Procter and Gamble were also the biggest producers of TV soap operas. The nickname “soap opera” is from the fact that P&G’s biggest products were soap related. The soaps they produced over the years include Guiding Light, Search For Tomorrow, The Edge Of Night, As The World Turns, Another World, Somerset and Texas, among many others. P&G Productions was officially dissolved when their last remaining soap opera, As The World Turns, went off the air in September 2010.
Fantastic video as always! The "Bigger Than You Know" playlist is going to make for a fun binge-watch one day, and make the product world look very small!
And let’s lot forget the television production arm of P&G, which made daytime soap operas like As The World Turns, Guiding Light and Another World. Notice that the shows were generally created as advertising vehicles for their products. Every commercial break would feature ads for a variety of products by P&G. This is actually how these shows got the name “soap operas”.
P&g sponsored those shows not produced them. The products were bought by the housewives (the real one not these bitches from Atlanta) so they paid for the advertising through the shows ...brought to by company man...giving you the business facts
Proctor & Gamble also has an entertainment production company. Originally known as Proctor & Gamble Productions (now Proctor & Gamble Entertainment) they produced (and sponsored) many daytime dramas (soap operas) first on radio, starting in the 1930's and later on television. Many classic soap operas were produced by Proctor & Gamble Productions including: The Guiding Light (1937-56 on radio; 1952-2009 on television) As the World Turns (1956-2010) The Brighter Day (1948-56 on radio; 1954-62 on television) The Edge of Night (1956-84) Search for Tomorrow (1951-86) Another World (1964-99) Somerset (1970-76) Texas (1980-82).
Which is exactly where the term "soap operas" came from. Because, the shows were either sponsored by, or featured commercials advertising cleaning products. They definitely knew their audience, since it was mostly housewives.

