Yes that parking garage is absurd. 60 min. had a piece on the danger of it's placement many years ago. This video shows the danger quite well. I have been on a commercial jet flight that landed at night. I was biting my nails until we were safely on the ground. You pilots, regularly flying into SD, are tops! Stay safe.

The parking garage is such a problem that the first 1,800 feet of the runway is unusable. Someone obviously was on something when it was agreed to build a parking garage there.

Ah yes, that wonderful parking garage. I remember when the builders/developers informed the FAA what they were planning on building and the FAA came back with “we don’t think it’s a good idea to build the garage there”. The builders/developers said thanks but we’re going to build it anyway. The rest is history.

Thanks for posting. One of the most clear video on this subjugate to date. I could see where my family and I went to church. Unfortunately the apartment where we lived at has been replaced with a bigger one. it was an excellent place for plane spotting. One late afternoon I even saw the Super-guppy coming in for a landing. Too bad we didn't have movie camera to film that and other landings as well.

something cool about this approach is that the circular building that planes fly over (at 2:20 in the video) is San Diego's Air and Space Museum, brilliant location planning

And right next to it (in front of it in this video) is the Starlight Bowl where they have plays. When a plane comes in for a landing, the director hits a red light and all the actors freeze. Even if they are in the middle of a sentence they stop there, and when the director gives the green light they pick up right where they left off. They do not go back to the beginning of the sentence. If it is musical and they are in the middle of a song/dance, then the actors keep on going. It is a unique experience.

At 2:06-2:15 the buildings and pool to the right is Balboa Naval Hospital. I’m stationed there rn and live in the barracks. The planes fly past literally every 2-3 minutes 24/7 and they fly so close I can see the bolts on the belly of the plane. It’s constant and it’s so loud that it’s a literal hell.

Almost 20 years ago, I remember driving down, with my family, to the San Diego Zoo for the first time and saw this Southwestern coming down to land on the freeway. Man, I was scared out of my wits. I thought the aircraft was about to crash, and I screamed out loud -- without knowing that I was. That's how close it seemed it was to the freeway!!! My wife hasn't stopped teasing me about it.

I flew on seaport airlines from El centro to San Diego before they went under and got the same view since it was a small Cessna caravan, I was the only passenger on the plane. .. It was a pretty fun $39 flight. Mokulele replaced seaport, but there's no longer flights to San Diego, it now goes to LAX, I did that flight as well and spent the time at LAX watching the big planes land from in-n-out before flying back a few hours later

  • @markpell8979

Looks like a bit of crosswind from the right on this approach but really just another day at the office. Surprisingly perhaps to most folks, the famous parking garage on short final is actually not the critical obstruction when approaching Rwy27. The safe glide path and location of the landing threshold for this 'non-precision' approach procedure is dictated by the hills a little farther east of the airport. All potentially dangerous terrain and other obstructions lie at or below an imaginary sloped surface leading like a ramp to the displaced landing threshold. No worries but still exciting to do and to observe!

    • @San17_

@fxdb2011 the parking garage and the area around needs to go. San diego will have around 10 wide bodies in a day when the new t1 is finished. And did I mention that sometimes san diego uses 09 which takes off towards the garage, and for wide bodies its not safe.

Many years ago when the Navy moved out of Miramar--remember "Top Gun?"--the city had a chance to get that airport. However, the Marines at the base in Orange County moved into Miramar. Our representatives did not seem to have enough guts to have the Marines stay in Orange County. (After all these years, that land in Orange County is just one huge, barren piece of empty land. Orange County cannot decide what to do with it. ) One complaint against Miramar was from the people who live in La Jolla, to the west. They complained that the passenger jets would be too loud. I worked in the Miramar area for 20 years. When our soldiers returned from over seas, they were flown in a jet liner. The jet liners are quieter by far than the military jets. The one advantage is that there is a lot of empty land around Miramar. If the city took over it, you can bet that the land around it would now be filled in with all kinds of development. Interstate 15 which runs through the land would have way worse traffic than it does now.
