Cool build. Suggestion from an old carpenter: add some 4" lag screws to your lower ledger that supports your joists. Add them to the ledger to post connection. Keep up the good work.
Notching the ledger into your 6x6 posts would have been the best approach (imho), but since you’re already past that point of the build, I agree with @Thomas-wn7cl’s suggestion to add lag screws (or through bolts).
Excellent job for a first timer, you'll learn a lot and get better with time. My only advice, try not to leave spaces on the plywood below, critters are going to make their way in make a home inside your floor insulation and their incessant scratching will drive you batty. Great progress so far, I can't wait to see the rest.
This ^^ VERY IMPORTANT. I came here just to find someone saying it. Please be careful, do not let any mouse get inside this insulation. It will ruin your thing...

Relax. You are making heartfelt art, the kind of art we all really like already, so, no worries there. Let the camera and your incredible natural environment do all the heavy lifting. I’m guessing there is a lot of quiet time out there, by yourself as well, in the wee hours. You should show that some of that too, if you feel comfortable sharing that. Your excitement is a tonic for the soul. I would wish you good luck but, you’ve already got something thats better that good luck, you have a good plan. Cheers! Thanks for the art!
As someone about to go into college not because I really want to but because i’m getting it for almost free I have a very strong connection with you and this channel. You don't need college to be successful. I'm 24 with no degree and own my house, 3 cars, and a business. No, I'm not a trust fund baby - I just worked diligently while also getting lucky. Good for you for getting that scholarship though! USA sucks in general but there are far worse places to live. Try to keep your head up and see the bright side of things. Just look on the bright side because dwelling on the negative things will only bring you down in life and not on the up. Take care.
I moved to my smallholding a few years ago now, and merrily got to work with my chainsaw for firewood. The farmers next door who are old hands at this and do a lot of forestry noticed the lack of protection and advised in no uncertain terms the need for proper protection, and a first aid kit to hand. They're by no means safety Sallys. As a bonus, the helmet + faceshield + ear protection combo is my go-to for quick protection with other power tools now anyway as it's the most convenient, so it's not like it's only useful for the chainsaw. Brushcutter or anything else involving chips flying towards your face, it just allows you to relax a bit and concentrate on the work. But with that out the way, keep it up! Personally I like the saying "The man who never made a mistake never made anything", and am all for the getting-stuck-in attitude (within reason!).
First video of yours I've seen, and now I've sub'd. As a self-taught woodworker, I love seeing folks, especially your age, diving right in and learning on the fly. Keep up the great work, the determination, and the dedication. You're getting great advice from your viewers, and we're all rooting for you!
Hi Mick! Great job! You can get it dome to win the bet with your mom! You can do it! Oh and thanks for turning down the volume on the chainsaw noises. I appreciate that so much! Good work! Proud of you! Liz
I just discovered your channel and watched all of your videos. Its crazy to think when I turned 18 I almost bought 10 acres on a lake up there in Alaska for 4k back in 2014. I was getting all my stuff together and had saved up all of my money to buy it and go up there in the late spring. God had other plans for me and I ended up meeting my future wife. I wouldn't have had it any other way, but I can't help not thinking what it would have been like. When I saw your channel I was like this is exactly what I have been looking for. I hope you have the best of luck and keep up the good work from -VA Ned
As a guy who has done my fair share of projects during my 66 years, I think you’re doing great! Don’t worry about the video being perfect we all wil be following along!
Love what you're doing and your independence. Take this as a supporter helping you not telling you what to do. Get some leg protection and ear protection for running a saw, ear plugs are find. Im 30 and work daily with saws and trees and your hearing is important, bush living will involve constant use of a saw so protect your assets for years to come. And chaps may seem annoying, but if you slip while cutting and run a saw into your leg, say goodbye to your dreams and hello to the system again. Chaps are the difference between a couple stitches and a prosthetic.
So, it looks like a 12 ft X 16ft floor, excellent, it would be awesome if you can build modular walls, stand them up, and connect them to the floor. Then add rafters, and roofing. Sleeping bag, cot, cookstove, and win the bet with your mom. Your video quality is excellent, good editing, looks like you have some practice! Good luck, nice video, watching to see how you're doing. Thank you for sharing!

Love the moss lined path. You have a good eye for a pleasing look. I have been checking every day since last Sunday. Glad you are deciding to post what works for you and you are concerned with content....EXCELLENT!!