They also marketed products to address specific uses: For bar soap, Ivory was the natural option, Camay was a beauty soap, Zest and Safeguard were deoderant soap, and Lava ("with pumice") was a tough hand soap marketed kids and blue collar workers. The company also infamously produced Rely tampons, which were pulled from the market after women died from toxic shock syndrome caused by the product. As someone who watched a number of P&G soaps, most of their commercials in the 60s-80's were very tightly written "stories" that introduced a problem that was solved by a P&G product within 30 seconds. I went to a conference in Cincinnati once. Went sightseeing found P&G headquarters. Huge! Went into the lobby of one of the buildings. Glass display cases on the walls around the entire ground floor each one dedicated to one of their products. It was mindboggling!
My father was the production manager at the Plant in Jackson, TN. They recently sold the plant to Kellogg’s, but they offered to keep every one of their employees at the plant. My father was, in my eyes, very accomplished and he dropped out of college. I wish that one day I can fit in his shoes, and I’m 26
Hi, Company Man. You forgot to mention that Procter & Gamble used to have their own television division which they produced the longtime CBS soap opera, Guiding Light.
Oh man, I remember Guiding Light. My mom used to tape episodes of that on VHS when I was a toddler. It was one of her favorites back in the day. The fact that they’re called soap operas is literally because of P&G is amazing to find out about.
@@jonasthemovie Yes. I am not kidding. Procter & Gamble used to produced the once long time soap opera Guiding Light. Under Procter & Gamble Productions that is. You can tell them by their classic logo from the 1980's at the end of the show.
All of PG's early products involved the use of animal fats. This is no coincidence. Cincinnati had a tremendous excess of animal byproducts due to the booming meatpacking industry in the city at the time. Several other famous food and hygiene brands from hot dogs to shampoos rose from the same part of the city's west end near the giant stockyards and rail-yards. Animal byproducts were and still are used in a multitude of products. The stockyards are gone but the brands remain. This is at least part of the reason why more famous household brands were born in Cincinnati than anywhere else in the world.
This was very informative. After watching the video in full, I realized that almost every single product that you mentioned was a household product in my family's home. I transitioned into a plant based and chemical free lifestyle in the 80's. Thanks for the info.
Proctor & Gamble became massive because they were easily the largest advertiser in the USA. They had huge presence on both radio and TV, and in fact for several decades owned the production for several daytime TV "soap operas." (Indeed, the very name _soap opera_ came from the fact P&G owned the production of these shows outright.) They're still a major advertiser, and if you go to any supermarket, Walmart or Target store, you'll be surprised how many P&G products are on the shelves.
My grandfather was a plant manager for P&G and worked at the plant in Mahoopany PA, he also started running the first line of Luvs diapers, which according to him were supposed to be the premium diaper at the time.
Still a huge company, and you have indeed impressed us with how huge they really are, but it seems they only currently own maybe a quarter of the brands you mentioned, having sold the vast majority. It's seems they're almost more of an investor than a manufacturer (although they also invest in manufacturing facilities, many of which I'm sure they sell when selling the related brand) acquiring smaller companies for 5-10 years then selling at a gain. An incredibly valuable portfolio.
Last semester we had a class on brands like P&G and the teacher was so bad at explaining its history and achievements. You did a great job and kept the video interesting!
I used to work for Unilever which is P&G's largest competitor. They have a lot in common. You would probably be hard pressed to name their products but you definitely have them in your home. But they are in fact bigger than you know.
In China, the TV advertisements of Crest, Pantene, Gillette, Tide, Olay etc are all followed by the P&G logo with their chinese name 宝洁. No idea why they don’t do the same in their ads elsewhere.
It’s probably because they did market research and found that in foreign markets showing the American parent company increased sales while in countries like America it’s better to put on the face of choice. That’s my guess
Once you started mentioning all the brands they owned or own I started going through all my shelves and found them on half of my stuff. Also i couldn't keep up with all the companies you mentioned lol
That was their final food brand to be sold. The peanut butter and jelly business was sold to Smucker's, and the cake business was sold to Pinnacle Foods (Pinnacle now owned by ConAgra).
After taking an intro to marketing class in college, I’ve been fascinated by P&G. I’d love for you to do more financial and business analysis on this company in the future.
