TRIP REPORT - Southwest AND Frontier Airlines, St. Louis to Puerto Vallarta

- Good news air travel fans, it's time for another trip report! This was probably one of the oddest travel itineraries I've had. The flight to Puerto Vallarta was SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper out of Kansas City (rather than St. Louis), so we had to make some special arrangements. I ended up flying Southwest since it was cheaper than parking my car there for a week (in fact, it was the first time that I've ever had a plane ticket with a double-digit price tag). My parents are much closer to Kansas City than I am, so they drove.
The video also opens with a crazy 4-minute long music montage with a bunch of time lapses. This was a fun one to edit.

This was the first ever video I watched from you😅 10 years of this channel holy smokes!! And certainly Southwest has changed significantly too
“ duvet covers and sheets are clean for your arrival.” The sticky note wasn’t necessary. 😂
I loved flying on Frontier airlines! However they were small planes but nice planes.
I remember going into that airport on my St. Louis Adventure! Really enjoyed it! And hope you enjoyed your adventure!
STL almost feels like a second home to me. I've been flying out of that airport since I was born. In fact, I'm probably close to 80 round trips at this point. I actually have some TWA stuff from the 90's. I still use a TWA pouch/folder thingy to keep all of my paperwork straight when I fly. Once when I was flying Frontier, the gate agent (who used to work for TWA) gave me a free seat upgrade because she saw me using that old thing!
I flew Frontier from Chicago O'Hare (obviously) and had one of the best experiences of my flights. It. Was. AWESOME! I love Frontier.
As long as i keep seeing your comments im gonna comment lets go blues!
CORRECTION: LETS GO HAWKS!
+BLACKHAWKSVISION You are pretty much the same way as I am. I'm from Chicago as well (go Hawks), and I've flown Frontier many times to Denver, and I've never had a problem with them. Crew is friendly, In-Flight Entertainment is great, seats and legroom for me were good as well.
Um... In-Flight Entertainment on the IFE? I didn't fly Int'l
+BLACKHAWKSVISION They had TVs for every seat on each of the aircraft, that's what I mean.
At the time of this publication Lambert Field is a ghost of itself.
I'm driving down from Jersey to Florida coming up on July first, you're travel videos are getting me pumped up.
At 3:56 southwest is actually using some of those gates since they’ve been growing in STL. It’s amazing
Dude....I had to subscribe. Your joyful, child like excitement (and i DON'T mean that as a bad thing....trust me!) about flying is awesome! Saw your channel for the first time yesterday, and really enjoy watching your videos....:-).
Sad to see so many gates empty. Wife and I flew from Memphis to Seattle via STL on TWA back in the day. I enjoyed both the airport and TWA.
Kansas City is not going through with a new terminal anymore nor renovation at this moment per Mayor Sly James!👏🏾
Great music!!
I’m going out to STL Airport for my birthday this weekend. I go in the terminal gift shops then go out to the cell phone lot by the runways to watch planes takeoff and land.
Honestly I HATE the layout of the Kansas City Airport Terminals, so narrow and so confusing to navigate. And I had to connect there while going to LAX on Southwest as well
The current layout is great IF you live nearby and like getting to the airport at the last minute. You can park a few hundred feet away from your gate and go straight through security. However, if you need to spend any amount of time there or make a connection, the current layout would be terrible.
They really crammed everything though. They don't even have room for restaurants making all of that above the gates level
***** It was built before the airlines embraced the hub-and-spoke system which became the norm after deregulation. KCI was designed with local travelers in mind, not connecting passengers. Many locals still appreciate the simplicity and convenience of it, which is why the city is having such a hard time convincing the citizens to build a contemporary single ground-side terminal connected to air-side concourses. One of the three existing concourses is not in use (but from the look of this video - it looks like Lambert has even more unused concourse space). At KCI, a local traveler can literally arrive curbside 20 minutes before their flight, check their bag with a skycap, and (unless security screening is backed up) they can board the plane with time to spare, *all without having to walk more than about 100 feet*. That was/is the appeal. Plenty of locals still love it, while connecting passengers and the airlines all despise it.
