Charles it's always great to see others growing Banana's in Southern California. Glad you left this bunch to ripen through the winter. When my banana's crack like some of yours did I just cut the dry part off, eat some and freeze some. Usually they are very ripe and taste great. It was a crazy winter this year as I had 4 trees flower throughout winter and 4 bunches ripen during winter this year. fresh organic banana's in December :)
Charles I do have a better way of taking down the banana's . I used to take my banana's down the same way until one day the branch came back and knocked me off the ladder. Now I have a taller telescoping ladder. I climb up as far as I can and throw a rope through the leaves from the backside of the banana's so the rope hangs down by the main branch of the Banana bunch. I then tie it off like you did with the bunch you hung from your Awning leaving a good amount of rope below to help lower the banana's to the ground after they have been cut. This can be done with by one person or two. you can cut the main stalk while holding the rope then lowering when it is completely free from the tree. It makes it so much easier to take the banana's down and it doesn't ruin any banana's or squash them. I will try to send you a photo next time I harvest a bunch.
Once people taste my banana's they say store bought banana's taste like cardboard and I have to agree with them. I think everyone should try to grow banana's if they have the room to. As always thank you for your insight and sharing with everyone.
Remember banana tree sap stain anything it comes in contact with. When it dries it dries brown

Were these bananas blue? Blue Javas should be blue then turn yellow as they ripen. Huge tree !

Thanks for the helpful info. I'm new at banana trees and I just got my first bunch to start growing! I have been looking for when its appropriate to cut the stem where the heart is to help ripen the existing fruit on the tree. I've seen some videos where it is left on until harvest. I don't want to stress out the tree or risk loosing the fruit.

I harvested ice cream bananas this morning! Central Florida. I first saw the flower in October. Only 7 pounds, but that’s manageable!

Great video Charles! Im in the san fernando valley so not far away. Hoping to get bananas at some point this year. They grew around 8ft or so last year. Dead right on micro climates. My bananas are in full sun and generally start growing in February but early this year due to warm weather. I’m in awe at how thick your stem was and you’re harvest was brilliant. Maybe you can do a vid on fertilizing. Thanks!

Was waiting for the top of the banana to swing down and knock the ladder out from under you. Thankfully you were spared this indignation. Use a notch cut near the base ... 1/3 way ... pole with hook to pull the tree down carefully from the ground.
charles what happens to the soil that was in the hole lol? does the banana push it out of the way or does the soil become the banana corm?

We stay in Gauteng, South Africa, in an area that does not produce bananas. I was so happy when I saw the fruit. The tree's flower developed about 5 rows of bananas. Since then all the little fruit drops off as soon as the flower open up. What do I do now? Do I harvest and let it mature inside? Will that allow the other unformed bananas to not falls off? It's almost winter here already. Today it's 11°C to 21 °C. I saw your video's that says that it taste better on the tree but we would love it to ripen and maybe even have more than 5 rows of bananas.
Hi ! This is my first experience with a flowering banana tree I watched lots of videos but apparently not the right ones I did remove all but one pup and I trimmed the dead leaves in a different video it said to remove pups and dead leaves because it was compromising the mom I did use a fruit tree fertilizer on her she started to flower in July I live in Myrtle beach South Carolina we start to get cold in October so I’m hoping she will do ok she is in full sun no shade , a question for you is after she is done producing bananas do I have to chop her down ? She won’t come back next year like she does normally I’m so confused
Excellent tutorial. I live in Florida. Recently purchased a home that has a cluster of banana plants. Probably about twenty or more stems. Several are abound 10 feet high and have banana clusters growing. The bananas are about 2”. There are also several suckers growing. I’m not sure what to do with them at this time of year (Mid-March). Any help would be appreciated.
i commented on one of your videos awhile back about avacados.. my question is can they be pruned to keep them small and still produce fruit ? and if they can be grown in a green house?.. now i have a new questio.. can you dewarf a banana tree and grow it in a green house? ohh and will they still fruit?

