Amen! Nobody uses wide open 1,2 or 1,8 lenses in broad daylight. I rather have razer sharp primes from 2.0 or 2,5 then from big and bulky 1.2 or 1.8 lenses. Spot on Hugh 👍🏻
This type of analysis is why HB is the greatest of all time for gear reviews. It's not just all positive only fan boy raves. He breaks it down with a product's pros and cons but then always has the realism to say "It's great but you probably don't *need* it" Keep it up sir.
They're getting closer, Sony, to producing a kit that actually appeals to me . These lenses and a somewhat re-designed A7C seem very complimentary to each other. Then again, so would the Sigma I-series. But I just don't get along too well with Sony haptics.
Hugh, thanks for this. I'd planned to mate the 35 f/2.8 to my A7C for walking around downtown, then these dropped and the the 40 gave me pause. Though a small difference, I wasn't sure if I wanted to give up the field of view. The pictures you shared show the 40 will be plenty wide for the types of shots I usually take. Plus the 40 has the added advantage of being slightly faster when the sun starts to set.
how nice it is to see sensible words about a piece of equipment as well as an analyst who actually shoots with it. I was looking for information about the 40mm and the 7c, thank you, I'll buy both
I will buy one for sure, but which one is a real question. Fun fact, maybe this 40 will replace 35 1.8 and 55 1.8. It makes sense as I also own 24 1.4 and I will buy 50 1.2 as a replacement for a very good 50 1.4 (great, but improved af is important for me).
I stumbled upon your videos while researching the Sony 40mm f2.5 and the Sigma I series 35mm f2. I can't quite decide if f2 is more valuable than weather sealing. Regardless, as someone that can turn a 61mp image into a 4mp image, I am a huge supporter of cropping the crap out of it. Thank you for the informative, enlightening, and entertaining videos.
The lens hoods remind me of Leica's old R line of summicrons with how they taper from the focus ring. That and Nikon's 45mm f mount for their FM3A. A bit of a retro throwback on a modern lens.
I'm a bit torn between the 24mm 2.8 vs Sony's 20mm F1.4 lens that's only about $100 more expensive. I'll have to research hard on the differences now that these are out.
Just getting into photography with limited resources. My first budget choice Sony a7ii, I lust for the iii,iv…but that limited my small lens choices. Your 3 year old video popped up on my 40-50mm search along with other photographers. I really enjoy your Phil Jackson zen approach in your presentations. They chose the 40mm. You however didn’t bring that up BUT your 10 to 1 street photos did, 40mm it is.
They’re so good that I’m buying the 40 in a few weeks time, with the £200 cash back that I’ll get after 30 days, and the £100 discount that I’m getting after buying the Sony @7 III (with the kit zoom lens) I bought last weekend. I wanted the @7 IV but the extra cost is to buy that camera is enough to buy a prime lens… the @7 III is still a great camera.
Great review Hugh, and I completely agree with you about the "real world" practicality of these lenses. I have the 40, and am adding the 24. However the cynic in me does wonder if these lenses are the reason that Sony put only one control wheel on the a7c!! Have said that they are a fabulous combination.
to me, the real appeal to sony a7c are the Zeiss loxia lenses, that makes the system a gem ( exept the viewfinder)..... Hey Hugh, how about a review on those one day?
I was researching these lenses a lot for my newly acquired used A9 I bought in order to be able to keep up with my 2.5 year old son. This is the review I was looking for the whole time. All I needed to know for these lenses - I'm eyeing the 40mm one - in order to decide if I will get one for casual walks outside with the little devil. Order placed for the 40mm F2.5 Sony! Thanks Hugh.
I highly appreciate your reviews. Many reviewers, and us viewers in return, tend to get hung on the specs: why should I bother with an f/2.5, I need f/1.8! or f/1.2! But your non-bs take on real life applications is a breath of fresh air that brings (at least me) back to the reason behind a purchase, a packing decision, a photographic choice. I really appreciate these reviews. Thanks.
I got the 40mm f/2.5 and it reminds me of the prime that made me first love with mirrorless cameras, the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7, except that it's much better in every way. I already have the 28mm f/2, so I might skip the 24mm. However, if Sony could make something like a compact 80-90mm f/2.8, that would be absolutely lovely.