Before the security checkpoints were put into place it probably was a good airport at the time since you can walk from your car to the gate under a minute. But since then KCI is fairly crammed up now
Hampton inn is a medium hotel in between budget hotels and resort hotels. I like Hampton inns a lot also comfort inns and holiday inn express which are other medium hotels.
Southwest is a great airline. I flew with them the first time I went on an airplane and it was a very pleasant experience :)
I'm from Columbia, MO! Where do you parents live?
Jefferson City. It's my hometown.
my first flight borded from gate E24 in St.Louis Airtran
At 31:56 the Miami Air International plane is the same type of plane and same airline that the Miami Heat NBA Team flys on.
I just discovered your channel today and have enjoyed watching 5 of your flight/trip videos so far. Having watched numerous flight trips, you have a refreshing way of filming yours. The one observation I have is that you do not show any food/beverage service....any chance you could? Thanks! I look forward to seeing more of your trips.
31:04-Wow that lady certainly sounded interested in her job! LOL!
Anyway, you do a really good job on these! It's quite impressive! I really do look forward to watching these videos because you do such a good job on them!
I flew Southwest a few months back and I really was quite impressed! It was really nice! I remember I flew with them as a baby and having a really bad experience with them.(This was back in the 90's.)
Once again nice video!

Thanks! To be honest, these are my absolute favorite videos to make. I know a lot more about aviation than I do about elevators or car washes.
It was pretty cool flying Southwest and Frontier back-to-back. The A319 is definitely more comfortable than the 737 as a passenger. I really liked Southwest. Frontier as a company is going through some tough times, but the experience was decent enough.
Also- I have quite a bit of travel booked at the moment. You should be seeing at least 3 more of these before the year is over. Plus, I'll finally have some non-Mexico destinations.
***** Yep! I've done Airtran and Southwest back to back and United and American back to back before. Oh out of curiosity you going to Chicago as one of your non-Mexico destinations?
TheElevatorPlanet No. I actually thought I was going to make a road trip to Chicago this summer, but my plans fell apart :(
I'll get up there some day. Between work, summer classes, and travel, I pretty much have every single day of my summer break taken up by something already.
***** Ah, let me know if you do! I'll still be here.(hopefully.) :)
Anyway yeah I know what you mean! I'm off to college next year so I got a lot of stuff going on myself.....Did you get to any Melia's lately on this trip?
Hey, love your channel! I know I'm probably going to sound silly for not knowing this but how do you do the flight route map in the beginning?
Thanks from the UK!
Fedex in STL was an Airbus A300, and the UPS in MCI was an MD-11 not as they were labeled.
Jacob, do you get irritated when your ears pop or are you used to it?
I get irritated so I wear earmuffs
I flew southwest to New York lagardia back when I was a little boy
Excellent video. I always love watching videos from the Metrolink. I think that's really interesting about the Kansas City Airport. I'm curious, if the main airport is so poorly designed and located so far away from the city, why don't the major airlines just relocate to the downtown airport you showed in the video? Just a thought.
***** It's too small and there is no practical way of expanding it. It was really not designed for the jet age. There is only 1 runway that jets can use. The only jets that use that airport are private jets, corporate jets, or sports charters.
The downtown airport has no terminal building but just hangars and is now mainly used for people just wanting to fly for there planes. Theyre trying to build a new post-9/11 design terminal but tax payers wont approve of it. So were stuck with the shitty terminals now.
Nice video!
My guessing is the SWA plane went somewhere else after KC since it's such a short flight
It went on to Boston. Surprisingly, only about 10-15 people stayed on the plane for the next leg. A lot of people travel from St. Louis to Kansas City and vice-versa for business trips. The flight allows them to come and go in a single day.
When I was about 3 I was at Kansas international and I accadentily set off fire alarms there
Good job. XD.
Runway 1R at Kansas City!
Lets go blues!
I wonder when will you upload a video of you flying from st Louis to London England?
Air Canada flys out of concourse B????? I thought they flew out of A
Puerto Vallarta is my hometown
Great video. MCI looks very interesting, and dare I say, similar to JFK's Terminal 3.