The next time you go to the hardware store buy yourself a "Cats Paw". Which is a nail pulling tool that works really well at pulling nails (causing the least amount of damage to the lumber) even when the nail has been driven completely in place. In my opinion a cat's paw is a must have in every carpenters tool bags. You should also tell your friends not to choke up so high on their framing hammers when they're driving nails. Hold the hammer towards the bottom of the grip. That way you're better utilizing the weight of the hammer head to drive the nail which in turn conserves your arm strength. When you're using 16 penny nails for framing you really need to know how to use your tools correctly. To drive a nail properly remember that as you raise your arm up to strike the nail you should also cock your wrist upwards as far as it will go. As you swing the hammer downward you also flex your wrist downward as the hammer head strikes the head of the nail. Ideally you want your wrist to finish it's downward flex motion the moment your hammer head strikes the head of the nail. If you do it right you'll be able to drive nails all day long and your arm won't get as tired and sore in the process. It's basic physics that makes the hammer do most of the work for you. Not your arm. A golf swing uses much the same principles which causes the ball to fly much farther. Like the old saying goes... "If you work smart you won't have to work so hard". Check out one of your dads cabin build video's in regards to how he drives nails. He understands how to properly use his hammer and it definitely saves him a lot of time and energy doing it the correct way. In closing I'd like to say that I love the idea that there's another Whipple who has a YT channel. Your Dad and Mom are great people and they really know their stuff. I've been watching them both for a long time and I truly admire them. I know you're also going to thrive off the grid. Take care. sincerely, Dean O. :-I
Good for you! My daughter and her boyfriend just build a cabin on our land while living in a tent. They didn't start until fall last year and it was getting really cold in that tent by the time the cabin was ready to live in. We live off grid in the Homer, Alaska area. I posted a video of their beginning process too.
its pretty cool to see all the people sharing advice and wisdom in the comments... a lot of good woodworking tips etc.. love that people want to help in any way they can.
I'm rooting for you, Mick as August 15th is my 70th birthday! I'm going to climb to the top of a mountain and then celebrate! I hope you win your bet and celebrate too with the $500!!! Stay focused and accept any able bodied people who are willing to help you achieve your goal! You can do it! 😁👍
@@mapesdhs597 Not yet! My business delayed us getting away, then the Canada fires smoked us out! Not good to be outdoors hiking when the air quality is near the top of the scale. We're hoping to get away in a day or 2, depending on if the smoke clears.
Struck most by that moss lined path. That was magical! And the fact it’s daylight in the middle of the night and you can and are just working away on the property. And Cornelius is adorbs. Alaska is crazy. I love it. Also love your mom’s challenge/bet. Wishing you luck for that $500! You got this. Especially if you’re willing to advocate for yourself and your goals in the way of asking for and accepting help when needed. No man is an island. And all work is more fun shared. Also, don’t rob your friends of the opportunity to develop their skills and learn along side you and through your process. Lastly, it creates community. Everyone needs community. It’s truly a win/win/win that way.
@@Nov111805 and Dave's brother, Ryan: Black Spruce. Good channel, he helps Dave sometimes on Dave's channel, but he has an amazing cabin build, homestead channel himself. Another Whipple at work! We need more Whipples in this world.
"I get things done when I say I'm gonna get things done" Reminds me of me. Whenever I'm not sure of something when making a plan, I reassure myself that everything is going to work out. When something goes wrong, I always remind myself "I always find a way" because I have. I've always found a way to get what I want, it sometimes just involves a little bit of thinking and learning.
Please remove your rings while working. It is the easiest way to loose or damage a finger. Getting a ring rung on something can literally skinning your finger down to the bone from the ring to the end of your finger.
RN here the first thing I noticed when watching your video. Take them off, secure on a chain and leave in your vehicle when doing site work. Degloving is ugly, painful and life altering. You are doing awesome work, do not let a preventable injury slow you down.
