    I’m a retired old school OTR driver. Learning how to drive a rig and the ways of the road from my dad. I remember riding with him and the friendship drivers had. If there was one parked on the side of the road there was about 5 or 6 stopped to help that one driver. We’d even stop for 4 wheeler’s. Now days people could care less and in a big hurry. Lord How the times have changed.

    I bet someone would get fired for doing that today "That was a great, noble thing you did, but it was against company policy to purposely cause an accident" or something similar
    I know. "accident". Sad to say, a lot of these companies these days would find some regulation to hold a "preventable accident" accountable to the driver in the rear.

    • @terri200026
      @terri200026 10 лет назад +18

      Never driven a truck have you Dweebix. It's not gas, its diesel, and diesel engines have little to no compression when you let off the throttle to slow you down. Unlike the gas engine in your car or pickup, which will slow you down, but only if it is not pulling a heavy trailer, in that case all bets are off. That is why compression brakes (Jake Brake) were invented, but even with that they will continue to gain speed without some kind of braking power. Yes road wolf, if all he did was loose air, the trailer would have dynamited first, and the truck shortly after, but most highway trucks of that period only had spring brakes on one axle of the truck, and none on the trailer so only three out of five axles would have been working, and once the air all leaked out of the trailer can, the trailer brakes would have released giving him now one in five axles locked. What most likely happened was his brakes were out of adjustment enough that after a little heating up, they would not hold at all, and there goes a runaway. It will all happen fast, and by the time you start thinking about putting it in the ditch, you are going faster and the more you think about NOT crashing in the ditch and trying to save it, the faster you are going. Have you ever driven down the highway at 30 MPH and looked out the door and thought about stepping out? when you finally decide it's the only way, and you look again, you are now doing 60 MPH. Tough choice to make, and soon you just start thinking about what dying is going to feel like when you loose it over the side. Yes, they should have immediately done what they did; instead of waiting till they were going that fast, but hind sight is always 20/20. Until they thought of it, and then decided to do it, they were really moving, and the more they thought about whether it would work or just kill them both. The guy in back had no choice, it was try it and maybe die, or not try it and surely die. The guy in the front did have a choice, but he chose to take a chance on being killed in the wreck to try and save someone else. That my friends is the mark of a brave person. How do I know all this? I started hauling logs in Alaska in 1974 and have been doing it in Oregon, Washington every day since then. In the early days, I have lost my brakes; I put one in the ditch to stop when I first started driving and did not know that much about brakes and adjustment. I rolled one over to stop when the air lines froze up and I didn't know it until I tried the brakes on a steep down grade, by then it was too late. Ever heard the song Wolf Creek Pass? Yes, that is what it feels like when you step on the brake pedal and nothing happens,

    Unbelievable! I can't believe some one would put out a video like that! I think that was the most stupid Video ever!! What happen to the safety stop before you descend a mountain in a 18 wheeler? I always just tap the air breaks till there empty all the time! It makes it fun coming off a mountain. LMAO

      Well, it was a re-enactment of what happened in Canada, and in those days they didn't have as many rest stops ... or brake check areas ... as they do now ...