@@3BMEP Thanks for the suggestion. That one does look really interesting (along with the 65mm f/2), and yes, it's very tiny! Still, as much as I love Sigma Contemporary lenses (I have 28-70mm f/2.8, fantastic), I feel like the Sony G has such special build, image quality, and aesthetics, and I want to see Sony try a compact telephoto. Also considering the Samyang 75mm f/1.8.
Hello Hugh, Thanks for creating these great video reviews. I love your presentation, style and in-depth insights! I am a Sony enthusiast level photographer and have just purchased the 24mm in this series to go with my A7 iii and A 6300. These lenses are a perfect combination of price/quality for me. (I've tried all three.) Thanks again for you great work!
I'm viewing this video more than 2 years after it was made. Still relevant. I think the last point about the compact a7C series is important, since pairing a high quality small lens with a high quality small body makes a great combination. And I believe having the aperture ring on the lens (to use your words) covers up a lot of ergonomic issues in Sony body design. On a side note, I with the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 had an aperture ring for the same reason.
Just watched Gerald Undone quick review. The 24 does seem very distorted. I know you can correct this in photo - but video it may be a bit undesirable.
Excellent breakdown. I'm currently a Nikon shooter and while I love the images I get I am continually frustrated by the shots I miss due to the clunky AF and the size of the lenses and bodies is a few inches and ounces more that prevent me from carrying my camera in all environments. For these reasons I am heavily considering an A7C with a set of these primes.
I am very happy with sony's new release. These lightweight lenses will be ideal for street photography. Yes, these are slow/ f2.5 but I keep myself reminding that sony bodies are capable of delivering usable images up to iso 8000. These lens should be usable for street photography at night. All I have to do is manage fund for these :)
Would someone please explain the utility of a "focus lock button." Keep the camera in AF-C mode and take you thumb off the AF-ON button instead. Isn't that the same?
Looking at the Sony 40 of the sigma 65. Lean is towards the Sigma for the extra reach. In this post covid world it’s hard to get up close on the streets.
3:08 took me a while to figure out that was a lens hood, thought you had it mounted on backwards. You have a gift, as a great presenter, thanks for your insights.
Hugh, thank you for bringing these to my attention! 40mm is my current preferred focal length as I am rocking a 27mm pancake on my Fuji XT1... But if they are small enough I could switch to a sony alpha 7 used and this 40mm 2.5!
Yeah, great review. It’s ok to go with the trio when you’re new to Sony but when you already have : FE4-5.6/28-60, FE1.8/20G, FE1.8/35, FE1.8/85, FE4/24-105G OSS and FE1.8/135GM for a7C and a7R IV ! I’m asking myself : oh nice lenses but should I replace one I already own or ??? They are good to carry with the a7c but are they necessary for taking better pictures? For me, NO. Oh, I’ve also the Ricoh GRIII as an “always with me” camera.
I am looking about for a good CU lens for my FX3. The lenses you're discussing don't hit that note, but I would love to know what lens you're using for this video as the resolution looks fabulous. I gather you cannot disclose it. Oy...
Excellent review as always. Your content is a pleasure to watch. Thank you. I bought the 50mm G 2.8 for my a7c and a7SIII but returned and decided that I needed the 24 instead.
@@ECDPhotographyno, never bought a second one. I’ve pretty much settled in with my Sony 20-70 f4, Sony pz16-35 f4, Sony 20mm 1.8 and Sony 35mm 1.8. Those lenses are pretty much all I need.
You had me at the picture of Miles. Actually, before that. Edit: Your summary of the apertures associated with various use cases is what sets you apart.
Hi, if you would have to choose one of them for travel/street/some portraits, would you choose the 40mm? is it not too "tight"? or would you go for sony 35mm 1.8 FE? I am only thinking about the size between these two lenses here.... the 35mm is a bit bigger and heavier.
I’d actually choose the 40. More FOV than a 50, but a bit less distorted up close than the 35 - and the incremental speed advantage for me is offset by the 40’s size and weight. But both are great lenses.
