    I just finished my second time using this razor, and I love it. The technique and angle took some time at first, but now that I'm getting better with it, I can't imagine myself shaving any other way. Very smooth and close shave 🙂.

      I started shaving with the wilkinson sword shavette the other evening with a derby blade and have to say while I eventually got a reasonable shave it takes alot of time to get a reasonable shave the same yesterday evening only worse.
      I'm a firm believer that the blade is what causes a bad shave not the razor so next time I'm going to try it with the Wilkinson sword blade which is a very good safety razor blade.
      I hope it works because I like the technique for shaving with the shavette.

    I recently just got myself the SRB model and I really love it. It's an ingenious way of straight razor shaving if you can't invest in a traditional straight razor and strop, etc. It's economical and still does a great job.

    • @geofatboy
      @geofatboy  6 лет назад +2

      geofatboy exactly! I actually don't use fresh blades in mine but what can I do instead as I use the blades from my safety razor that are too dull to work for that but they still work perfectly fine for another 5 shaves or so in my shavette because by design the shavette is going to be much more aggressive anyways. So I can really stretch out the useful life portion of double edge blades that way if I want and they still give a great shave whenever I switch them over to the Shavette

      The best way to "train" for a Shavette is to become comfortable with a double edge safety razor. Once you get the angle down, and trust that the weight of the razor is all that you need, you can transfer that mojo over to the Shavette and have success.

    I've looked at shavettes a few times. I finally gave in to temptation and ordered one. I have two straight razors that need honing. I need to get them honed one of these years. Since the last straight attained an unusable sharpness level, I've been alternating between wearing a beard and shaving with a safety razor. Most recently while wearing a beard I've been shaving my neck with an electric razor, with less than ideal results. I'm looking forward to trying a shavette. I'm not sure if I'll just use it on my neck, or if it will inspire me to go beardless.

    Man!! What a great tutorial video! And I'm just blown away at the speed you actually shaved!! I'm only learning to use the straight razor, and by the time I've got through one side of my face, the lather is completely dried on the other side!!!! And as much as I love the beautiful look of the open classic blade, which requires maintenance, stropping etc, I've gone with the cheat model! Thanks so much!

    Thanks Geo, I find it helps to have at least 2 shavettes to provide somewhere safe to store the second half of the DE blade. It's not really worth stocking up on SE blades if you already have a variety of DE blades and there's much less choice in the SE market. Overall blades seem to last longer as less passes are required.
    In the UK the shaving shack have a few very affordable and manly designs in pure stainless steel no chrome or plastic and I am very happy with them and sometimes they give them away free on bigger orders. I found plastic handled ones like Bluebeard's Revenge (Dreadnought in US) don't have enough weight or a satisfying feel. I need to go careful and so not something I have time to do everyday but makes a nice change from my safety razor rotation.
    I watch these videos as even though I am happy with stainless steel ones it's always tempting to expand the collection and try something new but sometimes I find that the tools I buy just aren't as good in any way to the ones I already have. I've heard a lot of bad comments about Parker quality and the chrome on this seems unnecessary so will give this a miss. Maybe I will be able to pass my stainless ones down to my sons eventually.

    Hi, Geo. Thanks for another fine tutorial. Just wondering why you do not follow shave pattern of 14 stroke shave taught in barber schools, depicting typical beard growth patterns, versus your own pattern which, thank you, was the pattern I followed for the first 18 months of my straight-razor shaving campaign that began 2 years ago. As for the SRX, I wonder if you think, like I am beginning to think, that because of the length, heft and unwieldiness of this product (despite having pretty big hands) it is best used by a barber on a customer versus one shaving oneself with it. I find the length obstructs the view of my face and that the SRX is difficult to control in tight spaces. It is rare I cut myself any more, but this unit is unforgiving as hell when it does cut. I wonder if you think the smaller, lighter, 5.75" Parker SRW is better for shaving oneself than the SRX. Thanks, Geo. Semper fi, my brother.

    Hello Geofatboy, you are the best, as always. I have a question. If somebody is able to shave with shavette, which is nothing but a blade, without any protection, why do people talk so much about DE razors, about mild/aggressive, because if you can use shavette, you can use the most aggressive razor without any problems, because it is very close to the most aggressive razors, and it is up to you (your pressure) if you will go deep in your skin or be in the surface, no matter how much the razor of the razor blade is exposed.
    Am I right or did I miss something? Of course that with the mild razor you almost can't cut yourself, but if we talk about the aggressive DE razors and shavette, they are the same to me.

