I think you should start a series called "Quick Take:" or something similar. That way you feel free to make the quicker videos different, and the viewers know when they click on a video without that title, they're still going to get the extreme detail 100% of the time. Both preserves the brand and gives you freedom.
I really appreciate how fast he get down to business. 5-second hook, 4-second theme song, 4 second non-sequitur, and then straight onto the topic. Just long enough to get my attention and to adjust my thinking mode for Gerald Undone absorption. He does not waste my time. It's respect for the audience.
I really like this style actually. You are still doing in depth work, but you are so good at this that the difference between scripted and un-scripted isn't that much, IMHO.
I agree with you, Jack. I watch Gerald's reviews all the time and didn't notice big difference. Maybe it's because he has solid workflow and this is applied to everything he does.
I moved away from full frame years ago because lugging a DSLR and the glass was killing my back. I moved back to FF because mirrorless cameras are so much smaller these days... and with glass like these lenses I'm a happy camper once more. Happy with your alternative presentation style too 😁
I have a lot more respect for reviewers and your reviews in particular after watching MKBHDs iPhone hour long review. I understand the pressure of feeling the need to release a video at the lift of the embargo. I think this video and these style of videos have more than enough information and I’d love to see more similar videos in the future! However, I don’t want the pressure from these videos affect the depth of a classic Undone video.
Gerald, YOUR loose style works because you have a wonderful grounding and mental process going into it. You start from a highly professional spot, so when you "relax," it is still quite good. Like most the rest here, I enjoy what you have to say and how you say it.
I personally love to hear your thoughts regardless of if you have time to a "full review" or not! Even in these shorter(lol at a 15min video being short) videos you offer a great perspective on things! Maybe to help people understand which type of video you are able to do, you could implement a system similar to MKBHD and do a something similar to his "first impressions" videos, which are somewhat understood by the public to be less of a deep dive than his "full review" videos. Just some thoughts! LOVE your content! Can't overstate how much you've taught me!
Apologizing for his video format when he could fart into the mic and it still be 10x better than most film channels is peak Canadian energy and I love it.
Did you find the contrast a bit low between f1.8 and f2.5 on the 35mm f1.8 FE? That's the biggest weakness on that lens. I have the Sony G 40mm f2.5, which is sharp and contrasty from wide open. It offers a punch that the 35 mm lacks. I have decided to keep the 40 instead of the 35.
It really needs a side by side comparison to 40mm. I am not convinced the 35mm F1.8 is sharper by any means. He might be coming at from using it more as a video lens than a photo lens. Sure the F1.8 is faster, but it is not very sharp for its first two stops
I once yelled fire so loud I woke up all 3 apartments in my building. The reviews I received for my performance were short and they expressed gratitude. I didn't press for details because my voice was out of commission. With this example I commend your short form review.
I like the conversational style...I like your other videos the way they are done, but I appreciate being able to see your thinking instead of just your super smartness...both are helpful!
Mate, you're probably the best RUclipsr here right now for Sony E mount camera and lens reviews. No fluff, no click-baiting bull crap and honest, solid reviews with great comparisons and great examples of the strengths and weaknesses of each lens you come across. You're the first and also the last person I go to when I want to know about something. Whatever your choices wrt your vids, I'll be here for them. :) :)
I absolutely love this format. I think that your random thoughts about the equipment are way more useful to an average consumer of such lenses than the very scientific comparisons. I think it’d work out great if you had your precise scripted etc comparisons for pro cinema gear that requires that level of detail and you could make those quick rant videos about consumer/prosumer gear. I love your videos, your style etc and I’d love to see you review things like budget APS-C gear for example.
These unscripted "information dump" videos are perfect for the people that want to watch them: enthusiasts who just want to know. To many of us, you're a solid "gut check" on new things, and I think you're spot-on with your assessment of how we will receive this. We appreciate you taking the extra time to toss this one out, and I think we'd love to see more videos like this. As someone pointed out above in a different comment, MKBHD's long-form iPhone video was illuminating to the pressures reviewers face. We'd definitely want you to cut yourself some slack around review embargo time, the quality of this video was still excellent in my opinion, and the length was good too. I'd want you to focus your time on topics that aren't time-sensitive. I still re-watch your videos on sony gamma curves regularly just to make sure I understand the topic, and it's in those tech deep-dives that your unique blend of presentation and explanation vault your videos above anything else on the web.