Your videos do NOT have to be perfect. You can just post RAW footage with voice overs. We will watch to support you!! This is the problem with you tube everyone making videos feels the pressure of having a "perfect" video. But, viewers do not care about "perfect" vids. I love watching these cabin builds and dont care about how perfect the video part is. Im interested in the build process and how they decorate their cabins, add solar, water etc. Adding moss to your pathway = you just set yourself apart from ALL Other cabin builders!! great job!! As for furniture for your cabin and kitchen cabinets. There are many you tube channels that paint & stain furniture from Good Will & other charity stores to make it look like Pottery barn and other high end furniture for $25 VS buying new $2000. So look these up. This would make a great video for you to make and save money on furniture. Also, I watch a gentlemen building a small cabin on a lake on yt. He bought a China hutch from a good will for very little. Then used it as a kichen upper & lower cabinet in the kitchen, painted and it looks AMAZING. It looks like it was made for his cabin very interior designer look while still keeping it look like it was always meant to be in his cabin. He did not have to build anything for the kitchen. He screwed in the upper part of the china hutch to the wall and then the base of the hutch he cut out a sink hole and put the small frig in the base. So this is a option for you maybe to save money on kitchen cabnits but, make it look really nice. (I think he had to cut the hutch in half = upper half with glass cabinets and then lower half with wood cabinets. Great video this week. I enjoyed watching this video & your friends helping you. just leaving this with you: DO YOU REALIZE YOU ARE MORE SUCESSFUL RIGHT NOW THEN ALL OF YOUR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION CLASS? You own land and are building your own home right out of high school with cash = no debt. GREAT JOB. keep building your amazing success. take care.
just wanted to add to anyone that in planning on building a small cabin to look into using 2 X 8 walls to add more insulation and to keep the cabin warm in the winter and cooler in the summer. This makes a massive difference in the home temperature. I added an addition on to my home and this 700 qf portion with 2 x 8 walls & extra insulation with a wood stove was always the warmest part of the home even if the wood stove was not running in the winter. Yes this is more expensive but, in the long run you save money. If you look at all the old stone homes in Europe (100+ years old) the builders always used 2 foot walls to keep the home warm in winter/cooler in the summer. They were smart to buid this way.
Welcome to Alaska. Glad to see a young, hard worker joining our great state. If you ever find yourself on the Kenai Peninsula, look us up. We’d be glad to show you around.
5:50 when you use the saw always put it on the longer part and saw from that side not from the side that falls off. Minute detail but it can prevent injury because this way you will saw through whilst the excess parts fall off instead of risking the saw to fall with the piece. Just a little tip 🙌
As someone who's just cleared a very similar trail in the woods, I'll pass on a useful trick we learned with some of those small 1/2" to 3" sapling type trees. If you have a reciprocating saw with a longer (we used a 9") pruning blade, you can cut the roots just under the ground and simply pull those out. We just cut it kind of box shaped around the base and yanked them right out. With that long a blade the dirt doesn't get into the tool itself. Works beautifully and keeps some of those miniature stumps from reaching out and grabbing your shoes as you walk over them. Making awesome progress though man, congrats.
First time I read this through, I thought you meant a chainsaw and I was so confused on how to keep dirt out of the tool. Then I realized you said reciprocating saw and it all made sense. Great tip!
6:42 Never run your saw into the dirt unless you want to dull your chain. Dirt is just super tiny rocks mixed with organic material and will quickly take the edge off all the teeth. A saw dull makes cuts take longer and requires sharpening sooner. Cheers.
I am so excited for you!!!!! Most kids your age are sitting in their parent's spare bedroom bored to tears. Your life story will be rich with adventures!!!
I would say the opposite, those kids arent getting bored to tears, they have so much entertainment they dont even need to ever think about or feel boredom and because of lack of boredom its gonna be hard for them to achieve truly great feats.
Nice Pepe! Yes, I made a broad generalization. I just remembered graduating and just going through the motions that other people wanted me to do. I didn't see my friends doing much different. The student I know who are graduating aren't buying property. They aren't traveling across the continent (with their own money anyway). They aren't building their own anything.
Great to see your cabin build evolving into a group project. Building and sustaining friendships and community is just as important as your cabin. Love your garden path. Very creative idea! Stay safe, God bless!
Just found your channel. I’m 36 and wanted to do this for years. Visited Alaska 5 times and have covered most of the roads in the state. Looked at some land, all under $30k and around 5 acres, just like you. Couldn’t pull the trigger due to family though. But if I had, I feel like this is exactly what I would have been doing. I’ll drop some $$ in your PayPal, just because I know how important it is as you get going, and seeing you stop at nothing to chase that dream of self sufficiency, remote living, and freedom in the last great wilderness.. it just makes me happy to see. Keep going! I’m rooting for you.
Sweet! So glad your friends came to help. I love that you are taking us on your adventure. If there is another way to donate that would be great. We quit PayPal when they changed the rules. Keep at it young man!!!!