I think the difference is that MCI was actually very functional back in the 70's. It's still pretty convenient now if you appreciate it for what it is. Downside is that the areas behind security feel like prison cells. Usually 3 gates, 2 single-stall bathrooms, and a food cart if you're lucky. Airport security ruined the concept of the airport completely. I understand why they're rebuilding it.
+The Elevator Channel Also, the current layout is bigger than necessary for the airport's activity.
I am going to Austin on Frontier this summer. What are they like?
you as in the elevator channel need to create a video from st.louis to omaha then from omaha to st. louis because it would be cool to see that because i live in omaha and theres lots of things to do in omaha and outside of omaha
Why don't you do an international flight like to Europe on long haul aircraft?
+Ayefune Kodjovi I'm wondering the same thing. I would like to see an international trip report too(not just mexico).
He may not necessarily have the time or interest in going to Europe. There are plenty of videos of European trip reports that you can watch.
I just flew frontier airlines to Orlando
Tarnesha Lloyd how was that? I am doing the same
Ashley Martin it was a great flight I flew out of Chicago O'Hare the cheapest way to go...
Are you going to Mexico with Abuela's voice in Goanimate?
Excellent video! So, which airline had better seat pitch/legroom? I live in Denver, but have read a lot of complaints about Frontier's legroom.
They were fairly similar. Seats were wider on Frontier (Airbus cabins are wider). The seat was a bit more comfy on Southwest. I'd call it a draw. Though I'd pick Southwest without hesitation since I'm not fond of Frontier's new business model.
*****
A lot of people don't like their new business model; they're loosing a lot of money because of it.
What's there new model have not been up to date with frontier?
Pcdrummer They're turning into an ultra-low-cost carrier. In other words, extremely low base fares with lots of optional fees. Less emphasis on Denver and more on other city pairs. Plus additional flying under contract with Apple Vacations to destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean. They're becoming quite similar to Spirit Airlines.
I agree. They even charge for carry on bags and make you buy them in advance. They dont seem to optional for many traveler.
I flew South West June 19th 2014 to Kansas from Indy then msp mall of America I flew them and trans air cause southwest bought them out I live the 717-200s it looks small from the outside but was very spacious with three lavatories it was nicer than the 737-700i was on it was like a sardine can in that aircraft I was buy the front engine
Kansas City Airport is so bad. We flew on SWA, its just awful.
It gets the job done 😬
you said the The sierra madras that means the sierra moms don't you mean sierra montañas meaning the sierra mountains
10:54 that's an airbus a300
I heard those are actually rare by now!
Hey.....what is the name of the opening song right at the beginning introduction where you are headed for the Light rail.......My shazam is not picking the song up......but it's a great melody.....It's not computer generated it it.......cause my music app is not telling me the name of it......Have a great day.
***** I found all the songs from mokhov except the one I was looking for..... I searched it and it is not coming up.....It said...."Sorry No matches found"...........so not sure where he got the song from......there are a bunch of albums so maybe it was part of another song or something.......I found a couple of songs that the elevator channel used tho....but not "Ascend"
Nice! Ever done a road trip video before?
Closest I've really come is the 1000th video special. Also, I traveled with Dieselducy in his Kansas City road trip (I even edited the video). However, I usually end up flying when I travel (probably about 4 times/year). I'm a huge air travel nerd, so that's fine with me :D
I'm more of a road geek, I love traveling by car; I would love to take a road trip to Georgia, Texas, and Washington (the state) someday, I already have my own car!
JoshCraver9000 Believe me, the next time I have to drive somewhere (besides the trip between St. louis and Jefferson City that I make a few times each month), I'll be sure to do a road trip. I actually thought I was going to be making a Chicago road trip this summer, but my plans fell apart :(
I still have some pretty epic travel plans coming up this year, though!
Sweet, can't wait! :)
you flew into mci in kansas city right?
The elevator chanel I like southwest and frontier airlines
How much did you pay for ticket from St. Louis to Puerto vallarta
LIFE IN USA ,LAM HAN! He flew to Kansas City first
I wish Southwest would just a sign seats and be done with it.
Lambert is like a ghost town
Stephen Ammons Agreed
