I was just looking to see if you could use a fiberglass antenna from Australia in the States and this channel came up and I got pulled in. Great to watch a guy that’s so knowledgeable and professional do quality work! I can see why he shipped it to you.
Mike, he has the utmost of confidence in your workmanship. A radio like that, if I was not too concerned about the money in shipping it as well as paying you, I would send to you and be excited to receive back KNOWING it was going to be working 100% as it was designed to and continue to work for years to come. 👍
You can make a very simple impulse noise simulator with a 555 chip to quickly check the effectiveness of a radio's noise blanker. For adjustment Mike's right about using a pulse generator to get the exact adjustments done. I installed a small blanker in a NorCal40A QRP rig a couple of weeks ago and my 555 line noise simulator is what I used to confirm that it was operating correctly. Thanks for sharing Mike...hope the guy down under enjoys his repaired radio!
Mike thanks alot for your educated channel.I been in radios forb25 years as a young tech start .. learning the proper way to do this art is the start with you .222 razorback
I really enjoy looking at your work and wish more could do the work that you do. I am refurbishing a Drake TR 6 and can not believe how some radios are taken care of. Only 601 of these Drakes made and I just got it for myself. Fixed the RX in less than one hour and now for cosmetic work. Again, you are a pleasure to watch. K6LIG.
We had this radio under the Liner badge here in Australia (18 ch). There is a definite shortage of techs in Australia, or at least Melbourne at the moment. There are some cluey techs around, and they may even have experience with SBE radios and the like, however they couldn't be bothered with it and would prefer to stay anonymous. Maybe that's an Australian thing, but I'm sure Mike would understand. Currently trying to solve an SBE problem at the moment, I own several. And if I were to send a radio to Mike, it would be purchased stateside and sent directly. I may have to you up on that one Mike... let's see how the Australian dollar goes.
I'm one of those people that would send you a radio to fix. I have a drake receiver that i would love to get repaired.. I got an Eaton Grundig to replace it.
Good techs are hard to find.....there are hacks all over but when you find a good one you dont care what the cost is...especially when it is one of your favorite rigs!!
Talk about memories! 👍🏻 I remember sending in my SBE 2 in exchange for the 5.. I don't remember what the deal was, but I was always sorry I did it. The 2 IMHO was a much better transceiver. Maybe the 2 was a 23 channel and the 5 was 40 channels. Too long ago to really remember.
Mr Mike,People send you there radio,s from faraway because they see how competente you realy are,I am from holland but i live in Portugal and we have many cb techs here but i prefere send you my radio and pay extra transporte to get my stuff fixed good!keep up the great work you do and thanks for educating other to fix there own stuff!i,ve bought a superstar1700s export N.O.S. and i have changed the caps because of your videos, mabey i still have to send it to you because of the aligmente! Thanks again
Yeah have to agree with this. I have a mint console v and wouldn't trust it with most, and I am particular about the alignment procedure, many techs wouldn't know how to align these properly or may ignore the information given. And after seeing other posts by Mike to do with tube and hybrid chassis, I would seriously consider sending it straight to Mike from ebay since the purchase would be from America anyway.
did you get a mic with it ? I got one for zip and the only thing I didn't get was a mic and to fix it correctly to get it to work I need the SBE mic. I've tried wiring a handful of mics to it with no success . I'll find one one of these days .
Hi I have a question for you I have an spe council two and a sideband er-2 radios what do you recommend for a side band radio with a great audio for distance and local talking since my sbe are old what is a better new radio to get and I am spoiled they do a great job of working let me know please I'm into a.m. and side thank you very much and have a great day
I don't think that there is enough work for a radio tech in Australia (outside of Sydney). The last time I wanted to buy a short wave radio I had to order one from China on Ebay.
Hi Mike and hi to everybody else on channel. I've been watching quite a few of your videos on repairs. I got a radio am interested in getting fixed if you think you'd be able to help me out how should I contact you?
OMG yes I live in charleston I have a 142 GTL that you received seems to be getting worse and worse and the only place that fixes radios 50 miles away and he doesn't want to work on it told me I need to spend some real money and get a new radio I don't think you can beat the receive in a Cobra 142 when it's working right.
Strange ...it seems to have a US power plug on it. We have different plugs here in oz - the pins are on an angle not straight like that one... and 240v as well ?
I can understand why mobile radios are built upside down because of where the speaker usually resides. I don't understand why base stations are built upside down.
In this case I would assume for the RF shielding. The Consoles have a wooden type enclosure, so they decided to put the component side down where it is surrounded by a metal chassis, and put a shallow metal cover over the solder side. And it could be a design thing, if they were firm on putting the channel selector on the right hand side for right handed people, the board would have to go upside down to save extra wiring as the boards in these are the same as in the mobile units. Not sure in the order of priority.
The reason there are Soooo few Radio techs and even Fewer Really Good ones is because The Radio Industry does not share what they have learned to the next Generation or to someone who wants to learn.... I have seen this far too often when a Very Good Radio tech such as one I once knew who I was told the Main Tech Engineer for RCI would not share His knowledge known as Bill Good Bill Good, I would wait for months to have MY RCI serviced when something would go bad or to another Who was an Engineer by trade, but got tired of the Corporate world, and decided to fix Any kind of Radio..... When YOU ask a Tech what They did they would not share what they had fixed or replaced... In the Medical Field that I once worked in, the Medical Field They will teach YOU how to do things, and WHY they did what they did... They are always sharing information always, but not in the Radio Business, most tech act like what they know is TOP Secret, and not to be shared.... I had a Professor once said, if YOU can teach another what YOU know, it only Strengths YOUR knowledge of the information YOU have, Like YOU I wish there were more Techs, and I also like to learn so as to save money.... I Started to learn after I had a Mic Wire re-soldered, I thought "I can do that" and that is when I began to learn a little at a time when I was stopped at some Truck Stop for the night I would break out MY Stuff and learn anything I could.... I have enough Equipment to open up MY Own CB Shop now, but I lack the Knowledge and finding what I want to learn is almost impossible or just not looking in the right places, in any case Mike I like YOUR Videos, I do learn something with each one I watch....
Mike was very proficient at finding the faults in this case, which is good for the hip pocket. But did you notice that they were mostly detected with the initial visual inspection? A half decent tech should be able to detect faults like that. Mike had a straight forward one here, somewhat due to his experience with these radios, he didn't have to muck around with the through pins either (to his delight I would imagine). Of coarse he did take care of the proper alignment.
There are plenty of techs in Australia......they are just to lazy to look....they type in CB repairs into google and all the RUclips repairers show up.........Seriously anyone that fails to support Techs in their own country deserve exactly what they get in charges.....

