In an interview shortly after the release, Anne Hathaway said that Ang Lee filmed the final telephone call two different ways, once with her knowing that she was lying about what happened, and once with her telling the story about the tire iron as if it were the truth, and then during editing, Lee spliced parts of the two takes together to make her feelings in the scene seem more ambiguous.

You haven't lived until you see this movie on the big screen in NYC in the West Village. Good thing I was in the back in a dark corner cause the Anne Hathaway back seat breasts scene, I let out a 'Yea Baby' a little TOO loud. And yes, a slow burn, lots of 'Just F@#k Already!' were shouted out 40 minutes in!

Sadly, I strongly suspect that Jack DID get killed in a hate crime the way Ennis pictured - it's just that Lureen's family is very rich and very well-known, which means they would NEVER publicly admit how Jack was killed (because then they'd have to admit WHY he was killed). I think the tire-explosion story is designed to save face and protect their reputation, and Ennis knows this.

🤠 I totally agree. I've never really questioned that part of the story. It's just so obvious to me that Lee had that in mind when the film was shot and edited, so her questioning it sort of threw me for a loop. However, I can understand how some viewers might see it that way today since there is less of a stigma about it than when I grew up in the 60's and 70's. For those of us from that time period, we know without a doubt he died from a hate crime and the phone conversation was a shameful cover story.

100%. Whats scary is it was not that long ago that Matt Shephard died very similarly to Jack- and that was in the 90’s.
I feel after leaving through that time you totally get Anne is making it up.

100%! She was telling the version she was supposed to. Even if there were murmurs in the community, that is their story.
I think maybe younger people don’t realize the stigma that went with being gay in those days. It was not nearly as common to see homosexuality out in public and I imagine very tough to live outwardly as gay.

Anne's cold delivery of what happened to Jack always made me think she knew Jack was engaging in sexual acts with a man and to save face she made up that story. She didn't seem to be crying cuz he was dead but crying because of what she knew and how she feels she has to lie about it.

I think she knew Jack was gay for a while and was OK with it. There are tiny moments in the film (glances, looks, unspoken conversation, etc.) that hint at this. The most obvious example is her father making fun of Jack's lack of manliness at Thanksgiving & her sticking up for him. Also she's a very smart woman, and Jack probably wasn't so covert with all his "trips". She's crying because she lost her husband, the father of her child, and very likely her best friend. Furthermore, she lost him in a way that she can't even speak truthfully about. Not only does it shame her, but it shames Jack posthumously as being gay was clearly an extremely negative thing in that time. Her whimper when Ennis mentions that Brokeback was their spot is her realizing that he was the love of Jack's life, the one who shared his favorite place/memories, and I doubt she wanted to tell him what really happened as it would only traumatize Ennis even more. Better to think the love of your life died in an accident than be brutally murdered. That's just my take, but who knows

I remember watching this with my roommate when I was just out of college. Imagine 2 kids in their early-mid twenties watching this, wiping away tears and sniffling. Then my girlfriend walks in the front door right in the middle of an aggressive makeout scene and is like "WTF are you two watching??" I had to reassure her that I wasn't having a secret love affair with my roommate. lol

Grew up in Texas and when this movie takes place, it really was like that. I grew up in a rural town and a young man was killed in the 70’s when he came out as gay. He was killed on the high school practice baseball field. My cousins uncle killed himself after coming out around 1980, he hid it for so long and couldn’t live with himself anymore, knowing how much he was hated by our whole town. I wasn’t born til 1993 and things have changed so much but the older generation here still has a lot of hate. The younger ones are more open minded!

one thing i wish was added as a quick flashback in the film that the short story mentions is that, ennis’ brother used to bully him and beat him up when he was younger. one day ennis goes to his father and tells him about it and his father’s advice is to use violence back so he stops bullying ennis. ennis eventually does fight back and the bullying from his brother ends after that. i think that bit could’ve added more context as to why ennis reverts to physical violence/confrontation rather than opening up or conversing more. he uses it as an outlet to get things out/expressing his own emotions in an unhealthy way.

I think Jack’s wife probably knew it at least suspected about his true nature for awhile and while probably morally disagreed with it stuck around not only to save embarrassment but also cause he was a good husband and father. I personally believe that he did die from a hate crime. Probably got caught propositioning some guy and those men tracked him down and then killed him. His wife lies probably to protect herself as well as her son from the scrutiny of the community. But she probably realizes when Ennis calls that this is his lover and that’s why she makes sure to tell him about how Brokeback Mountain was important to him. Because she knows he needs to hear that without revealing too much.

I think what happened to Jack is purposely ambiguous. There are a lot of theories but nothing has been officially clarified and I think that's how Ang Lee wanted it to be. Because Ennis didn't really know what happened, only what he was told... he will have to live with that lingering question of whether the story he was told was the truth, or not. We the viewers are also left to wonder.... and so we see the events from his eyes, we're also left with the lingering question that we'll probably never get a real answer to. It makes us connect with his character even deeper, because we can fully understand it.