I've seen a few of your vids with the SR1 and I was wondering if you could notice much difference between them and if so which one do you feel does a better job? Also thanks for the vid(s). • @geofatboy
      @geofatboy  6 лет назад

      The SRX is heftier and a bit more expensive. You can get a great shave from either one, so base it on your budget and your eye appeal since you are the one that gets to shave with it every day. If money doesn't matter go with the SRX

    I am confused. As far as I know the brand Shavette is owned by Dovo Solingen and is used for their straight razors with changeable blades. There are numerous other straight razors on the market by other companies that also use changeable blades but are not called Shavettes, because that’s a brand name by Dovo.

    How did you feel it shaves and feels on the face in comparison to a disposable blade FILARMONICA... thx

  • @josecarrenogarcia3734
    @josecarrenogarcia3734 6 лет назад +1

    Hi Geo. Guys in my family always had a thick and strong beard. So shaving machines doesn't really do much to me, and I always used disposables, which doesn't give me a close shave (you can see light dots right after, even after several passes, and next day you can clearly see the dots a meter away). It was always fine for me, but now I'm growing a beard for the first time in my life, and when I do my neck line with a disposable and you see the dots the day after it's a bit ugly... So I was thinking about an straight razor to do my neck line and shape the beard. Several things: would a straight razor give me a very close shave so that my beard is well shaped at least for a day or two? Also, given that I'm a total beginner and by now I'm growing a beard it will take time for me to master well the technique, still a good idea? Finally, I love the dovos, I guess stainless steel makes much more sense than carbon nowadays (any good advantage for carbon?), Thanks a lot!!!

    Is there any risk of self decapitation or such with these shavettes? I'm tempted to buy one, but I'm worried about when it comes to working around the jugular. I imagine that you have to use much less pressure with these shavettes than you would with say, regular safety razors?

    Another good video. I see Parker has updated their "Hygienic" steel shavette. I've always heard that glycerin based soaps are harder to lather than standard soaps. Do you find that to be true when compared to something akin to TOBS shaving cream? Thanks!

    I wonder how don't you cut your chin without stretching its skin with fingers and at the angles like you do? Which angle do you apply? How come when I shave chin or any part of my face, razor kind of "grabs" the beard and skin beneath and cuts it?

    Question for Everyone......
    Can you guy chime in on DE vs Straight Razor. I like a BBS Shave, don't have alot, or long, thick facial hair, but I have to do SEVERAL passes in all detections to accomplish, no matter the angle head or type of blade. I'm 45 years old, + currently using a Razorock Game Changer with both agle safety heads... .68 + .84 with Soap Commander Honor Shave Soap. I have sensative skin and I get BBS, but it almost too much for my skin to handle. Pretty sure my hair just grows in at all angles + lays down. ??? I'll probably give this a go anyway down the line n see but wanted your guys opinions., since you definitely will know more than me.
    Thank you all in advance. 👍

    Hey Geo, I need some help. I’ve been using a CC for about a year now. I stopped using cartridge razors because I started getting really bad razor burn on my neck. I now have started to get RB every time I shave. I don’t know what to do. I use barely any pressure, feather blades. Nothing works. Also, I can’t seem to shave everyday because of my stubble. I start bleeding around my jaw line. I’m at a loss and don’t know what to do.

    I have a question...I have been using a DE razor for a bit and normally only get nicks right above my ears, but when trying a shavette I seem to get a ton more nicks all over my head. Do you have any tips that might help? I was wondering if maybe trying a heavier weight shavette could help, my current shavette seems to weigh less then my DE razor.

    Do you leave the cream to dry or do you wipe the excess lather from bowl if that makes sense! Because I lathered like this ontop the cream and not sure if I should clean or just leave to dry

    • @geofatboy
      @geofatboy  2 года назад +1

      I let it dry then rinse the dried soap and bloom the soap with water before my next shave.

    Hi Geo, I use this shavette on a regular basis (twice a week) but I'm shaving against the grain only, whether it is 2 or 3 passes as i find it easier like that. Is this ok?

  • @afrog2666

    I`ve always wondered, why does one put the handle UPWARDS when using shavettes and straight razors?
    Is it just to see what you`re doing or is it a balance thing too?
    I thought maybe the weight of the handle might press the blade onto the skin or something, but not having tried either style of razor (yet), I thought I`d ask :)

    • @afrog2666
      @afrog2666 5 лет назад

      Is it because the natural rotation of the hand makes it easier to not cut yourself?
      lol, I have no idea, I just thought it looks more comfortable to have the handle down..

    This razor looks incredible, I love safety razors and I want to try a straight razor. Is there a risk of accidently cutting the jugular part of the neck with this razor ? Or is the risk low to almost nonexistent ?

      So I have one more question, I am 16 years old. I have thick chin hair and descent sideburns. I am to the point where I need to shave my chin every day. I don't have money or access to things like the shaving cream and brushes and things that you would use. My parents wouldn't buy any of that. What would you recommend that I do for shaving prep? I have canned shaving cream and a bar of soap. I saw your cold water shaving video. Would shaving with cold water be a good idea for me? With limited resources what should I do?