I got exactly what I wanted to know from this video; these are not the lenses I’ve been waiting for! Also, I now have no desire to watch any other videos on these lenses so that was a huge time saver for me. Thanks Gerald
Gerald - I love getting more videos with what you seem to think is less polish. You're still giving the amazing in-depth info that I'm looking for from your videos, and your delivery is warmer and more approachable. I love the more polished videos, too. but I actually prefer this.
If Gerald's videos were high information and low production value, I probably would not subscribe, and I certainly would not watch videos about products (like these) that I am not particularly interested in. But this is a high quality presentation, so I don't really get your point. It's factual, comes from a reliable source, and it's made clear from the beginning that it is not in-depth.
I'm a first time watcher, and my new-to-me Sony is on the way to me. So I got a lot of value from this because I plan to buy some light primes to get started. Thank you.
Love the fact you can do these small videos so we have more information about new products. Thanks for trying this new format and I hope you continue doing it!
Yes, i was really looking for info on the 35mm 1.8 and wanted to see if it was better to get this 3 pack instead. Gonna get the 35 and the normal g 20-70. What would you recommend next? I love my dog, hiking, and bought the camera to capture my newborn son. Ive got everything from close up baby to mtn landsape to wildlife on then farm. What should my third lense be?
I love this kind of undone style, its more simple yet much informative than many of those reviewer out there. I think done it once in a while is a good thing
Great video as always, regarding the lenses: 24mm f2.8 - that distortion is crazy. Honestly just save up for the 24mm f1.4 and enjoy this wonderful lens. Haven't heard anyone talking bad about it and I myself use in 90% of the time. You won't regret it and the value is really good, even if it's expensive... 40mm f2.5 - why not get the 35mm f1.8? You lose the aperture ring but gain a full stop, the price is the same. 50mm f2.5 - same here, why not the awesome awesome 55mm f1.8? If you like the focal length, this thing is a beast! (I love it but don't use it very often) In other words, these lenses have been released too late. I love the design thoug and wish **all** Sony lenses came with that design language. Imagine the 90mm Macro and 55mm reworked to this
I agree about the 24mm, it has terrible distortion and is not that sharp. The 40mm is a winner, it’s terrific for landscape, better handling of CA and flare than the 35mm 1,8. The 50mm, I agree you may as well go for the 55, but the 50G is really nice and has really nice bokeh and is
Thanks for the quick review! Question: how would you compare the 24mm 2.8 against the old Sony Zeiss 35mm 2.8 (aside from focal length)? I'm on the hunt for the perfect compact A7C prime lens in a wide-mediumish focal length for a minimalist backpacking setup.
This style of video is great. Specifically when it's something like this when it's a group of things that aren't so super cool/new that they deserve a long video and you already know enough about the general features that you don't need to do a huge, in-depth review. I like it and I'd rather have these so we get more videos per-month!
When are these coming out? I really want to get that 40mm. I really dig my Minolta 45mm and Konica 40mm so this Sony 40mm with all the modern feat is legit. They should have paired it with a 65mm instead of a 50mm and that 50 should have been paired with the 35mm they released.
Your, quickly thrown together, video is better and more detailed than most people's in-depth analysis. Absolutely love the idea of some of these quick thoughts videos.
Third format is awesome! I’ll always take more content from you, and a format that allows you to inject more of your personality is always appreciated!!!!
I'd certainly encourage you to do more of these. Yes, when it comes to putting down several $k for a camera, I love the thorough reviews. But, here you captured the key data and interpretation for a lens purchase decision. Thanks and keep them coming!
At least we got those sweet EF prices! 40mm 2.8 whaaaaat?! Also I think that's the first time I've ever heard a Canon shooter mention Sony in a positive light for their lens prices lol. Even if you covered your bases and threw in the 'relatively' there, smart man.
I really enjoy these overview type videos as they alert me to things I may not have considered or know about yet. Also sometimes the longer videos just go over my head at my skill level and knowledge base - less can be more sometimes but really it's your overall communication style that works for me.
I think this style of video is totally fine and still helpful for us, I would say keep making them as and when they fit the schedule if you like, no complaints from me
Those 3 lenses make a lot of sense for the new upcoming Airpeak Drone from Sony. And I believe that's the only reason why they exist. You can swap them and don't need to rebalance the gimbal. And they are lightweight which is another important reason. Also they have gears also for a gimbal. That's the reason why they exist.
I like this format. Gerald speed-reviewing five lenses is better than most people's in-depth review of one lens. The distortion on that 24G is CRAZY. It's almost a fish-eye.
