I noticed that after moving to NZ, my cravings for chewing Tobacco stopped fairly quickly. Hint: I couldn’t find any chewing tobacco over there. Tho it seems I was addicted to the stuff, the change in my environment had a huge impact on how I felt about its absence.

Nuanced to a fault. Entertaining a debate on whether food addiction exists or not is just ludicrous

Please help me understand, when you say that "food addiction" occurs in only a small subset of obese people, how do we define "addiction" here? Are we saying that removing these foods among this subset might give them withdrawal symptoms or something? I assumed that most obese people were to some degree "addicted" to particular "binge" foods or to say overeating in general for non-hunger reasons? Thank you.

More plant-based fiber from various sources has made the hyper palatable foods less appealing to me. I think that's for two reasons... Diversity of food sources helps keep the gut microbiome diverse, and you're also more likely to get all the micronutrients with a diverse diet. Sufficient micronutrients and diverse gut microbes help shut off the hunger signals while also providing the right enzymes to break down and synthesize stuff your body needs.
I'm not smart enough to give the details on all of that. However, a lot of the recent research into the gut microbiome seems promising, and it lines up with my personal experience too.
If you're obese and have access to a halfway decent produce market, start prioritizing fruits and veggies, and to a lesser extent, whole grains, legumes, and nuts. Get the processed food out of your house and stop eating out. Cook at home.

How can you distinguish between a food addiction and obesity? How can one person with a given high body fat percentage have a food addiction, and another with the same body fat not have a food addiction? They both theoretically overeat to the same extent right?

When they mention super potent medication are they talking about meds like Orforglipron, ozempic, and wegovy?

I feel as though if it didn't exist 50 years ago, and we had food back then (some of which was sugar laden and used real butter), something else has changed or we just didn't feel the need to recognize it?

Not to the sheer volume or low costs. Also back then they had societal norms/eating patterns (from times of less food availability) that held it off but eventually the food environment nudged the population towards over-consumption. Back then you had coffee at home (if even), now its a drivethru with a lot of sugar and maybe a pastry. Back then, most people made their own lunch or had limited options, now drive thrus. Portion sizes have ballooned so people eating one hamburger/sandwich now are eating many more calories than a single hamburger/sandwich back then etc... etc...

I don't think the food environment needs to change,
anoraxic people have food around them too..
But people's views of food, the behaviours and thoughts need to change.
And that the problem lies no where around them, but by themselves. That they are consuming more food than burning it.
    (from a former obese girl)
I also don't longer think it's food that is addicting, but the way of eating is the addiction.