Yes, it is the archrival of Unilever. P&G manufactures consumer products like Tide, Mr. Clean, and Ariel laundry detergents, Downy fabric conditioner, Febreze fabric and air freshener (that was marketed in Southeast Asia as Ambi Pur), Safeguard line of germicidal soaps, Head & Shoulders anti-dandruff shampoo, Pantene hair care products (remember their latest ad campaign that has the tagline "Strong is Beautiful"), Old Spice men's personal care products, Secret women's deodorant (remember the tagline: "exposed? keep it Secret"), Vicks VapoRub cold rub and Vicks Formula 44 cough syrup.
It’s funny how each brand leaving the P&G umbrella directly coincides with my memories of their commercial presence dropping off. Just goes to show what a powerful marketing machine the corporation is
Love the video! I didn’t comment on brands I knew were P&G because the store I work at carries nearly all these and at one point I was training to be Accounts Payable. So I saw the invoices I know you couldn’t go in depth about why they chose to spin-off some brands but think it’d make a great part 2. Great work keep it up
Also, in part 2 of the Procter & Gamble video, you should mention the time that they had their television production company called Procter & Gamble Productions. They were best known for their popular soap operas in both television and radio from the likes of Guiding Light and As the World Turns which they both aired on CBS. Heck, they even sponsored their own brands during their soap operas. Too bad that Procter & Gamble shut down their television arm in 2010.
They hit an all time high less than a month ago. Not really worried about short-term corrections like that. In fact I view them as buying opportunities. The PG business is solid and will far more than likely survive a few management issues.
You didn’t mention 2 of the favs in Cincinnati: White Cloud TP & Jergens Lotion. Loved the smell of cooking that lotion when using the Norwood Lateral & I-75. Interesting fact. My sister’s best friend’s dad invented the canister that Pringles come in. His name was Jack Turner. He died a couple of years ago in Las Vegas, where I lived & I attended his funeral & learned that little bit of trivia.
Speaking as a baby boomer, a lot of these older brands were very popular in the 1960's. What stands out for me is that these are known as trusted brands, brands known for good quality. Even with products where the P&G item is not the absolute leader in the market, they are a strong contended known for quality. That says a lot for P&G.
I knew they were huge. I remember back in the 90's when a bunch of jesus fanatics accused Procter and Gamble of being satanic. I remember a big list of brand names they would pass around and post at churces - Procter and Gamble brands that all the jesus fanatics were supposed to boycott...
Hey man, this is probably going to sound weird, but here in Mexico a couple of years ago every head and shoulders ad on the TV ended with the P&G logo for some reason, so... Head and shoulders?
I think we'd be remiss if we didn't bring up a huge part of P&G's legacy portfolio, daytime television serial dramas (aka soap operas). They were a giant force in daytime TV, producing and sponsoring such shows like "Guiding Light", "As The World Turns", "Search for Tomorrow", "Another World", and "The Edge of Night", all of which were television staples from the 50s up til at least the 80s. In fact, the term 'soap opera' came from the fact that P&G sponsored so many daytime dramas.
I worked for them in KC and WV. As a speciality tech I was focused on Dawn Dish Soap. I learned a lot about life and business from my experience with them.
And there was P&G Productions. This goes back to radio in the 1930's when they began to produce (and advertise) daytime dramas, hence the term soap opera. Some shows such as The Guiding Light, went from radio to television. They had over a dozen of these shows.
Of all of those only Glad is not 100% owned by P&G today (as collateral of the Clorox / P&G issue both companies have an 80/20 joint venture to sell Glad-branded products).
Colgate (-Palmolive) has always been on its' own and Axe is Unilever's YOUNG MALE SCENT line of products (P&G tried unsuccessfully w/TAG, now they're trying to use Old Spice's scents to attract part of that audience).
Gillette is owned by Procter & Gamble. Below is a list of other P&G brands to avoid. -Always menstrual hygiene products -Ariel laundry detergent -Bounty paper towels, sold in the United States and Canada -Charmin bathroom tissue and moist towelettes -Crest toothpaste -Clancy's Potato Chips, Stackerz, etc... -Dawn dishwashing -Downy fabric softener and dryer sheets -Fairy washing up liquid -Febreze odor eliminator -Gain laundry detergents, liquid fabric softener, dryer sheets and dish washing liquid -Gillette razors, shaving soap, shaving cream, body wash, shampoo, deodorant and anti-perspirant -Head & Shoulders shampoo -Olay personal and beauty products -Oral-B inter-dental products, such as Oral-B Glide -Pampers & Pampers Kandoo disposable diapers and moist towelettes. The 2014 Financial Report lists Pampers as Procter & Gamble's largest brand.[2] -Pantene haircare products -SK-II beauty products -Tide laundry detergents and products -Vicks cough and cold products
I think the only reason I was familiar with them was because I lived in Cincinnati(where their headquarters is) for like 8 years. Even worked in a factory that packaged their products.
Only P&G brands I know are Head & Shoulders and Pringles, but based on how different those products are, I've always assumed the company was super diverse.

