He's 70, he's Billy Cobham, and his body of work speaks for itself. A true icon of his craft. Respect for him was earned decades ago, before most of the morons here were born. God bless you Billy.
Shows to me that Billy is still interested in growing and "searching"-which is what are true artist SHOULD be doing. It's not all thunder and show-off stuff or just repeating what he did decades ago. Billy even played in an acoustic jazz ensemble a few years back as well, so he's still on the creative path..Very nice..Keep it up Billy. Thank you for posting this!
The Mahavishnu Orchestra live recording Between Nothingness and Eternity is one of the most devastatingly jaw dropping examples of power fusion drumming ever. Billy started it. He was the first that brought that level of power AND ridiculous technique to the kit. Folks that have never heard his early work coming into the 70's should definitely check it out. Extraordinary.
'' I met him in 73 '' in DETROIT '' DEC. 30TH . '' MAHAVISHNU "s LAST U.S. original band concert !! '' before every concert he do 250 to 300 sit ups backstage !! just to get READY !! '' Don't need to tell me who the REAL BADD ASS WASS !! '' I SAW THAT SHIT FOR MYSELF !! '' IV'E never seen a crowd reaction like that still to this day '' HE WAS THE TRUE GAME CHANGER '' DEC. 30 TH 1973. MASONIC AUD. DETROIT. MICHIGAN.
I first listened to him on Birds of fire, and this record will never get old. I bought the complete scores of Mahavishnu, and it's not for beginners. 19/8 bars, and changing, with fill around hits in all corners. But before all, I was impressed by the level of improvisation, some scores are quite empty !
This guy is perpetual best mode. Notice he is a right handed person and sets his toms up left-handed (from right to left).... his dexterity is unparalleled..... very few drummers, even the famous ones, especially the famous ones, can't even carry his stick bag. He is in an elite league of elite drummers. My goodness.
He takes you on a musical journey, this is how it's done! Watched a lot of Thomas Lang solos, they are like sports events, left me feeling empty, but this stuff that Cobham does, it's on a whole different level, it's like each drum has a personality or story to tell and Billy connects them into one single entity.
After witnessing Buddy Rich and his orchestra live in London, Ontario back in '86, I thought I'd seen the pinnacle of technical drumming....Then in '87, I saw Billy Cobham perform at the Montreal Jazz Fest, and my mind was totally destroyed. Good Heaven's...speed, precision, funk, groove. Billy delivered everything that night. Thanks for this!!
Anyone that saw the Zappa/Mahavishnu tour in 1973, witnessed one of the most musically intensive concerts of their lives. First, out came McLaughlin & Co., and proceeded to ask for a moment of silent meditation from a crowd that was geared up to hear all about going to Montana, or Dinah-Moe-Humm. However, as tough as Detroit is on opening acts, we gravitated quickly to this new form of assault on our senses. What remains in my memory of ther set was Billy, moving 2 arms & 2 legs as though they were 20 arm & 20 Legs. And FAST ??? Few could rival his hand speed around the kit, and his wrists must be made of iron for doing those tortuous rolls. He could be the poster child for the matched grip technique. Let's not forget the twin bass drums, which he can still manipulate with speed & endurance. And, to really show off in this video, FOUR STICKS ???
I let the drummer in my band talk me into going to Billy Cobham's drum clinic back in the 90's. I wasn't all that interested at the time because i'm a guitar player but i'm so glad I went. Not only was it an amazing performance but he was one of the nicest and most interesting guys i've met. He's a true artist and a great human being.
Masterclass....a lot of people don't know what they're listening to. He goes at least 7 min on double pedal without breaking time. The kit sounds like a baby grand its' so melodious. Did you see the stick catch at the 13 min mark?...pro shxt...
A friend invited me to see Billy Cobham in September '13. I'd never even heard of him, but the experience was amazing. Seeing this video just reinforces how awesome a musician he is.
.....and man. The last concert I went to he stayed and signed autographs for everybody. So did his band mates. They were completely kind and set of the earth people.
Thought he was going to lose rhythm/meter like 17 times when he switched it up musically, but he never does. How? Genius. One of the best drummers ever. Love this guy.
I love that this is scruffy, that he drops his stick, but none of that matters. He doesn't care if he makes mistakes. The whole point is passion and having fun. So inspiring.
So many drum solos are boring, but not this one! This solo is seriously a master class in polyrhythms. I found that to be highly musical, interesting, and was basically a song on the drums. I think Billy just keeps getting better with age. I'm sure 99.9% of the stuff he's doing here is going right over the negative commenter's heads.
This man changed the entire way at which drummers played and viewed the drumset. He was amazing when he 1st hit the scene and he is still amazing in his technique, class and groove.Cobham virtually set the standard for fusion jazz rock.No one influenced more drummers during the fusion era than Billy. And i might add that he still influences pros at every level.
Billy Cobham is a drumming inspiration. He kicks ass! Seen him at a drum clinic when I was twelve years old and he really changed my whole aproach to drumming. Thanks Billy!!
Billy showing why he is the master...text book technique, but most important is that he's playing the drums as a "musical" instrument not just a percussion instrument, and damn can he groove! Look how comfortable he looks sitting at his kit, like sitting down for home cooked dinner.