Hi I saw you video on passion fruit I live in New York and I have a purple passion fruit vine growing outside. Sadly the early winter frost got to it. I brought the vine indoors but all the leaves and flowers dropped off all I'm left with is a green stump. Is it possible that it will grow back? because there is still life in the vine stump close to the root.
those are the best banana, at least they look like the one I've had before. You call these Ice cream banana? where do you get the young plants from?
Is there a limit that can grow at one time. Do you have to worry about overcrowding or too many feeding from the "source". Thanks!
How much sun do you get daily. It looks like you're shaded from one side like my yard. I might get 4 hrs direct sun if I'm lucky.
charles what if the fruit is almost 3months,can i remove the sucker,is about 5 sucker around and is almost growing.
Hi i'm attempting to grow a variety of banana's in the alpine regions of the Pacific NW, I doubt the blue java I planted outside is going to flourish enough to produce anything but I thought I would try anyway. I have other potted varieties I will try growing indoors. I have a few pineapple that have survived a year of growth but not enough to fruit so far, they have produced sports which I have transplanted a few days ago.
I wish I had space for one.

I transfered a plant just starting to produce fruit, however during the replanting I tripped backward and the seed brok off. What do I do?
Tip for cutting the rack; you cut on the outside of the stem which causes the stem to snap from the weight. Try cutting next time from the inside of the stem. The stem will kneel for you and with a bit of luck you can jump of the ladder and catch the rack.
Best be with two persons, of course specially when the tack is 60 lbs. Boy, did that one smack down. LOL
What's up Charles! Hey question well questions ha......my bananna plant had begun to fruit unfortunately, we been having some weird freezing weather from snow and all out here in Texas, especially South Texas. And of course my plant stopped fruiting altogether and never developed into mature fruit. Do I still cut down the fruiting parent plant??? It's not dead for the fact that its still green in the trunk and pups are spouting as well. Do I cut it down now even with these cold snaps 39 degrees at night n warming up to about 45- 50 maybe 60 or even 75 then dropping again. Like I said weird weather for us down here ha. Would greatly LOVE a fast reply. And keep up all the awesome work you do to take the time to help, us other O.G. growers learn the ways of organic growing!! Thanks tons!!!

I did an experiment about a year ago where we harvested some bananas before the "cold winter" weeks, and compared them to the ripe fruit we finally enjoyed by May... Ripening "on the vine" was way more delicious that harvesting green immature bananas in the winter (and waiting for them to turn yellow indoors). Hey sir its important to cut the sucker were its leaning inwards thats were the fruit is take out a part and the weight will bring the top part of the plant down

Hey mate ive had bananas since i was around 5 years old, Australia is very kind to them. But yeah you are picking them the hard way that I did when I was young. The best way is to not use a ladder at all as they are death. I just hack into the tree on the side your bunch is on not a full cut down tho just hack half way or less with a few hacks like falling a tree with a ax but you have a knif. Then pull the hole tree down till the fruit is at shoulder hight then you do what the farmers call a hump onto the sholder if you use a bit of foam you also wont end up with as meany black marks. I hope My 20 years of growing and eating these amazing herbs has helped in ease of use!!!
also if you cut the leaves and plant into hand length chunks so its not a big stump laying around "Sounds like a lot of work I know" but it really works out, the plant will root into it within days. it will all be gone in 3 to 4 weeks.