First of all, you're my favorite media production channel. Second, I liked the video, but there's a large disparity between delivery with and without the teleprompter. I personally like the more you delivery from this vid, but whatever you prefer I'd merge the two a bit so there's not such a huge difference. Keep up the amazing work!
Not sure if this sounds weird but I don't come for the "so good" videos, I come for your personality and your point of view These unscripted videos are perfect (to prove I'm here for you: I'm not in the Sony ecosystem yet I'll be watching the whole video)
Sony (or Sigma/Tamron), just give us a 50mm f2 (or faster) that handles CA well and isn't $900. The Sigma 65 f2 is tempting, but getting a bit outside of the 50mm range. It's so weird that Sony slapped the G label on these after taking a look at some of the reviews. The point about the 35 1.8 is pretty telling that these might not live up to the G standard. Also, totally up for these Ranting Undone videos. Nice to have on the other monitor and just glance up for the sporadic images while I'm working on something!
Gerald. Any content from you is content we will enjoy. Whether it be full on Undone, or 'half-baked' Undone. Your half-baked is still better than most other fully baked videos out there in regards to quality of information and value. Keep them coming and thanks as always!
I really like this style of video for you! Feels much more conversational and entertaining. You seem much more energetic! Definitely ditch the script more often! :)
I like the ranting. More of these please. Especially if they are less work for you. At the end of today I’m still more informed than if I didn’t watch this video
I am a new subscriber specifically because of your quick/hot take on these new lenses. Saved me time and got to the meat of it. I like the cadence of speeding through the specs and comparison with minimal time wasted. A lot of information and quick. Thanks man!
Thanks for the info. I don't understand this 2.8, 2.5 f-stops though. These G Lenses should be faster at 1.8. Been waiting for Sony to update their older 50mm 1.8 with the newer faster focusing motors. With the f 1.2 & now this 2.5, I don't imagine they will come out with the f1.8 I've been waiting for. bummer.
@@kifley19 I’m ok with that. Something about the same range as their 85mm 1.8, which I own and love. The 50mm 1.8 would be a great companion to it, especially for video on the a7siii.
This is solid, no problem what so ever with the off the cuff format. If you're worried about people conflicting the "higher quality" format with the other, consider slightly different visuals/gfx cues, titles, or what not.
Ah, at the very end you mention the sony 35 f1.8. Thanks for this. I get so hung-up by the "G" and "GM" lenses, I don't even look at their non G-glass. Now I will!
I like Gerald’s rants. This video gave me enough info to let me decide I could justify the 50mm. But I’d want to spend a little more on the 35mm and I’m happy with the 20mm f1.8 that I bought last year. You could totally do more of these little rants.
Almost Sony almost. If only they had a 43mm and 47mm to round off the set. I like the recent Sony colour more tho, I look recently deceased rather than 2 weeks gone.
I like this format. I'm not in the market for any of these lenses, I don't even own a Sony camera. I just find this comparisons really entertaining Don't say it's a worse video than the more refined ones, it's just different.
Bro you’re killing it with the uploads! Really appreciate all you do Gerald 🤟 and these compact lenses are very intriguing. As far as the 24mm is concerned I’d prob rather get the 20mm F1.8 G lens and spent a couple hundred more for it.
This is the kind of lens i was hoping so badly for when I switched from micro four thirds. Thank you sony! Great video too, i enjoy this off-the-cuff style.
There is something very fun and charming about the off-the-cuff style video that we see in the livestreams as well. A lot of good info is given but it feels more like a conversational highlight reel than a presentation with all of the fine details. Both styles are great but this was a nice complement to the traditional Undone video style. Will continue to watch whatever style video you put out, keep up the good work!
Hey Gerald, I love your „GU Reviews” and their quality, but! I like you as a creator and you as a person sooo... I don’t mind videos like this. Even better! I want to see more of these, because I want to see more of your videos and hear what you have to say. Even if it means that quality in some videos is not gonna be as high as your standard for normal reviews is. Thank you for what you do! 💪🏼
It's stupid that a "not so good Gerald Undone video" is better than 90% of the other reviews out there. If this format works for you, mate, please keep 'em coming, because they're helpful as always.
Given Sony that trusts you enough to submit so many products to you to review, I think this format is perfect for products like this. Of course, I really appreciate the kind of full on professional review for something like a $2,000 50mm f/1.2 GM before I pre-order it, but I think this format is great for these types of things. Thanks!