I could listen to this all day long. It's a spiritual experience for me. Unlike other drummers, who think loud is great, Billy keeps so many grooves going and it is what makes him the best and humblest drummer in world.
That typical Billy's THUNDEROUS sound ... Dennis Chambers is right, nobody plays or sound like him to this day ... He takes me back to basics every time I watch him ... Living LEGEND period ...
Those toms are epic sounding. Very jungle/primal sounding. The bass is too quiet, however. The snare sounds good as well - well matched with the toms. One thing that I love about this solo is that Billy plays for so long (several minutes) on the drums alone, that when he finally does play a cymbal crash it really sounds powerful and catches your attention. Billy is one of the masters. He would be one a Mount Rushmore of Drumming.
Peggy Walton Most drummers will say that is too big a question to answer but definitely one of the all time greats. I would never have heard of Mahavishnu Orchestra if it wasn't for Billy Cobham.
No ones the best there are just too many great drummers to say one is the best but he's definitely one of the best his drumming with Mahavishna orchestra some of the best drumming you'll ever hear
I've been a Billy Cobham fan since the eighties an amazing talent, I actually met Billy here in Nashville during the Summer Lights Festival at a Jazz club called Scats. It was Billy a bass man and keys a great performance. Billy Cobham is truly a drum master and legend. Thank You sharing your talent with us.
Shame on me for not knowing this guy!!! Wow! I don't know if I can even call that a drum solo. He told me a whole story on his kit. A novel. There's going to be some ignorant kids out there that want to see some bombastic lightning fast technique and believe me I like seeing that stuff too. But THIS GUY is an artist. He's transcended that of a drummer. He's a musician and an artist. Bravo!!!!!
I hope the people in the comments here talking trash about a renowned master of the drumset realize what they are doing. There will always be creative individuals who are willing to go against the grain in pursuit of a higher musical goal. By disregarding their contributions to art, you're shutting yourself out, not them.
Billy never ceases to amaze ..Listening to his drumming and the mood he sets in the beginning, automatically transported me to the jungle, then afterwards to an astral plain of drumming perfection..
bilvis48 Yes... primal... the most inherent characteristic of the instrument. That's something I believe is not for the "nay-sayers" on this post to understand. Their understanding and/or abilities are very limited in scope, if they exist at all. Everybody going on about "playing quietly" and "on time" prove their misunderstanding every time they speak on what they know very little about - in music, in art, period.
EXCELLENT!!!! I see a ton of drum videos- explosive new players all over youtube. But I have always had a soft spot in my heart for BC! He has always been an honest musician. Not just a chop guy- and MAN these drums sound AWESOME! Very musical- and I might add, AFRICAN! Thanks for sharing. :-)
Holy shitsticks....this is unbelievable. I'm depressed watching this because I'll never be even close to this good. But at the same time I'm full of admiration for this amazing musician.....what a genius.
I saw Dreams at a college gig in Connecticut. The showow opened with a spotlight on Billy's hands and a snare drum roll...a very long, crescendoing snare drum roll. As a rudimental drummer myself, I was shocked at the sheer quality of that roll, and, of course, then he kept going. WHO IS HAT GUY!! I've seen him with many different groups since then, and he is always Billy Cobham, a great musician, who absolutely is one of the greats, along with Tony, and Jack, and jo Jones, and Max, and Art and Elvin , and Morello and Buddy and the others whom we all revere, a very, very fine musician!
I'm grateful to have seen Billy in 1977. Great to see him still active in his early 70's. In 1977 he used 2 kick drums, and I believe he's doing the same in this vid, though I could be wrong. He is phenomenal! My favorite drummer. Thanks for uploading this!
his mid tom is his bigger. he has twin tips sticks. he barely uses his cymbals. has a relentless double bass. doesn't seem to bust a sweat. he seems to play mostly with his eyes closed. he is 71 and he kicks your ass.
Danimal300zx, well I thought he was 71 like the guy said, 69 means he's probably shit but if he was 71 and he was playing that good then that would be a totally different story.
I´m also a big fan ob Billy work and he is my inspiration for everyday working on drums. To me, that video is great because Billy is great. Billy always looks and sounds great, no matter how good or bad the picture or soundqualitiy is. He is a living legend a he had more success than any musician today with any popshitmusic!!! If someone of theese capitous critic can show that he is better or can make it better, please show us or shut up!! Best
Awesome! This is as good as it gets. Billy is one of the very best, probably the best jazz fusion drummer out there. Went to his clinic at The Blue note in NYC in Sept. 2008....such an inspiration!! Well worth seeing live any chance you have!
I caught him live with the Mahavishnu Orchestra about 1973 at The Free Trade Hall in Manchester, England, and he is without a doubt the best drummer I ever saw
I can't believe I just watched 14 minutes of drum solo and I still want more
That was funny. It says it all!
He's 70, he's Billy Cobham, and his body of work speaks for itself. A true icon of his craft. Respect for him was earned decades ago, before most of the morons here were born. God bless you Billy.
Let the congregation Say Amen...
Amen.
Amen
Why are you calling people watching Billy Cobham Morons? It hadn’t occurred to you that you would then qualify?
@@ambroulard Yes, that was strange ... Out of left field.
the drums sound fantastic.Billy Cobham is a game changer. He raised the bar for all drummers. He still plays wonderfully.Long live the King.