Another "if only this wasn't E-mount" moment.. they really have so many nice lenses now but I just can't see myself switching over to Sony land. Hopefully this'll be the start of more love for 40mms though - something without the steppy, hunty autofocus and impractically small focus rings of many pancakes, but not the size of a Sigma Art self defense tool. You know how much I love that Batis 40mm, too.. ah.
I mean when you get down to it, the mirrorless aps-c/m4thirds cameras became so popular due to their more portable size right? Not the actual sensor or any other technological reason. So now full frame is getting to be the same size thanks to the Sony a7c, and the even more overlooked sigma fp. In fact one could easily say that this new smaller sony lineup was a direct result of the recently released sigma L lineup. Which were more than likely inspired by, and geared towards the likes of the Sigma Fp, aka, the smallest full frame digital camera on the market. Either way I love the competition and what it ends up doing for us, the consumers. I can only guess these are the beginnings of a trend that will continue to evolve? "At least one can only hope"
@@hellolau when I finally had the chance to head to my local camera store, I had intended on getting an A7C but they had one A7 IV left in, so I picked that up alongside the 20mm 1.8. I did end up ordering the 50mm 2.5G that night and love the image quality and compact size. I still plan on getting that 24mm 2.8 when I get some extra money.
I doubt it. That 55mm is amazing. I own it and honestly nothing like Zeiss. I also own the batis 40mm and 85mm. With that said i like the way the Sony is made with aperture control on the lens
Great video as always. I am just curious how many thoughts I need to hold. I take your inquiries very serious and have been holding your thoughts for many years now. :-) I love how your videos always look just right, lightning, skin colors etc
I guess if you are already in the Sony system, these make sense and are appealing. But the final images, cost of the lenses and cost of the Sony cameras, etc make nothing about these make me want to switch from Fujifilm or anything I didn't have years ago (other than maybe focus speed) on Pentax years ago
These lenses make the sony system a lot more appealing. Full frame sensor with what look like M43 size and reasonable price. I've never been really into Sony cameras, but this could change things.
Hugh, love your videos. My Sony A7IV just arrived. I l love a light easy going setup. Interested in your thoughts between the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 vs a 3 lens setup of the Sony ultra compact 24MM and 40MM in this video and maybe the Sony FE 85 F1.8 G Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.
We bought the Tamron 28-75/2.8 G2 for our video work (less focus breathing; no need to change lenses). But for photography of the kind we do, I’d go the three prime lens route.
I feel like I'm going to get the 40 G and wait for the possible vaporware 35-40 1.8/2 G, only to give in years later and get a 35 GM a week before 1.8/2 G is released XD. OTOH, this is basically the perfect daily carry with an α7 C/C II and is what seems to be the answer from Sony to all the fans of the rx1 series. Not an event photographer, so while the GM is remarkably small and performant for what it is... still feels a little rich for my blood? The only reason I want f1.8/2 for this kind of package is that to my knowledge there isn't an easy solution for bad lighting that is both portable and not distracting other than faster glass... which itself starts to become a problem as you climb to 1.4/1.2/0.95 territory. I find that usually if I stick to f1.8/2 I can stay below 6400 ISO, and those lenses (well, at this point, only the 20 G on the Sony platform but also perhaps the 35 and 50 1.8 S lenses) tend not to make me hate carrying my camera around. I guess the only upside to the current lineup is that with a few exceptions products released later in development cycles tend to be better, and if a 35 or 40 f1.8/2 G lens is released in 5-10 years maybe Sony will have developed yet another innovative optical technology to make lenses smaller. Perhaps we'd see a 300g specimen bearing all the optical pedigree of their current GM line, which... might even be worth the wait.
Coming from a Leica M6 and a 35mm Summilux these Lenses finally sealed the deal for me to go digital again. I imagine combining them with a Fullframe Rangefinder-Style body from Sony to be the perfect setup for street, vacations etc. Thank you for this thoughtful little Video. Your take on Photography really sets your videos apart from the rest. Take care
First video of yours I've seen and wow, great video!! In your experience, which performs better; these new Sony lenses or Sigma's own "I" series for the 35mm vs 40mm? I'm looking at getting something compact specifically for street photography.
They are optically comparable. I give the edge to the i series for feel in hand, build quality, maybe CA correction; weight; consistent filter size to the Sonys. Maybe. You can be VERY happy in the real world from either set; they are both VERY attractive to me personally. I’d say the 40 is the most interest lens among the Sonys for street to me personally; 65 among the Sigmas.
