I really appreciate that you dedicated more attention to the figures when the characters pops up, and told a comprehensive story at the same time. This one felt more fresh and original than previous even though it was shorter. I just liked how good you combined these two segments of this format. Great content, Dave!
4:10 recently acquire the nightcrawler figure and damn its a great figure with the 2 extra heads, a sword, extra hand and the BAF, and I was thinking… we don’t see the same on the recent marvel legends figures 😢
I appreciate the huge amount of work you put into these. I didn't really consider it until this video - but the amount of edition and cutaways you have to do is immense. Great series and video!
I'm only five minutes in and this is great! So many voices, lots of jokes, even singing, haha ridiculous mockery, sly things like Cannonball being shown as a "banger" even though it was one of the most maligned figures from the time and afterwards hahah, the long Nightcrawler narration and dialogue, and Professor X's recruitment speech lol, this is all the sort of silliness that makes this channel entirely unique! So far, with some of the recent reviews, they might have been lacking in some of these elements which makes most of the other content on the channel a lot more enjoyable overall and different from every other channel because of all that. I even appreciated the mention of that comic where Spider-Man goes to London which I was just reading again a few weeks or months ago! Nostalgic references, seeing the art compared between the different versions they made of this comic too, I prefer the older stuff for sure, it just really hits the right spot for me and is the perfect combination of campy, colorful, silly, weird. The new style of art is too earnest and serious and ultimately sort of bland, even though it is technically skilled or realistic looking, but what a bore! I want this channel and the content of the videos to be like the old comics and even the old games that were all very colorful, "bonkers", even just plain stupid, but in a way that was so satisfying lol. I'm so glad that the silliness really lasted so long with comics, and when that all stopped and they started to get really serious or too self-aware and then trying to push their new kind of "humor" which wasn't the same at all as the older stuff but was junk like "M.O.D.O.K. Elvis" "huh huh random" garbage. I don't even know what the story is with that, but it all seems like trash to me lol (so I never looked into it any further), even in modern films the jokes seem different from in the past when things were just automatically funny, silly, while being serious, without being "either" serious or pushing "funny", it just had both balanced together naturally, and the humor was built in and part of whatever was going on or the nature of things and not separate or imposed and heavy handed. It just appears the comics really got it right, and what it was about them perhaps was a kind of innocence and a lack of self-awareness. I saw a Mark Ruffalo film called Dark Waters, and its about toxic stuff and weirdly the deformity the toxins caused one person in the film made the person look like the Toxic Avenger in real life, which I thought was pretty weird, since no one actually knew about that I think until much later, but the film manages to take what might be a rather boring story and carry it through just because of Mark Ruffalo's subtle but funny acting. Again, that was a serious movie but I find Mark Ruffalo almost automatically very funny with just the subtlest faces he makes and the interactions going on, laughing a lot, even though the movie brings up serious things and even has a depressing ending, but it managed to entertain me rather than bore me. I've been avoiding Stranger Things, even though I've seen it all except the latest season, but the reason is because people seem to just blindly praise it, because they are desperate, it might just seem a little better than all the boring junk they are exposed to, but they just seem like they like it because there is nothing else or nothing better, because it honestly does feel like a slog, its dreary, nothing is that interesting or exciting, I don't care, I don't like the kids, its just a dull "blah" of an experience, and that continues throughout, with only the briefest moments of the slightest excitement. It could've been so much better. Than the wife of the guy who makes it made her own horror series, and it was very similar in its blandness, boringness, and missed opportunities, like what is hold you people back?! Just make the dang thing exciting throughout! Argh! Even comic books can sometimes get bogged down like that, but now more than ever, it has reached the point where the old ones are so superior in their entertainment value than the new ones, one can compare them side by side and it should be clear that the older ones are stimulating in so many more ways and the new ones, even some video games, just ask for so much patience as these writers demand respect while you watch them "inhale" the fumes lol and you know where the fumes are coming from. I don't know how the good old days are possible to retrieve, but the film "Interceptor" seemed to almost manage to do it. Now people are suggesting I go see a number of things, including the new Top Gun and other stuff, but I'm hesitant, it is very hard to be in the right mood to see most of these things or even approach them. I hope you'll bring up and maybe get a discussion going on Epic H.A.C.K.S. 1/12th scale Skeleton figures as they are moving into 1/12th which is really helpful as something to compete with Mythic Legions and Storm Collectibles (like Golden Axe) to bulk up fantasy collections, and maybe they will also move into other directions and more versatile figures that can be used in lots of different settings. I'd like Hiya and all the companies possible to move into the 1/12th scale so that people can have consistent looking collections even if things are from multiple lines.
So entertaining! Thank you very much, Dave. I particularly loved the voices, humor and personal comments. Thanks also for ruining Nightcrawler's intro by pointing out the big story flaw. 😉 It was fun seeing the classic pages and also the redrawn pages. I watched a lot of your videos but never before a "Told by Toys", I'll have to check those out. Wonder if you did one for West Coast Avengers. If not, that would be my suggestion. If not, I'd say New Warriors. Btw, I saw what you did there. "Banger after banger after banger", and you finish with a pic of Cannonball. Funny! 😄
Thanks, I'll have to check him out! P.S. Ok, I checked him out. Still too expensive for my tastes, and the costume, although close and cool, is not quite right, especially with the collar and the belt.
I own 4 copies of Giant Size X-Men #1 I purchased 2 copies in 1979 for $4 each and the other 2 $15 each in 1986...I have 2 graded at a 8.5 and 1 at 8.0
I actually got the Box set of Giant Size X-Men and that 6, plus other figures I have made the complete team. I had Wolverine, Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Angel, Havok, Polaris, Ice Man, and I could have even added Beast and Professor X! So I could have done a complete X-Men #94 15 years ago! I could actually do this team if I didn't divide them differently.
Forget a Krakoa BAF. Make that a Haslab project, lol. God can you even imagine... It would basically be like an X-Men playset that, I guess, also transforms into a huge monster. The price would be insane though.
Nightcrawler running around instead of teleporting away from the people make sense. Maybe he has a little control of his powers back then and Prof X honed his skills.
Marvel was terrible about portraying other countries right. Even though I never got to Europe I knew they were stuck in the Frankenstein Monster/Victorian era in Marvel comics.
Wait a sec there. I just realized you said quickly in passing you sold *all* your Giant-Size X-Men?! Does that mean all the X-Men that weren't part of the cartoon team are gone, including Nightcrawler and Colossus? If so I'm shocked, I'm shocked I tell ya. 😳
One day I would love to get this book for my father. It’s been a grail for him since he first started reading x-men.
That’d be an amazing present.
What is holding you back from getting it currently?

Thanks so much for the feedback man. I think I’m finally getting the balance just right!
We definitely need a new Banshee
Yes! Been waiting for another “As told by toys,” Dave! 😁
I’ll do them more often!
This was great! Use this video as a baseline for others in the series.
Thanks so much man. This will definitely be my template going forward.
Always enjoy "As told by Toys" segments, Dave. Giant size X-men was X-cellent.

I foresee a Banshee bring released in a 2 pack with a Cyclops. Great video.
For Wolverine you have to use the one from the Hulk 2-pack with the head of the love triangle one
Perfect mix!