Wow, the path is my favorite. Truthfully wasn’t sure you were going to get much done but….wahoo, you did great! Yes, must win that bet with your mom! $500 bucks is a lot when you have zero!
I’m so glad to learn you found a way to have your build site be set back away from the road. I love the moss trim you added to your path. 🙂Cornelius undoubtedly found a special home!

When you are ready to post, we'll be here to watch. Great job on your first home. There's nothing wrong with allowing friends to feel the rush with you. ❤
Great work! 👏🏼⚡️ A tip, if you’ll take it - widen your foot path to double what you think you need! In the winter, when you have to put your shoveled snow somewhere, you’ll be glad you did! And depending on how much snow that area gets, you may want to level it for a plow. Good luck, pup! 🐺
Wonderful!! Love the moss along the walking path too! You have great friends!! Can not wait to see your progress! Way to go Mom!! $$$ motivation doesn't hurt!!
Mick regardless people will worry it is just because they care. Many love your mom and dad and when you start with a good foundation, you are family. You should be proud of yourself your on the right track. That moss path is a good idea stay safe, cool/warm, and blessings.
Cool build. Suggestion from an old carpenter: add some 4" lag screws to your lower ledger that supports your joists. Add them to the ledger to post connection. Keep up the good work.
Was just about to suggest some type of bolt would be a must a lot of weight to be sitting on what look like standard framing nails!
Notching the ledger into your 6x6 posts would have been the best approach (imho), but since you’re already past that point of the build, I agree with @Thomas-wn7cl’s suggestion to add lag screws (or through bolts).

Did you make it atop the mountain? I hope so!!
@@mapesdhs597 Not yet! My business delayed us getting away, then the Canada fires smoked us out! Not good to be outdoors hiking when the air quality is near the top of the scale. We're hoping to get away in a day or 2, depending on if the smoke clears.
@@debbilermond1553 Best wishes! I hope you can make the trip! 8)
@@mapesdhs597 The air is clearing so it's looking up! 😁😉😊
Your pops is a wonderful builder…. I wish I had my dads help and WISDOM! Use his experience and knowledge to be better
I fell in love with your mother a couple of years ago and now I’m falling in love with you ❤️😊
Keep up the great work, your videos are amazing ❤️
I had to smile seeing you and your friends laughing and working together - reminds me of my misspent youth 😊
The moss looks great. I am binge watching your parents videos. Best wishes.
We need t-shirts that say: WHIPPLE GROUPIE! Between Brooke, Dave and Mick......DANG! Love this family!
@@Nov111805 and Dave's brother, Ryan:
Black Spruce. Good channel, he helps Dave sometimes on Dave's channel, but he has an amazing cabin build, homestead channel himself. Another Whipple at work! We need more Whipples in this world.
Mick you have a place in my heart, you amaze me to the nth degree. You hav e much to be proud of!👍
You've come along way since last video!! Congratulations I think you'll win that $500!! Lots of positive energy for you ✨️
"I get things done when I say I'm gonna get things done"
Reminds me of me.
Thought the same thing... I've seen it happen. Rings off or always wear leather gloves.
RN here the first thing I noticed when watching your video. Take them off, secure on a chain and leave in your vehicle when doing site work. Degloving is ugly, painful and life altering. You are doing awesome work, do not let a preventable injury slow you down.
Love that your gorgeous mum bet you couldn’t finish in a set time! Go you 😂! No better stimulation than winning that bet! Loving your videos. 😊
I enjoyed watching this video & your friends helping you.
just leaving this with you:
DO YOU REALIZE YOU ARE MORE SUCESSFUL RIGHT NOW THEN ALL OF YOUR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION CLASS?
Awesome job Mick! Nice friends you've got, getting help is smart, you're on your way to winning $500.00!!!
Take as much time as it needs! Were here to watch your journey, not make you stress about having to upload. Good job on finishing the foundation!
Welcome to Alaska. Glad to see a young, hard worker joining our great state. If you ever find yourself on the Kenai Peninsula, look us up. We’d be glad to show you around.
Great job Mick! You should be very proud of yourself! I don’t know many 18-20 year olds that would take this big step!!
His mom & dad are close by.
Thanks for sharing your adventures. Doing videos and editing is work, too.
Totally agree… inspired
@tpg2020 They might be close by but he is doing this without their help. It’s not like he can just go home to sleep in his childhood bed!

Kids - get out there and ACCOMPLISH something - anything!