Johnson and Johnson's "a family company" slogan has always struck me as creepy, what about them?
I think you mean SC Johnson
Jchocolate G I believe they may have been renamed because I remember they were called Johnson and Johnson
@@noodles1291 The baby products are Johnson and Johnson, it's always been SC Johnson to my understanding

Well, that's SC Johnson's slogan, but they own Johnson & Johnson. They also own Glade scented spray and other things.
My parents worked and started dating while working at Proctor and Gamble so I've heard this company a ton of times. They even have one of those wooden shipping crates from that company that they used to use to store things
Do Unilever
I'm pretty sure he already did a video on them. If it's not there it may have been taken down...
Don't Koch(bros) Industries own Unilever?
Yeah, I think it would be pretty cool for him to make a video about Unilever because they own a whole lot too.
Christina Cope, no, Unilever is an independent company.

I work at a P&G DC, so I knew all of them off the top of my head, unfortunately. lol
Soap company sponsoring/producing a soap opera?
Lots to brag about here in the Queen City :)

I hope they're very proud of their woke legacy today shown in their f-cking ads.
Johnson & Johnson
Unilever
Church & Dewight
Jason G he already did unilever
You mean SC Johnson
Why did I also think that Unilever was a part of P&G? Strange
Katelyn G No. He really means JNJ.
P&G is allover TV with commercials. I'm pretty sure most people know who they are.
i literally only know them from P&G cruises
Literally just heard of them
Last semester we had a class on brands like P&G and the teacher was so bad at explaining its history and achievements. You did a great job and kept the video interesting!
I used to work for Unilever which is P&G's largest competitor. They have a lot in common. You would probably be hard pressed to name their products but you definitely have them in your home. But they are in fact bigger than you know.
P&G? Do PG&E next! keep up the satisfactory work :)
DO PGE, PORTLAND GENERAL ELECTRIC

Man, 3M and P&G are just CRAZY diversified!
Now that I see some of the brands, it does seem like the ads for those brands have a similar aura to them.
In China, the TV advertisements of Crest, Pantene, Gillette, Tide, Olay etc are all followed by the P&G logo with their chinese name 宝洁. No idea why they don’t do the same in their ads elsewhere.
Same in Turkey too
They sometimes do it in Canada too.
Regla
It’s probably because they did market research and found that in foreign markets showing the American parent company increased sales while in countries like America it’s better to put on the face of choice. That’s my guess
In Germany they always show The Logo P&G and i remember when i was a child there was a commercial die P&G whole
Once you started mentioning all the brands they owned or own I started going through all my shelves and found them on half of my stuff. Also i couldn't keep up with all the companies you mentioned lol
You know, Company Man. As of 2012, Pringles is now owned by Kellogg's.
P&G’s head quarters is in my city!
I first heard about P&G from Pringles...my grandmother said "Isn't that the people that make soap?"...

My mom works at their Mason Campus.
Just goes to show what a powerful marketing machine the corporation is
Crazy stuff... I was applying for an internship with them - the process included researching the company - and even I didn't know ALL of those brands.
I’m happy working in P&G plant just assigned recently I’m enjoying there
Love the video! I didn’t comment on brands I knew were P&G because the store I work at carries nearly all these and at one point I was training to be Accounts Payable. So I saw the invoices
I know you couldn’t go in depth about why they chose to spin-off some brands but think it’d make a great part 2.
I was well aware of most of these brands, back when I grew up the P&G logo was more prominent than it is today.
How did you forget The Art of Shaving? I worked for them for a little over two years, and took great pride in being a part of P&G’s only retail store!
One of the greatest dividend stocks out there!
Second only to that of the Standard Oil Co.
Didn't they become part of XOM?
Agreed Brandon. Fantastic dividend stock.
Their stocks have PLUMETED in the past few months because of major management issues
They hit an all time high less than a month ago. Not really worried about short-term corrections like that. In fact I view them as buying opportunities. The PG business is solid and will far more than likely survive a few management issues.
Johnson & Johnson: bigger than you know
And more evil than you know
You didn’t mention 2 of the favs in Cincinnati: White Cloud TP & Jergens Lotion.
@Jane Hoeweler Its such an amazing opportunity for you to be there at Jack Turner, it’s good you could learn about him too.
How are you today, Jane?
Speaking as a baby boomer, a lot of these older brands were very popular in the 1960's. What stands out for me is that these are known as trusted brands, brands known for good quality. Even with products where the P&G item is not the absolute leader in the market, they are a strong contended known for quality. That says a lot for P&G.
Good ol’ practal and grovel.
I knew they were huge. I remember back in the 90's when a bunch of jesus fanatics accused Procter and Gamble of being satanic. I remember a big list of brand names they would pass around and post at churces - Procter and Gamble brands that all the jesus fanatics were supposed to boycott...

They do display their identity since the 90s.
In Japan, they're doing it since the 80s.

Head & Shoulders was mentioned in the video
Divertido, pensaba el mismo
Best Channel, really unique
And there was P&G Productions. This goes back to radio in the 1930's when they began to produce (and advertise) daytime dramas, hence the term soap opera. Some shows such as The Guiding Light, went from radio to television. They had over a dozen of these shows.
If I am not mistaken, P&G is headquartered here in Ohio
How about Samsonite?