I tend to be drawn to dialogue, so when I first saw this movie the long silences threw me at first. But by the time they were coming down off the mountain I realized I was imagining internal dialogue for them and it involved me emotionally in their characters so effectively! This movie made me weep a number of times, and the switching of the shirts always seemed as though Jack was holding Innis in his heart, and at the end, Innis is holding Jack in his heart. Also, I think that Jack's death might have been as tragic and banal as his wife described, but Innis' fear was always that something awful would happen to Jack, so I think his fear is the flash we saw. He may always wonder, given the circumstances of Jack's death, if something happened on that isolated road that only he can imagine.

I saw this movie at the theater, in the West Village NYC of all places, and the problem is that at the time the 'giggle factor' the movie created in the culture really down played how serious and how great of a drama this movie is. It was the butt of jokes constantly in late night TV, and sketch comedies went crazy with this movie, as well as the Scary Movie franchise doing its thing. I think Heath was robbed of an Oscar because of the cultural zeitgeist and I'm sure Heath suspected as much. Maybe that why Heath didn't let the Oscars Lampoon the film, which they would have done to their hearts content at the expense of the film and everyone involved, just for a cheap laugh.

Friendly reminder that THIS was the source material:
Jack took the stairs two and two. They seized each other by the shoulders, hugged mightily, squeezing the breath out of each other, saying, son of a bitch, son of a bitch, then, and easily as the right key turns the lock tumblers, their mouths came together, and hard, Jack's big teeth bringing blood, his hat falling to the floor, stub ble rasping, wet saliva welling, and the door opening and Alma looking out for a few seconds at Ennis's straining shoulders and shutting the door again and still they clinched, pressing chest and groin and thigh and leg together, treading on each other's toes until they pulled apart to breathe and Ennis, not big on endearments, said what he said to his horses and daughters, little darlin.

People tried to be like, "Its just a joke." and he said, "Not to me."
We didn't just lose the Joker tied for first with Mark Hamill for best, we lost an ally that understood the assignment from day fucking one. 💔

Black hat / white hat. Early western's bad guys wore black hat. It absorbed the light in black and white film. Villains face was in shadows. While heroes wore white hat, as it also happened reflect light, making heroes face more detailed and well light. In film heroes face popped out while villains face was in shadows. In colored films, it started losing meaning but the terms left. Black hats are evil and white hats are good guys. Like in hackerworld.

The ending always gets me. I tear up every time. This is a beautiful story. I love the musical themes throughout this film.
A couple of things that people may have said in the comments.
Jack was murdered. Some people have a theory the father in law was behind it.
They filmed the Anne and Heath telephone scene where she knew why he was murdered and one where she didn't know the reason he was murdered. Then edited both in.

    Good thing times have changed,
    Love, Matthew Shepard
San Francisco has always been gay friendly.
    Love, Harvey Milk
    Stonewall changed everything.....in a.two.block radius.
In the short story, Ennis definitely got married.
Lets hear it for Ennis going thru more unemployment to go to his daughter's wedding.

Definitely read the eponymous short story by Annie Proulx that the film is based on. It’s even better. The writing is extremely focused and tight, with a unique narrative style perfectly suited to Ennis’ psychology. Cannot more highly recommend.

This is such a fantastic movie. I went to see this in the theater when it came out, and while it hit hard, I was too young to really get some of the underlying meaning to the story. Now, I bawl every time I watch it. It's such a poignant story, and a rather timeless one at that. I'm really glad you decided to watch this. It's easily one of the late, great Heath Ledger's best roles. ❤

Heartbreaking movie (and reaction). This reminds me of James Dean and Giant, his third and last movie. We get to see James Dean turn into the old man he never got to be. Same thing here, with Ledger. This is THE Heath Ledger performance, holy smokes. And everyone else in the movie, too, definitely Jake, Anne, Michelle, Randy Quaid, Linda Cardenelli.... One of the few movies I ever saw in the theatre, going in blind! I asked my date what she wanted to see and she picked this. I had no idea going in what it was about. Was blown away. I was shocked to see that the gay community has mixed feelings about the film. It was DEFINITELY groundbreaking, no question about it. I still think it's one of the most moving films I've ever seen, and definitely one of the most moving love stories I've ever seen. THANKS, SHANELLE!!!!! (PS: Keeping the great Peter Bogdonavich film "Paper Moon" on your radar; a movie that was practically made for Shanelle Riccio! If I had the money, I would sponsor a reaction to it!!!! One day! it's not good for anyone, let alone their children and wife if they continue a relationship that is clearly one sided. It's hard, but it's the best for everyone. Being in a relationship that you don't want to be in won't do good for anyone involved.

Not condoning cheating either, you just have to understand the time period too. Jack and Ennis weren't the only victims of the times, but, by extension, their wives were too. Nothing is ever black and white in these movies. There are always moral grey grounds.

Jack was beaten to death while out cruising. I know love is love, but this movie is about two guys who f----ed up their lives, cheated on their wives. One ends up dead, the other alone forever. ....BTW, I watched the Oscars live, the year Brokeback was up for Best Picture. Jack Nicholson opened the envelope to announce the winner, and looked as stunned as everyone else...."Crash", a garbage movie, won. Everybody knew Brokeback was 100x better, but......Hollywood wasn't ready; can you believe it?