I don't know any kids that do that. Maybe I'm lucky.
No, most kids aren't.
I'm so happy you decided to move your cabin back. I think you will be glad you did.
Love the moss lined path & the site you have picked for your cabin. Foundation looks fantastic! Stay awesome Mick!!❤️
So do I 💖
Awesome 💙🫶 best wishes. Totally enjoying your videos. Your mom's, Dad's and uncle's. Thanks so much for sharing. 🙏✌️🇺🇸
Great to see your cabin build evolving into a group project.
Building and sustaining friendships and community is just as important as your cabin.
Love your garden path. Very creative idea!
Stay safe, God bless!
Love your moss lined path. Just beautiful! Glad your letting friends help you too. Thanks an good luck. You can do it.
I've been waiting for you, looks like you've gotten a lot done so far, just by looking at the first couple minutes of the video! Right on!
Nice start to your cabin! I hope you win the bet!
you have your dads speaking pattern and your moms energy. Its fantastic! great content.
I love your path up to your cabin.
But I got a bit worry, when I saw that your first floor was not tight. You might have mouses moving in.
Hardware cloth stapled over the bottom or a really tough spray foam will fix that.
Sweet!
So glad your friends came to help.
I love that you are taking us on your adventure. If there is another way to donate that would be great. We quit PayPal when they changed the rules.
Keep at it young man!!!!
Great job!! Looking good!! Yes, take help while you can, don't want to be behind with fall & winter approaching faster than you think😵💫take care, be safe, win the bet❤
Well your off to a good start. My hat is off to your two friends helping you looks like the mosquitos have backed off a bit. Looking forward to the next video... have fun.....😊
Woohoo, a foundation, go Mick! And totally lmao at the bet with Brooke. My girl, I think you’re gonna lose, perfect incentive though.
🤣❤️👋🇨🇦
Live and learn young Whipple! 🤩 Amazing work!
Doing great man! Keep it up! We’re betting on you!
I think I can speak for a majority of us here when I say, you are living our dream. Keep pushing and learning. Can't wait to see what your future videos behold!
When you are ready to post, we'll be here to watch. Great job on your first home. There's nothing wrong with allowing friends to feel the rush with you. ❤
Speaking as a housebound 24-year old living at home with his parents... there's something appealing and freeing in seeing your homesteading journey.
I feel this, I’m a 21 yo paraplegic in assisted living. Love watching these videos.
Mom !!! Send him $500!! He is doing a greatjob!! Best $500 you will spend on this awesome young lad $$$
Great job! I believe you can win your bet with your mom. Work hard to prove her wrong. Be safe out there.
Wonderful!! Love the moss along the walking path too! You have great friends!! Can not wait to see your progress! Way to go Mom!! $$$ motivation doesn't hurt!!
😅 Do you think that's a "mothers way" of making SURE he gets it DONE in a timely manner.....as in: BEFORE WINTER! Brooke is one smart lady for sure!
Geez I bet Brooke and Dave are so proud of you! Well done buddy and congrats on the new beginnings 👏🤙
Another enjoyable video. You have learned a lot from your parents 😀. Congratulations 🎉 young man. You are doing great 😃👍.
Great beginnings kid! I’ll bet you’ll be happy you documented your progress! Thanks for sharing it with us all! Good work.
great progress. looking forward to watching the next episode when you are ready.
You are very lucky to have an opportunity to do this so young, be grateful and good luck for the future.
From a 73 yr old fart from Northern Minnesota, Looking good dude! 🤠👍
Love this content. I was excited to see you had a new video out. We've missed you Mick. Keep it up.
Nothing like a cabin build series. Good luck! You're on track.
Mick regardless people will worry it is just because they care. Many love your mom and dad and when you start with a good foundation, you are family. Even though we are not related to you, your family makes videos that welcome all of us into your lives. The build is so awesome and cannot wait to see the next video. You should be proud of yourself your on the right track. That moss path is a good idea stay safe, cool/warm, and blessings.
What is his parents channel called?
Mom's: Girl In the Woods
Dad's: Bushradical
You are exact image of your father, and we love it.
Appreciate that you area doing your own thing!
You're doing great, Mick. I am glad you are accepting help as it can be a great experience.
Great start…… your mom and dad will be very proud of you as well as all of us that are watching your progress awesome!!!
You are doing such a great job. I dont know a lot of young people that would take a project like this mostly alone. Be safe and God bless.
