  • That was a question of many:
How does Taichi affect archery, or does it at all?
In this video I explain my basic personal view and experience, for now just a few major points. There is so much more, but I might cover that in another video.

Great, thank you! Actually this ist how i Draw my 75# Pound bow right now. I learned the Basis of Combat Tai Chi from master Ding in London. It is all about keeping a stabil structure in the Body, Bones, Joints and limbs aligned in correct Angles to resist any force and pressure without Bildung up unnecessary muscle tension. Rooting also means "screwing" or spiraling yourself into the ground to achieve a stabil stance. The Draw of a heavy bow can consist of spiraling movements and If my Bones And Joints do Not Hurt Afterwards, i know i did it correctly, hahaha

Ah, I like that. Hear but you don’t listen, see but you don’t look. Seeing but not looking can be a mantra for instinctive shooting!

Applying my meditation has truly been invaluable. It is teaching me that learning is much harder without single-minded focus. And, ironically, applying what one has learned is most successful using no mind at all.

One of the best explanational videos ever. Having studied some martial arts over the years one thing that I was taught that has always stuck with me is that any weapon/tool that you use should become a living extension of you own body, so I've always tried to keep that in mind when doing archery. I've always wanted to study taichi to have better breathing control as I agree it helps alot in all sorts of applications in life. Totally agree on the monkey mind also, I know personally that when I try to focus on steps in the shot process I don't shoot as well to when my mind is empty and the internal feeling of the shots is completely different to one another.

This definitely applies to hunters as well. I can't say that everyone uses it, but if you watch people like Gill over at HuntPrimitive you can see it. I know that I myself need to be grounded, and move my entire body in concert in order to shoot well, too.
Wonderful video Armin. It's good to experiment.

Amazing video sir. While I have no training in any martial art or taichi (unless owning a crap load of kung fu and samurai films counts haha), I found very quickly when I took archery, how focused I became without even noticing it. My breathing slows, tension eases. Archery for me clears my mind better then anything.

Ok, what's it say that I've been writing a book about a Chinese girl who's a kyudoka (turned elite warrior archer with a Manchu bow), practices Tai Chi, aaaaaaaaanndd this video just happens to pop up? Dude, when it comes to archery know-how, stuff I gotta look into and practice for the sake of describing stuff properly and how it fits, it's like "ok is this guy psychic? He reading my mind from across the sea or something?" lol This is awesome, sir. 'Shoulder, elbow, hand.' Gotta remember that, and that thing about how the whole body moves when one limb moves. Genius.

Its a very interesting point of view.
Especially as a beginner in archery (like me), the whole process is a lot of mind work.
Think about the single steps, concentrate to do them correctly, and to top it all off, exposed to all the external influences.
I think your way have a lot of potential to get it away from the mind, into the body, to form a kind of routine, and have more resources to focus the mind, for the physical body in a highly efficient way.

Basically any martial art taught properly will support everything in your daily life. That's the meaning of the "DŌ" in Japanese Martial Arts. It takes many years of practice though and depending on your sensei you may never acquire such knowledge and abilities as presented in this video for example. I know at least on dōjō, where they only teach the surface instead of what lies beneath it :/
@Armin - would have liked if you don't only talk about Taichi but mention Martial Arts as a whole. Nice insight though. I also improved my drawing and holding technique through Karate - and many more movements I do are influenced by what I learned through my 13+ years of Karate.

The natural balance of the opposite forces of nature; such as pushing the bow while pulling the draw string. The pierced target reveals the inter connectivity of self and nature.

Fa Jing, the reason why more seasoned martial arts practitioners do not look muscular. They don’t go “muscle building”. Instead, they focus & train how to trigger the tendon energy.
Not to say they’re skinny. They just don’t go building more muscle than what they already naturally have.

Hey, interesting video. I think i will try it. I have a question, do you know or have you tried mind trigger in archery? It's like when you draw a bow you can only shoot after a feather touch your mouth or like in chinese archery you can't shoot until arrowhead touches your hand. I'm asking because i have serious target panic and at small range this way works and i wonder what's your opinion about this.

    • @MiaogisTeas

@@MiaogisTeas It's hard to explain for a person that doesn't have it. It's also different for everyone, for some people it's just anchoring too short but in my case it's couple things like: i have hard time to even get close to my anchor and if get there my bow hand unconsciously goes up and realese is horrible. I know it sounds like something made up but it's real
