What I like about the Sega CD version is that they play the liscened music during the actual races. I love that.
Really the only good point the Sega-CD version has going for it.
Great comparison. The PS1 version is just buttery smooth and was a tech showpiece for its time but the Sega CD version has a charm of its own and I love the ability to play music while you play. I am glad I have both.
Buttery smooth? XD in what planet? The game looks like its running in an unlocked 60 fps and seems to be pretty inconsistent, theres constant obvious jitter. It looks smooth because its being compared to the sega cd version which is even worse
@@mario4everd This planet. Everything is relative. I am thinking back to when these games were originally released and what was available at the time. Nowadays if some game is not running at 120 fps it is "broken". Smooth framerates are important but I think in that blind pursuit, something was lost in gaming. If it matters to you, I am pretty sure you can run both of these games in an emulator and triple the framerates or more but I prefer playing on original hardware with physical media. To each his own.
@@malcolmar I mostly play on OG hardware when it comes to early 3d consoles. I dont mind low fps or even inconsistent fps. But buttery smooth is not what you call road rash on either system. Road rash was never a series where they prioritized consistent fps on any of the consoles.
@@mario4everd You said it yourself when you compared what they did on the Sega CD with the PS1. Enjoy those games. With retro games taking off like they are it is a great time to be a retro gamer.
It’s a shame they didn’t take advantage of the SCD processing power and just used the SG engine. Imagine if they had and we would have a Road Rash that runs like the vehicle levels of Batman Returns!
I was shocked to find out it existed when I came across it in a Sega CD clearance sale at a Montgomery Ward back in 96. Picked it up then. Shocked again to find out it was loosely based on the 32-bit versions when I got a copy of that a few years from then.
Road Rash was one of the first games on the PS1 for me. The song "Rusty Cage" by Soundgarden is still stuck in my head today. Today I can even play the NTSC version in Germany. That was not possible back then. I love this game.
What's a shame it's that they could have used the hardware of the Sega CD to really improve the gameplay. Hardware scale and rotation etc. But no one wanted to put in the effort.
My youth. Introduced me to so many great Seattle bands.
If I had to guess, the Sega-CD version was done purely as a cash grab. It IS Electronic Arts we're talking about. A version for the Saturn already existed, but because of the licensed CD Audio literally being a selling point of the game, they couldn't very well release a 32X version of it!
Another MCD game that makes no use of the hardware sprite scaling capabilities of the MCD. It could have been so much better.
Very few devs bothered tapping it's true power.
You can check out the 3DO version as well.
The sega cd version is rough, but being able to play the music tracks during races is a big plus. The ps1 is the far superior version though. I do have nostalgia for the sega cd version.
Me contentei com o Jailbreak.
3do, Saturn, PC e PS1... igual o primeiro NFS
I can't tell the difference
Sega CD version would have been better if they used the 12mhz processor in the CD unit for faster / smoother game play but they just got lazy and dont a port of the cartage game.
Don't forget Road Rash: Jailbreak (PS1 vs GBA)
Joguei muito o Road Rash no PC e Nintendo 64 junto coms meus primos, bons tempos!
sadly the sega cd was doomed from the start... all that effort.. all those FMV games and studios they built just to make them and just to make the real music for games. the sega cd had the capability to have FMV cutscenes on the disc, sure.. but regular games? were still held back by the power of the genesis. yeah you got hardware scaling finally with sega cd, but it wasnt enough. i liked a handful of sega cd games i admit, but the SNES won me out. i thought "oh no, i hope the future isnt motion video games.. this sucks!" then i played neo geo a year later and really fell in love. then came N64. mildly impressed. then i saw pc games. never looked back. went back to console by the end of the 360 era. never had a playstation until PS4. then i got a PS5. now i find myself playing more retro games today, even a few sega cd games... and no, not the FMV games lol.
from the looks of the video above, the PS1 would have had games i liked better than on N64. but i chose N64 back then.
Easy win for PS1 here, SCD game is basically the Genesis game with some extras.
Unless you're adding a game to your Sega CD collection I really don't see the point. To give credit to where it's do the Sega CD version does have a better heads up display with bike health and racer health than the Playstation version. Also the Sega CD's cutscenes were grainy but they got the job done. Music muted because of licensed soundtrack? The game features SoundGarden a band I grew up with.
Different games from different eras.
Was this game also released on other platforms (3DO, Saturn)?
Yes, 3DO. Saturn maybe, I'm not sure.
It was on the saturn
Yes. It was released on playstation, PC, saturn and 3do. All of them have some little differences (graphics, musics), but it is essentially the same videogame.
Road rash 3.5
I almost buoght the SegaCD but when i played Sewer Shark i was like what? The F. I sold all my Sega genesis stuff and saved up for a PS1 instead.
The 3DO/32bit version has a good frame rate, obviously. But the physics are really stiff. It doesn’t play very well tbh. The original Mega Drive game engine is quite a wild ride.
But RR3 was programmed by a different company that did the first two games. There was a dispute over payment. So RR3 handles worse than 1 and 2.
There is a hack that came out recently that improves the frame rate in fact. By about 20%. The Mega CD version I felt could have maybe used the faster cpu or scaling tech. But no.
What's the FPS on the sega cd version?
I don't know but it looks worse than the Sega Genesis games 😲
I dunno. I can't count that low!
below 20 fps probably
About 12 frames per second. Probably less or more in different scenes. I've measured the framerate from 1:05 to 1:06 and it was 12 frames in that one second.
@@RiasatSalminSami Jesus that's bad. The gameboy one he posted looked better
Mega Drive
Ps1 all the way. Sega cd port is horrible with minimal improvements from the genesis port.
Es injusto comparar estas 2 versiones.
It’s not a port of the Genesis game in this case… it’s very different
CD version - classic
Sega CD is a mess. A mix of old school graphics and digitized assets that look worse than RR1 and 2.
They then made the same mistake with RR3, but that one at least does not require a whole other hardware to run.
Sega cd version is such a missed opportunity. Does not take any advantages of its hardware at all bar crappy fmv. Megadrive could do this other than the fmv.
altough the ps version looks great, the megadrive/cd games are 10 times more fun to play
No? Hell no? 3DO Road Rash is one of the best games of all time.
What's there to play? It's a slideshow on SCD lol.
PS1 fps are faster
I really never understood what appeal this game has it's boring and silly.
Horrivel em Sega cd, horrivel! É de sangrar os olhos
the sound is the same shit
wasted opportunity on the sega cd version.Could have and should have used the sprite scaling chip.Def cash grab by ea.