I'm learning and staying to get test equipment. Started on tube radios.
I would like to see Mike design a CB SSB radio. That ,I would buy in a heart beat.
Mike's time is much more suited for this and the world thanks him for it. It is obvious the man is happy there with his helpful knowledge.

Same thing with my turbo
Wow, I had a Console ll and the Console V.
Wonder what would be a very good Radio to find at a Pawnshop or flea markets
Several customers that send me radios from australia have told me that they haven't found a good reliable shop there.

Hi Mike and hi to everybody else on channel. I've been watching quite a few of your videos on repairs. I got a radio am interested in getting fixed if you think you'd be able to help me out how should I contact you?
We need some in Illinois!

Mike where are you located. I would like to send you a radio for you to restore. Thank you.
I live one state over and can't even get mine in to Mike.
Shakes head at why you would send to the US for repair (must be a groupie) - plenty of excellent techs here in Australia vk2tgr.
Does not appear so.
Mike im from Australia too, i have 5 sbe sidebander ssb radios.
Would you have any 40 switches?
all that shipping means labor of love lol
Strange ...it seems to have a US power plug on it. We have different plugs here in oz - the pins are on an angle not straight like that one... and 240v as well ?
Mmmmmm, well spotted, fake news?! ;)
Correct, I also spied that USA plug top.
What if he uses an adaptor? Perhaps he bought it overseas and never changed the cord
Rely from Australia Im hear my god this guy must have money lol

What about sending it to Dave Jones
why
Why?
Harb's Elecronics Lab sorry maybe not
Never seen one of those radios, they must have missed this small country out when selling those radios.
Galaxy saturn turbo 😂😂😂
I'm interested in being a legit tech...that specializes in real alignments
I have repaired three of the Kodak dental imagers from three different dentists in England. Seems the English cant fix USB cables. Go figure.
All the things you found is why they sent it to you.

Well said mate, plenty of radio techs down here.
When was the last time you where there
I live here
Obviously the radio was serviced previously. Poorly. Maybe the poor chap had enough, ey?
Cheep 😂😂
My sbe is dead quiet with the nb on and squelch off. Love my sbe to death
