I know other parts in the soap have been recast previously but this was a mistake.Susan Tully's Michelle had ingrained herself into our memories with her dealings with Dirty Den,Lofty and her family.She didn't even resemble her.You can't expect to get away with that unless your Doctor Who!
This reply is a year late, I know, but I think the whole point of Michelle's first scenes was that they were supposed to leave you guessing who she might be until the moment Sharon calls her by her name. Since the face wasn't recognisable, there had to be a scene "introducing" the character by having someone mention their name. It only made sense to have some ambiguous build-up because it makes the surprise of finding out that it's a character with a history coming back to the show all the better.
Not the worst bit of re-casting I've ever seen. That would either be James Alexandrou turning into James Bye, or Jo Warne turning into Barbara Windsor!!!!!!!
at this rate, they might as well replace every character on the soap with the way this keeps going on I can see it now, you see one version of a character on one shot on an episode, then the next, it's being played by another lol

How can you have the big shocking 'returning character' moment when nobody knows who the hell it's supposed to be.😂 Another example of how little the current creators care about or understand the real audience. Susan Tully is Michelle Fowler and too iconic to be played by anybody else. Out of curiosity did the fans buy/embrace the change? It's so sad when you watch the older episodes and see what the show has become.

how could they even consider replacing susan tully, she was fantastic and beautiful. I know she's not acting anymore, so then don't bring michelle back. in fact most of the characters who returned and/or were recast didn't need to be. I think the only exceptions are mark, peggy and sam
@@franciscondon1902 preach! Michelle hasn't been in the show for 20 years, why should it matter if they recast her or not, especially as the original actress retired from acting. The character still had (and HAS) a lot of mileage left in this soap, so recasting was a necessity. I think people would have better accepted the recast if she was involved in a more juicy storyline (e.g. discussing her son's paternity with Grant!).
Yay, she's back! I think it was definitely right to recast her, if the actress didn't want to return. She'll be a great character, and I can't wait to see what happens to her!
I really like the new Michelle now. Her storyline with Preston was so boring and made her such an irritating character but now that it's over I've started to enjoy her more. Give her a good storyline and she will go far.
There is definitely something going on. The dead voice of a person murdered from the show who was obsessed with George Michael was playing, then less than 12 hours later George Michael died. Considering it takes 6 weeks for an EastEnders script to go into production. The BBC has to okay the copyright and pay royalties before they can play "Last Christmas" from Wham. It shows how BBC government have used predictive programming to cement the hoax death of a popstar into the minds of the British public. So I would say CERN affected.
Sue Tully as an original character so central to the best years of the show it was an incredible mistake to recast such a character.

It doesn't make sense for the viewers when they try and make the footsteps out a taxi look like a BIG scene when the face isn't even recognisable.

If they have a reason to bring them back then they should go for it. Recasting always works best in soap. Though it only works for some characters.
