In this video, i get out to camp to test out how well a Coleman lantern lights up the basecamp, in preparation for an overnighter. I also carve a cutting board and grill a beautiful steak for dinner.
    Thank you for watching.

If your camera has interchangeable lenses, you can get a 1.8 or 1.4 aperture lens that lets in more light for night time but your depth of field will be very shallow.(meaning only a half inch of the whole scene will be in focus)

Since you hang the tarp up on the same shelter in the same way.. Why not add some paracord or twine loops and use some snap links?
Almost cut your new pants? Almost cut your femoral artery. Build a sawhorse already.
Batoning....... bushcraft meme..... Try a froe or just saw wood the diameter you need.
Need a few wedges for your cutting board project and a froe..... that is for thin splits like shingles. Cuts the full width. Makes kindling fast too. Try starting with your saw cutting full width, then baton your axe from the middle if those are the tools you have carried with you.
Coleman makes filming dramatic! Dun dun Dah!
Make some torches for your camp. Using lamp oil or cooking oil, torch wicks, and empty soda cans make some torches for the perimeter of your camp. The light draws in the bugs and they singe their little wings off. Can also burn citronella oil if you wish.
Make some mosquito traps too. Cut the top off a 2liter pop bottle. Fill the bottom half with a few inches of sugar water and a pinch of yeast. Put the top back in upside down like a funnel. The mosquitos are attracted to the carbon dioxide given off by the yeast consuming the sugar. Once they enter the bottle the mosquitos can't fly back out by going up and don't know to go down and then up through the funnel. The mozzies drown in the sugar water.

yeah those classic lanterns still do the job on campgrounds if you need ambient light and 1 fill can last from sundown to sunup ,only needs few pumps in between and if you need real fuel to kick that fire going with wet wood ,just splash a little liquid fuel on the wood to start strong... some are even double fuel ,kerosene or gasoline ... that zizzzz whistling was water vapor trap in the hot wood escaping and some pop ...but if it calls you name , run!!! lol ...great video my man ,I likeee!

just a little hack for your fire storage... take a garbage bag with you next time and put that over your wood storage. may not be 100%effective but you will have some dry. love the vid man...serious steam whistles from sap boiling out of that wood Havnt heard that in a long time. it actually triggered some old happy camping memories for me. so thank you for that. also for more reflective light try hanging a taught Mylar blanket on the opposite side of the lanterns.

+Scrambled O........Martin, love your vids, your channel, and your humor. Thanks for taking the time you do to post videos, experiment, teach, learn, etc. BTW.....You should hunt up a couple of good lengths of thick walled bamboo as you can easily make some great camp utensils from it. ( fork, knife, spoon, ladle. spatula, Native American " style" flute perhaps ? ) LOL.....I had to throw that in as I made flutes for about 12 years from Bamboo, all kinds of wood, even PVC. To " cure " the green bamboo, just heat it up slowly with a propane torch ( being careful NOT to heat a section between 2 closed nodes or it'll explode on you )....you can punch a breather hole in the nodes so the steam can escape, then you don't have to worry about it, but just heat slowly until it turns from green to blond, then go a bit further to dry it really good.
Later, and thanks again for such a fantastic channel my friend. ;-)

  • @JapanScott1
    @JapanScott1 7 лет назад

Try setting your lantern outside of the tarp... maybe behind the fire reflector. Because of the high contrast, the side lighting makes for some harsh lighting. However, placing it behind the reflector the lighting will less harsh. Also, I think Coleman sells a reflector for their lanterns that will direct more light towards where you want it.
Oh, and the fork? Do you have a SAK? Carve a 'spatula' and then saw the tines into the flat area. Finally carve the tines down to a point. Presto! A Fork!

Nice video. Love your editing, and cinematography. The lantern worked well for the night shots, and you're right we need more nighttime shooting. So much of camp life takes place after dark, it's certainly a relm that bushcraft videos haven't delved into far enough. I may even be inspired to shoot more at night now! Keep up the good work.

Take that lantern and hang it higher just like you hang a food sack for bears. You can lower it to get it going and raise it to light up a larger area without the heat. I cant see if you have a good branch in your camp to do it with though but it works really well at lighting up a larger area or smaller, your choice. It just depends on how high you hang it.

maybe not bushcraft exclusively but an idea to split for shingles: machete. you can baton it like a knife or "froe" I think it's called. thinner than axe so less splitting due to wedge