Billy's the best. He pulls beautiful sound out of the drums, and has the strongest sense of groove of anybody!
This man is a world treasure.....
Transcendent mastery of the drumset! OMG! Billy Cobham is so amazing!
I feel it too
I love that this is scruffy, that he drops his stick, but none of that matters. He doesn't care if he makes mistakes. The whole point is passion and having fun. So inspiring.
Masterful, so much facility, yet transcends technicality
Thanks billy...unbelievably he is still underrated
Wonderful performance from a masterful drummer! Thank you very much Billy and Evans!

I love how he made a slip and lost the stick , caught it in air and didn't flinch or miss a beat ! Wow ! I have been his fan more than 35 years ...
Billy is the best drummer ever, saw him live in mid 70s with his own band. What an amazing drummer had an awesome drum set in 70s
Billy is fantastic…those Tama drums are the perfect platform and sound incredible.
He's always been an amazingly fast player, but his press rolls are to die for. This was a great performance. Thanks for the post…whoever you are.
bedlam6666 Glad you enjoyed it!

Grande Billy, il tuo modo di suonare mi ha sempre ispirato dagli anni settanta ad oggi, grazie .

Waww !!!Billy is the king since 50 years !!!
This is drumming like I've never heard or seen before. What a genius
Billy that is amazing, artistic skill of a real drummer , one of the greats of all time, many thanks
I like his continuity. It is not easy to keep playing for that long while keeping a consistent flow going.
Inspiring billy, even after all those years you still seems to have great fun playing. Its a joy to see, take care :)
That kick drum sounds beautiful
That snare is like butter.

You cannot think of One Word by Mahavishnu Orchestra without his drumming. Simply indispensable.

He is a beast!
Love the way his eyes remain closed for most of the performance. That's how you know he's truly into it.
Love the way this guy drums so musical and its not crowded with cymbals
I caught him live with the Mahavishnu Orchestra about 1973 at The Free Trade Hall in Manchester, England, and he is without a doubt the best drummer I ever saw
billy is the chuck norris of drums
thats a cracking comment ... spot on. Those side thrust kicks were flippin pants. Ditto the 4 stick thing
Love chuck Norris _and his art - but BC has ART! And tech . Chops! And art?!?!&$&@

Wow, very clean and refined technique, this guy is GOOD!
Billy Cobham 7/13/74 Rainbow Theater - London, England
He makes the same exact face while drumming in that video.
The drums sound amazing! Great tone!
