- Broken Braces? What to do if a Bracket or Wire Breaks ?
It’s not unusual to sometimes break a wire or bracket when you have braces. There’s nothing to panic about, but you should take action to get your broken braces fixed.
Damaged braces can cause discomfort, cuts and abrasions inside the mouth and, if left unfixed, make your treatment less effective. You may need to do a minor fix yourself before you can can get to the Orthodontist for a proper repair.
How to Protect Your Mouth if Your Braces Broke
A broken wire or moving bracket can be sharp so you may need to take action to protect your mouth before your Orthodontist can see you. Common fixes need tweezers to move the broken brackets to a more comfortable position or nail clippers to trim a sharp wire. Wax should be used to cover up sharp points and protect your mouth.
Read on for how to perform quick fixes for three common types of damaged braces:
Bracket loose (floating) from the tooth but still on the wire
Broken arch wire
Wire protruding from the last bracket
Floating Bracket (A Braces Bracket Came Off)
Brackets are the part of the braces that attach to each tooth with special adhesive. If a bracket dislodges from the tooth but is still on the wire, it can rotate and move along the wire. Contact your Orthodontist to organise a time to have broken brackets reattached to your teeth.
A floating bracket rarely causes as much pain or damage as other breakages, but it can rub on the inside of your mouth. Before visiting your Orthodontist for the repair, you can sterilise a pair of tweezers and use them to slide the bracket along the wire so it sits between two teeth or into the centre of the tooth. Use the tweezers to rotate the bracket so it’s facing the right direction. If the bracket is uncomfortable, cover the surface with some dental wax.

Same thing happened to me and it set me back a month😫 Luckily it moved back pretty fast and I was able to get a thicker lower wire and another powerchain on today. So I'm back on schedule!

I just got my braces on 2 hours ago and if i smile when i stop smiling the laat bracket catches my cheek skin it doeant hurt but is this normal? I domt want it to be unnormal and then later it start cutting me?
I got my braces off. I got them off April 11th, 2022 so a few months ago. It’s July now
@@Stay4life23 I would say it’s normal for a wire or something like that to cut and get stuck because I had it at some point and it went away
@@ItsFrezon its the point on the bracket itself not the actual wire used so maybe its due for chubby cheeks or something it isnt doing it on both sides just one
@@Stay4life23 Well it may do that but you can put some wax on the bracket that’s doing that or if you have brace relief you can put a tiny amount on your cheek where it’s causing the problem
@@ItsFrezon will the wax fall off when i eat or anything? Probably should have asked the dentist more but its a little hard to ask if u cant full speak the language 😅😅

I’m also getting my braces off in about 4 weeks. For me, I will be having both retainers; permanent and clear
@@bassemouria is there an option for only clear retainers? I only want a clear retainer because it’s hard to floss with a permanent retainer
@@TotallyKattt you got to discuss it with your orthodontist to find what better suits you. I personally rather the permanent one because people usually tend not to wear the clear retainer because it’s removable

It was put on quickly the orthodontist I go to the technician is always complaining I broke a bracket mind you they charge me $30 for broken bracket and wires.
Brushing with a regular toothbrush and flossing is not enough. I didn't stop getting cavities until I got the Sonic fusion 2.0 waterpik that brushes the teeth while simultaneously shooting water in and on the teeth at the very same time