"Hi I'm Gerald Undone, Sensor Size doesn't matter, it's how you use it that does" btw I love the new studio setup :D it brings back memories of the old setup
Very useful. Just purchased the A7C and looking for some primes. The kit lens that comes with it isn't bad, but still want a set of good, inexpensive primes. Have your reviewed the Sigma 28-70 f.2.8 e-mount?
I would love to see more on-the-fly content like this as well. You're very knowledgeable, so I always take away a lot of useful information. As a filmmaker, I don't care much about bokeh having "onion rings". I think that is more of a photographer's concern. If someone is watching your movie, and they notice an onion ring pattern in your bokeh then the bokeh isn't your problem. The same goes for edge sharpness. Great content, Gerald. Thank you!
FYI, I watched about half of this when you released it and enjoyed it then, but came back to it when I was actually considering buying the Sony 24mm and bought the Sigma instead based on your recommendation. I appreciate your work, and your recent stuff in particular!
Great video, I'm always down for a rant! I like that you did a wide array of comparison of similar lenses and included another manufacturer. Please continue doing these quickies and maybe consider revamping some of the past that were singular lens reviews to do these rant lineups.
Technically this format is even more Gerald Undone that regular Gerald Undone videos. This is Gerald Undone Undone...
Undoned?

It really needs a side by side comparison to 40mm. I am not convinced the 35mm F1.8 is sharper by any means. He might be coming at from using it more as a video lens than a photo lens. Sure the F1.8 is faster, but it is not very sharp for its first two stops

Any info from Gerald Undone is gold. No matter what the format. ☺️ Thank you for your hard work!
The real comparison: Nifty Fifty VS 50mm/2.5 (maybe even the nifty fifty stopped down to 2.[something]).
It's only marginally bigger but costs half 👀
A "quick" video from you is still over 15 minutes, so no complaints here! Love all the content you provide, regardless of length.
Gerald Undone is living rent free in my heart.
Not a fan of onion rings either, give me fries anyday.
I like this format. Gerald speed-reviewing five lenses is better than most people's in-depth review of one lens. The distortion on that 24G is CRAZY. It's almost a fish-eye.
Yes! These videos are great! Still so much value and undone enough to watch haha
Not sure if this sounds weird but I don't come for the "so good" videos, I come for your personality and your point of view
These unscripted videos are perfect
(to prove I'm here for you: I'm not in the Sony ecosystem yet I'll be watching the whole video)
I fully support both Sony Simps and the banana stand. Great vid G!
I really like this style of video for you! Feels much more conversational and entertaining. You seem much more energetic! Definitely ditch the script more often! :)
I like the ranting. More of these please. Especially if they are less work for you. At the end of today I’m still more informed than if I didn’t watch this video
Nice, subscribing was easy decision. So can I still run these on my A6300 backup camera?
I am a new subscriber specifically because of your quick/hot take on these new lenses. Saved me time and got to the meat of it. I like the cadence of speeding through the specs and comparison with minimal time wasted. A lot of information and quick. Thanks man!
Gerald, the unscripted format is great - keep doing it!
Thanks for the info. I don't understand this 2.8, 2.5 f-stops though. These G Lenses should be faster at 1.8. Been waiting for Sony to update their older 50mm 1.8 with the newer faster focusing motors. With the f 1.2 & now this 2.5, I don't imagine they will come out with the f1.8 I've been waiting for. bummer.
Even if they did, the 1.8 would have to be priced more than $600.
@@kifley19 & 1.8 would obviously not be like pancake
Now I will!
These look really compelling coming from a M43 platform!
I just find this comparisons really entertaining
Don't say it's a worse video than the more refined ones, it's just different.
Thanks!
"Hi I'm Gerald Undone, Sensor Size doesn't matter, it's how you use it that does"
btw I love the new studio setup :D it brings back memories of the old setup
You're a natural Gerald, great quick review, not boring watched it all and would watch more. Thanks!
Very useful. Just purchased the A7C and looking for some primes. The kit lens that comes with it isn't bad, but still want a set of good, inexpensive primes. Have your reviewed the Sigma 28-70 f.2.8 e-mount?
Sony 35mm f1.8 is $698 now. So only $50 more than sigma 35mm f2. Definately go with sony.
The sigma is sharper and has better distortion control
Great video, I'm always down for a rant! I like that you did a wide array of comparison of similar lenses and included another manufacturer. Please continue doing these quickies and maybe consider revamping some of the past that were singular lens reviews to do these rant lineups.
