw...

For those screws that are tough, I use a mechanical impact hammer.
Not an electric one like a drill.
You hit it with a hammer and it turns slightly when the force is greatest.
Worked great on the screws on Japanese motorcycles.

"Easy out" a bit used to take out stripped, rusty, old screws. Predrill a small hole in screw, insert bit and unscrew without wallering out the original threads. Works great!😁
I find cardboard better then a cloth to use under things for moving. Cardboard slides so easily on floors and doesn't bunch up.
Also wonder if you used anything to seal the propane connection like teflon tape?

I was hoping to see if you added insulation around it and checked the enclosure for air leaks into the trailer. Mine needs some silicone to stop the cold air coming in.

Sean, i have alot easier way to swap out big and even small items like that. I call my rv dealer and he takes care of it for me. Of course it helps that i live only 20 miles north of Elkhart, Indiana. There is nothing that i can’t get replaced here including the trailer itself. Lol. Unfortunatly i have one shoulder that has been replaced and the other has been repaired so i can’t lift anymore. Kristy your dad is great your luckyto have him. Looks in great shape also. Safe travels.

When I replaced mine I built a 2x4 stool the height of the opening to sit the fridge on and placed cardboard on the floor to slide the unit on . Super easy replacement job.

Hey There - Thank you for sharing this with us. It actually answered some of the questions I had concerning the replacement of my Dometic frig.
I would liked to have seen more on the disconnecting & reconnecting of the wiring and propane etc.
Overall it was rather helpful though.
    Cheers mates and happy trails

Been there, done that. I replaced mine with a 3672RM and ended up having to make some slight modifications for the handle to work as instead of being on the front edge, it is on the side. I had to cut a groove in the Airstream trim.

Regarding the screws, (Opinionated Canadian Dude speaking here) the first thing I most often do when Philips screws are supplied with any appliance etc., is THROW THEM OUT. And replace them with Robertson Screws. (self tapping or whatever) Y'all have started calling them "Square Drive", but that's just another name. A rusted Robertson screw will break off before being so frozen as to not come out. That's it. That's all I got. Thanks for the video, and all the associated effort. *I did feel a little badly for Dad (Harry) there when he was taking a strain on that heavy fridge* . Don't hurt the old dude!

I second that on the Philips screws. That type drive is designed to limit torque by backing out the driver and if your driver is angled off a bit they back out the driver. Square drive, torx and hex drive screws are far superior going in and coming out. Get 409 stainless, 316 is pricier. if they are threaded, use a little lubricant to prevent rust and seizing.

Glad you guys cleaned up that ammonia. That's some nasty stuff. You might want to confirm if its corrosive. I noticed it looked like there was some spray on that propane line? Better to check and be safe and replace or clean that if possible than to find out its corrosive later when the line gets eaten through or cracks.

Great video on the refrigerator replacement. As a service chief at our local RV dealer i recentlr had a customer with the same problem. I was able to get a replacement cooling section for the refrigerator instead of replacing the whole unit. Its not a diy job like replacing one so i wouldn’t suggest it to anyone.

The one thing I would of done is to save the old control board - if it was the exact same model as those control boards are a $200.00 item. The thing with these RV Fridges is to keep them running and don't shut them down as the mixture thats inside the cooling unit has a chemical called sodium chromate which protects the inside of the steel tubing from the ammonia, along with water liquid ammonia and hydrogen gas. Once you shut down the fridge the other problem starts to develop in the foam pack and thats rust.
any moisture that collects on the outside of the piping will freeze which is fine bust once you turn it off for the winter season - any ice will turn to water and will just sit in the foam pack with no where to go and will create rust on the out side of the cooling unit. Well all it takes is a pin hole to develop and there goes your cooling unit. I have a fridge that I bought back in 2010 and is now 11 years running on gas and sometimes on electric and still going strong, here's a tip for ya - it's best to run them on gas rather on electric as the gas flue covers a bit more surface area of the boiler where the electric covers a bit less.

We had troubles with the shipping of our fridge, they put the forks of fork lift through the fridge, twice at the shipping dock. To finely receive a fridge it took three units in all, to complete one sale and almost two months.

I recently had a full size refrigerator delivered to the house and the delivery guys had these straps I don't know what they're called but it made it really easy to carry around a full size refrigerator I wonder if you could have used something like that to move it around and not have to slide it on the floor

I just replaced my Dometic refrigerator. The cut out size for the new one is the same as the old one . . .except the box is 2 1/2 inches shorter leaving dead space above it. That comes out of the freezer height. The cooling unit is the same size as the old one, 2 1/2 inches above the new cabinet. Why they cannot make one the same size amazes me. The new ones come from Elkhart, Indiana, the home of RV junk, where they cannot design one the same size as the one it replaces. Who wants a tiny freezer when you had a large one in the same amount of space? Knowing what I know now I would have put it up on a plywood base so the door wouldn't drag on the carpet. Or maybe bought a different brand.
