After hanging a quick & dirty EFHW antenna from a nearby elm today, I powered up my IC-7300 for the first time and was absolutely entranced with the waterfall display! Best feature since PTT!
Peter, these items are worth mentioning: 1. You can get a display output using a SDR Play via a PTRX board 2. The USB cable is how you get CAT, computer logging, you can send CW or digital signals with it and 3. The QSY by tapping the monitor is a quick double tap. Try that and the rig will qsy quickly to the station you want. As a CW aficionado, you will find the Icom 7610 a superior CW rig with a better receiver than the rig listed in your shack at QRZ.
I love my 7300 so easy to use I didn't bother with the manual I just keep playing around with functions and settings got the hand of it with in a week. Great video
Made my mind up too and I also bought an IC-9700 (10-8-21) which was to be my first purchase. Looking forward to opening the boxes when they arrive. Great video with no BS, just straight honest reporting.
It took me a long time and I was not sure if this would have been a right decision to purchase the Icom IC-7300. For some months, I did not know if I should or should not. Nevertheless, I purchased one this weekend. I listen to this professional and always honest documentaries by watersstanton. I was convinced that my decision is right. The problem was that the product is not available as to the shortage of computer parts. Nevertheless, I got an IC-7300 factory new and for a reasonable price as an Australian delivery by Icom. I get it in about two weeks and we will see how everything goes. Thank you for your excellent documentation of the product especially as there is so much rubbish on social media.
Peter you can connect the 7300 to a display, but it requires the connection of an SDR Play via a PTRX board installed inside the 7300. Works beautifully by all accounts.
I wish to thank you for this video but not just this one. I have been using used gear for quite a lot of my 40 years some good ,some not, some I wish I had kept (TS-850s) I have another 850 on the gurney but it is to the point either it goes for parts or I buy another for parts. In short I want something that is more up to date and although I know several with a 7300 and who all say that they like them, no-one has walked me through the features like you have. With the upcoming solar cycle which well could be my last I am going to order today a brand new Icom 7300 based on price ,yours and my friends recommend. I thank you again for your straight forward explanation of a multitude of topics 73 Jim ve4jim
Thanks for video. I have had my 7300 for about a year and your comments coincide very much with how I feel about the rig. It has a lovely display and is easy and intuitive to use, especially for a non-techy like me. Well done ! De Mike G4RNW
Mni tnx for another great video! Hve had my 7300 less than a yr & it's an amazing rig; however, I realize there's still more I can learn abt it. Seeing ur appreciation for some of its finer points was both interesting & informative! Tnx agn & 73 from TN de WA4ELW
Thank you for that Excellent Review! I truly enjoy your channel as it is very informative. Is 4-meter band the only difference between the European and North American Versions? Are the other specifications the same? Icom has a $100 US rebate on the IC-7300 here stateside right now and I am leaning towards the purchase. The sales price here at one online retailer is such that after the rebate I would have the IC-7300 for under $1000 US. I have never experienced purchasing anything as major as this from across the pond, but if the price and specs were right including shipping I would consider it. Thank you again for not only this review but all of the informative videos that you share with the world of radio. You definitely shed More Light on things in this area. 73 my friend
Excellent video Peter. I have wanted a 7300 since they came out, but haven't yet been able to justify the expense. I am a lot closer now. ;-) It would have been good to have the audio on whilst demonstrating the filter selection though. ;-) 73 de Gordon G8WWD
I have both 7300 & 9700, with decent antennas they are fantastic radios, I'm well covered from 160M to 23Cms, including 4M and rx on 8M... What more would you need...
7300 is a great radio. I would like a kind of keyboard to send RTTY though. Decodes fine but sends only preset messages. With a keyboard attached you could have QSOs without a PC. I need a tuner because on some bands I'm out of 3:1 ratio internal tuner works on. Other than those I love mine.
I do think this is my next radio however coming from radios like the FT 102 and an 840 in the shack, call me old fashioned but using a spectrum to hunt the stations as opposed to a well trained ear,, I’m just not sure if I like the cheating so as to speak, great video though many thanks, regards
thant thing has to wide bandpass filters, there was a video where someone switched a preselecotor before it, the noise level dropped significantly. then the modulation has a problem if not using the original handheld mic, wich doesnt sound as good as a studio mic. i would rather get a yaesu ftdx3000, that costs about same and has a better receiver and better modulation. the waterfalldisplay is a bit slower but compared to the worse receiver and transmitter of the 7300 its the better choice.
@@watersstanton fortunatly NO and after watching those videos with the preselector when the noise level then dropped much, i wouldnt buy that piece of JUNK 7300 either. i dont need to jump out of the window to know it would end deadly.
Q1: If you connect this to your PC, can the PC decode and display CW that is being received? Q2: I have a Yaesu FT-840 with a Yaesu MD-100 desk mic. Can this mic plug in and work on the IC-7300 or do you have to rewire it? Thanks for the nice overview. John
Hi Peter, How would you compare the 7300 to DX-10. I know the Yaesu is a more expensive radio and has features the Icom doesn't but in your opinion, is it worth the extra money. I have an Icom 7100 now and I'm looking to buy a dedicated HF rig. Going with the 7300 would allow me to continue to use my older SM-8 microphone with them. Is the receive that much better in the FT-DX10? Thanks for all your thoughts and informative videos.
Does ojv in your callsign stand for anything? Or just what you were allocated? I'm ojw, M7OJW hopefully soon 2e0ojw, the ojw is my initials Owen John Williams. I'm not Welsh believe it or not, lol
Hi Owen. Back in 1960 there were a selection of callsigns in an exercise book at the Post Office HQ in London. I just picked it for no particular reason!! 73 Peter.
Likewise. I used Icom IC735 at ARRL Field Day 2 years ago but the noise reduction in the 7300 is vastly superior so the 735 is now more of a backup radio.

There are several features there which remind me a lot of the IC-7000

Would u recommend the 7300 over the dx10? I’m considering one of these devices.
In tbe hands of most people the only difference would be the funcionality and that is a personal choice. 73 Peter.

We can configure to use handheld mic's UP and DOWN keys as CW keys.. Or, send texts from PC remotely via USB cable. 73.