I live in north fla. I have blue java and Mitzi Luca trees. The blue java have fruited , they will only make 3 or4 rows of fruit and then the rest of the blooms seem to fall of and not produce, is this a soil deficiency, possibly , not sure how to proceed, I originally planted them strictly for appearance but would like to have the fruit as well as growing them to maximum Hightower. Any advice is appreciated, sorry it won’t let me upload picture.
I use a long crotch stick to hold the trunk in place; make a cut or two and gently ease the trunk to the ground.
I have maybe six roots of plantains three roots of ice cream and three roots of gross mitchel. They are overgrown with pups. Thanks for the advice of removing pups. I have the space, so I will just expand. I must tell you though, that even with the cluster of pups, I have ten shoots of plantains.
perhaps try cutting from bottom and falling whole stem into other tree etc. that is very dangerous standing on ladder and cutting top

hey Charles how do icecream bananas do in the colder climate, I'm up north about an 1hr from San Francisco.
I am much further north than you in Wa, they dont like the colder climate much. I am currently testing what types will survive this far north.
Now a chunk of that banana would be sweet to have and do a tissue culture propagation.
Hi Charles! I wasn't sure where to ask this question because I can't find the video that prompted my question so I chose your most recent.
I remember seeing a trellis or makeshift pergola in one of your videos, you mentioned building it. I think it was made from those green plastic stakes from the garden center? Can you post a video showing how to do that? Or just throw me some pointers? How many, how to hold it together, and will it hold passion fruit? I was able to root some cuttings and need something to grow them on.

The "old" system did not allow enough space for the fruit to freely hang, requiring more management and care. I hope you get some better ideas after watching. Keep me posted on what you end up doing! The bad news is the passion fruit cuttings I got from my neighbor must have been a failed grafted variety as it turns out it is orange fruit with red seeds, some variety that is generally only good for using as a root stock. I don't think he noticed, it got away from him and now I know why they never eat the fruits next door! 😂
So how many of those pups made it through to be a true banana tree?
Hello Charles, Jason from Boynton Beach, Fl. Banana pseudo stems continuously grow back even when completely severed but what about after harvesting its fruit? Once you harvest a mother plant’s banana bunch and cut her down inches above the ground will she grow back?

Do you have to remove the pups? I think I have 8-10 and one produced fruit but it was a flop. The tree never got taller than me. Are there dwarf bananas trees?
Martin Deanna yes, you should have a maximum of 3 plant at one time. Grandpa, father, son, all others are for your friends.
To get the Mother plant to produce again, after reaping the fruit cut her down to about half.. She will shoot out the middle and produce fruit again .. you can keep doing this over and over after every harvest.

I live in Michigan, and bought a banana plant 3 years ago. I bring it in come winter time, but this year the leaves were bending at the ceiling. My question is can I cut my plant down some kind of way? Also it has a pup, it has not started opening up yet, but the pup started growing this winter, when is a good time to separate it? my plant fell and one of the leaves was bent, I cut it off and stuck it directly into soil. This happened 3 weeks ago and it is still alive.
You should look into getting a dwarf cavendish plant. They're smaller. Not sure if that is the one you currently have. Or maybe get a greenhouse.
There are bananas that are short they get six to eight feet tall you need to check with nurseries to find one
Only a novice allows bananas to ripe on the tree! Doing this will cause the banana skin to burst and open up the fruits to flies and other insects including worms that can lead to food poisoning. The taste of the fruits will also be negatively affected.
The banana bunch should be reaped when the fruits are full enough then hung upside down (not the way you did) If a large jute bag is available, hang the bunch in it and the ripening process will enhance the taste of the fruits.
Next point. You don’t cut the banana tree on the back to bring down the tree when reaping. This will cause the bunch to come down too quickly and damage the fruits. Cut the under side of the tree and the bunch will come down slowly but safely.. Hope this helps when next you have the privilege to reap another bunch of bananas 🍌 I reap a few thousand pounds every month from my 40 acres farm in South America.
Finally, your method of planting is for a small backyard project, not practicable for a big farm scenario.
Your bananas have a lot of cracks. I was told it is due to deficiency in calcium? When should you add agrilime?
Avery S you are correct, Santa Ana winds did not cause the splits! You need to feed the plant from day 1. You do not need to coat banana leaves to protect them, bananas love, love,love the sun! Do not spray banana leaves under any circumstances!