The Sony primes are more expensive, are slower and have less character than the 35mm 1.4 or just about any Fujifilm lens. Sony doesn't make one camera that would attract a true enthusiast who cares about the Art of Photography, not the Speed.
You're right about everything and the lenses are great (love the aperture rings), but anyway Sony full frame bodies are still too expensive for any hobbyist or street photography needs. I got an A7II and can't see any path to upgrade. A7III and A7C are too expensive for non-professional needs, and shame that A7C lacks some physical controls that has some smaller cameras. Now i'm a bit disappointed that I've switched to FF (love full frame bokeh, but probably it's overkill for me). Many crop cameras are good enough these days. And they're even smaller and lighter.
Boy, you can sure get inside one's head Hugh. Little G's, 24 and 50 sitting on my desk and another A7RIV arriving Monday. But, I will tell you what sold it for me, was watching you full screen 4K with that little 50 wide open. You are of course mesmerizing and why your eyes are not bloodshot I will never know. SONY has ambassadors, but I think they should develop a new classification for you ... SONY Spirit Guide. Blessings to you and yours at 3BMEP.
40 is the one we need for Sony A7, golden rule: only 50mm one should have is either 50f1.2 or 50f1.8, 24mm should go for 24mmf1.4 and lots of people have 24mm from the zoom collection, therefore 40mm is the only Sony made 40mm to enhance the lenses collection
Many thanks for this video. Because I was about to sell my kidney. There's a perfect scenario for purchasing these lens. If you happen to get A7C kit, you just selling a kit lens, adding a little bit $ and buying 50 2.5))
I don’t. At this point, the camera for all of my personal work is an SL2, and for video we use the Tamron 28-75/2.8 G2 on our a7 IV and call it a day. 😊🖖🏻
I bought the 50/2.5 with my own hard cash to go with our newly purchased a7S III. Odd combo, right? Not so much; hold that thought for an upcoming video!
With mft 25 1.4 you are smaller and less expensive. And I don’t think that the image quality is much better with the Sony 🤫 Thank you for the great video 🙂
Our friends at Nikon can’t release those 28 & 40mm compact primes soon enough. Would love f/2, to rekindle my love affair with the 35mm f/2D from long ago. This 50mm macro has been hanging out in the shadows of the planned lens lineup. Looks like it could be small-ish as well, hmmm. Sony is not for me, for reasons that are less objective than subjective-but I like where there lenses have been going.
AF is transitive. It's always on something, and how it performs depends on what that is and of course on the user and the body, so please, no more AF generalisations. I can show you a case where an A9's AF is worse than the CDAF-only Panasonic G9 and the Nikon D500.
Before I press "play" i am thinking, i want to hear one honest opinion from a white man about the 47mm F1.25 chromatic focus breathing lens for $2,000.00

You know how much I love that Batis 40mm, too.. ah.
There's an autofocus enabled adapter to allow you to use Sony E lenses on Nikon Z cameras now, while not perfect it might be viable for you.
Mmm. , tempting. Maybe if Sony make a A9C....
intriguing concept
I'm thinking about snagging an a7c along with the 24mm 2.8 for vlogging and that 40mm or 50mm for street and everyday shooting.
Sounds like a plan!
What did you end up getting ?
@@hellolau when I finally had the chance to head to my local camera store, I had intended on getting an A7C but they had one A7 IV left in, so I picked that up alongside the 20mm 1.8. I did end up ordering the 50mm 2.5G that night and love the image quality and compact size. I still plan on getting that 24mm 2.8 when I get some extra money.
Is the sony 50mm 2.5 better than the Zeiss 55mm 1.8?
I doubt it. That 55mm is amazing. I own it and honestly nothing like Zeiss. I also own the batis 40mm and 85mm. With that said i like the way the Sony is made with aperture control on the lens
These pictures ....Just fab.Proper street lenses.The weight,compact....save the 1.2 or below for nighttime....and a tripod,or a mono..ha!
Great video as always. I am just curious how many thoughts I need to hold. I take your inquiries very serious and have been holding your thoughts for many years now. :-)
I love how your videos always look just right, lightning, skin colors etc
😜😊🖖🏻
Always rich in content and props for the choice of music.
Great street shots. I was in that Park last weekend...
Interested in your thoughts between the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 vs a 3 lens setup of the Sony ultra compact 24MM and 40MM in this video and maybe the Sony FE 85 F1.8 G
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.
We bought the Tamron 28-75/2.8 G2 for our video work (less focus breathing; no need to change lenses). But for photography of the kind we do, I’d go the three prime lens route.
@@3BMEP Thanks for the helpful input. Much appreciated.
Take care
Thank you. Enjoy your new kit!
Thank you sir!
@@3BMEP Thanks!

I have the Sony 24, 40 and Sigma 65mm + A7C in my travel pack. Glad to hear that we’re on the same track.
Thanks for your videos, it's really helpful! How do these primes stack up to the new Tamron 28-75 g2?
Tamron just as sharp as a practical matter with much better controlled focus breathing. Review coming.
@@3BMEP Thank you for the fast reply! Looking forward to the review!
I love your reviews .... and ....... your photography. Thanks for sharing .... cheers, mate
Thanks Hugh!
Oh goodness. Fujifilm had better hurry with that 33/1.4 WR.
Not really. Not until Sony make a compelling alternative to the x pro.
The Sony primes are more expensive, are slower and have less character than the 35mm 1.4 or just about any Fujifilm lens. Sony doesn't make one camera that would attract a true enthusiast who cares about the Art of Photography, not the Speed.
Thanks for this Hugh. I enjoy your videos a lot. I feel like there's a 40mm in my future.
Interesting to me that most of the shots here were done with the 40!
Ah, thank you. The reveal at 2:40 in.
Ergo just some of the reasons Fujifilm is doing so well. 😊

How much i wish the 50mm is a f2 or faster. Fuji’s 35mm is f1.4 (full frame 52.5mm f2.1) and its tiny
And backpacking friendly!
👍🏻💯
Wow amazing explanation. You are a rare one.

@Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions...Which lens hood are you using with the 40mm f/2.5 at 3:10 in the video?
I don’t. At this point, the camera for all of my personal work is an SL2, and for video we use the Tamron 28-75/2.8 G2 on our a7 IV and call it a day. 😊🖖🏻
@@3BMEP Which lens hood is the one showing at 3:10 in the video?
@@kalas73 the one that comes with the lens out of the box.
Superb video and thoughts / Ulf
Not 100% sure you mentioned but what would you pick between this 50mm f2.5 G and a Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8?
I bought the 50/2.5 with my own hard cash to go with our newly purchased a7S III. Odd combo, right? Not so much; hold that thought for an upcoming video!
With mft 25 1.4 you are smaller and less expensive. And I don’t think that the image quality is much better with the Sony 🤫
Thank you for the great video 🙂
Always love your vidoes, but lately your contrast has looked very flat .
Constantly trying new things...
Great informative video

Our friends at Nikon can’t release those 28 & 40mm compact primes soon enough. Would love f/2, to rekindle my love affair with the 35mm f/2D from long ago. This 50mm macro has been hanging out in the shadows of the planned lens lineup. Looks like it could be small-ish as well, hmmm.
Sony is not for me, for reasons that are less objective than subjective-but I like where there lenses have been going.
Not long ago, new lenses in these focal lengths at faster max apertures from major manufacturers would be in the $100 range. $600 for these is crazy.
They were never 100. Maybe 250-300 but never 100. I sold camera equipment. Plus these are way better lenses and have aperture changes on the lens
Yes, but can you leave in the desert for a year, stumble across it and stick it back on the camera?
🤔hmmm...

Is the 50 1.8 FE Sony so much worse?
Mechanically, yes.
24mm distortion... not for me !

Finally
AF is transitive. It's always on something, and how it performs depends on what that is and of course on the user and the body, so please, no more AF generalisations.
I can show you a case where an A9's AF is worse than the CDAF-only Panasonic G9 and the Nikon D500.
Not expensive, hmmm... 🤔
They just killed the tamron 2.8 lenses
Before I press "play" i am thinking, i want to hear one honest opinion from a white man about the 47mm F1.25 chromatic focus breathing lens for $2,000.00
