I've seen SRV live - 4 times - and I haven't seen anyone play like this since the last time I saw WV in '89. This guy shreds with feel. The sad thing is that rock radio died decades ago and the formulaic crap we must listen to now doesn't play Philip Sayce. They wouldn't have played SRV if he were a current artist, either. And for those saying Sayce is an SRV clone, go listen to Albert King and see where Stevie's style came from. There's nothing wrong with being influenced by someone. Hell, if Robert Johnson never existed ain't no one playing the blues anyway.
Never seen SRV live, only through RUclips, even though I wish I could, but I was too young. I spent hours listening to different lives, and there was for sure something unique with him that will always fascinate me. Then I discovered few years later P. Sayce from an independent radio in France, and there is something very expressive in his work that clearly reminds me SRV, and I'm not talking about the tone or where he plays it on the neck but more the energy. Btw, I totally agree with what you said and about the influences. Sayce is not copying, he is just inspired. (Listening to it while I type, I've never heard a such bend at 2:56, haha)
Right on! Hendrix, SRV, Sayce, Gary Moore (if you haven't heard him play, check him out), even John Mayer have all drawn inspiration from those founding fathers of the blues and SRV was responsible for the 1980s blues revival. All those guitarists have been inspirations for myself and other young musicians who have been bitten with the blues bug!
I'm not a gutarist and could give a hoot about techniqe. This dude is just playing his heart in this performance. Anyone that can make an instrument an extension of their soul is truly blessed!
How could someone even compare this guy to John Mayer?!?! John Mayer is a strong player. Philip Sayce is other-wordly. John Mayer is stiff and easily defined. Philip Sayce is raw, powerful and absolutely full of soul.
I just saw his performance at the Rivoli in Toronto. I can't think of a better word than 'honest' when it comes to his playing. I saw Bonamassa for 4x the price last summer, and as great as he is, Philip Sayce just absolutely makes your hair stand on end. He is just so present in the moment and you feel a part of it. If you do get a chance to see him, you know what you're in for. Just remember to bring ear plugs. No joke, my ears were ringing for 3 days.
Just saw Philip Sayce in Hamilton this past summer. Yup, he is an honest player. Every thought and feeling speaks for him through his guitar. I got to meet him for a few minutes after the show and he signed my 1930s Regal Resonator which was my grandfather's guitar. Just a very cool, humble guy who is a great inspiration to young blues guitarists like myself.
I greatly respect how much he embraces his influences. Contrary to popular belief there's nothing wrong with taking from other artists lmao. Just let people play what/how they want to. There's a reason this guy is successful.
One of the great blues guitar moments captured in time via a little phone-film on youtube ;~) Just love his 'time-borrowing' my rock guitarists teacher used to call it. He showed me tons of Gary Moore stuff!
I just discovered Philip Sayce cant beleive that strat master my jaw is hanging im 63 and still discovering great blues ...im glad to own a strat even if im not good its always inspirering to see what this man can do with it😇
Best living blues guitarist playing today. John Mayer is pop. This is blues. This is his roots and what he knows how to play. I’ve learned more awesome licks from watching him play than anyone. I’d love to see him live one day. I love the small clubs and bars he plays that’s where blues should kept. Away from the mainstream public listeners.
Wow this is beautiful, have never heard of Philip Sayce but will have to look more into his stuff. Such a talented player who's playing with a lot of soul.
Watching this while depressed during the covid-19 pandemic. Transported me right off the planet! Thank you so much for posting it. Those who live in SoCal can see him live at the Baked Potato and other places around LA. Do yourself a favor and go.
Listen Mayer is different. Both him and Sayce are the .000001% that understands how to play with that much emotion and technique. They both play from the soul and thats why its awesome. Thats all I am trying to learn when I play. He memorized ZERO notes in that solo. Just improvised it, thats why its awesome
Goosebumps from 7.44 until the end of the solo, awesome feeling. Philip Sayce needs to be more recognized, he's one of the kings of the guitar nowadays, with Jason Barwick and Bonamassa, in my opinion.
Dig this the most! A gentle reminder to any who may desire a kernel o' Wisdom, we all like what we like, an' it ain't a competition, m'Friends, treat it like a buffet, take what you enjoy and leave the Roquefort for those that likes it...
To everyone hating on John Mayer on this video: he's not even in it. You can't get enough of talking about him. John probably can't cram every blues lick he knows into 10 seconds like this, but I'm gonna go ahead and say that there's a reason why everyone has heard of John Mayer and not Philip Sayce. John writes hits. Lots of them. John understands note placement and how to build a solo. He can use his great blues playing to complement his great songwriting instead of just writing a basic song structure to put around his solo. No disrespect to Sayce, but come on guys. In terms of musicianship John Mayer blows him and most others completely out of the water
I am a huge fan of Mayer but are you saying that ppl don't know Sayce? I would have to disagree. We do know him and we are huge fans. Just because you don't know his body of work does not mean that others don't. And a huge reason why he isn't commercially "successful" is because he spent almost 8 years touring with Melissa Etheridge being her guitarist. And even then people would go to her shows just to see him so please do not determine a person's success and fan base by how many chart hits they have. That's too disrespectful to music.
Finally someone who gets it. I couldn't of said it better myself. Mayer has been quoted saying he wanted to be a guitar hero until he saw everyone else trying to do it. Mayer is a world class musician, "A" list, who's blended blues and soul into a modern day pop package, won Grammys, collaborated and played with the greatest musicians of the last 40 years. Sayce is a phenomenal player who's popular with guitar geeks. Mayer has crafted some incredible songs and by the time his career is over will go down has one of the greatest ever. End he can shred to, but he doesn't have to.
This looks like Tin Pan Alley, the SRV influence is obvious here, but I really like it. And Jeff Healey played this music, and his version is very different, but wonderful
Amo a este tipo de verdad me enorgullece no que suene y que tenga mucha influencia de SRV, lo que me encanta es que de verdad pone sus sentimientos y se une con su guitarra cuando la toca, le pone en grande
That tone though......

(Listening to it while I type, I've never heard a such bend at 2:56, haha)
Philip Sayce and Eric Gales--------- the current kings......
Personally, I hear a lot of Robert Cray in this performance.
Listen to Cray playing "Time Makes Two."
Right on! Hendrix, SRV, Sayce, Gary Moore (if you haven't heard him play, check him out), even John Mayer have all drawn inspiration from those founding fathers of the blues and SRV was responsible for the 1980s blues revival. What a beautiful version of a great song.
."..went down to tin pan alley......see what was going on..." Great blues playing! Can't wait to see him live!
I'm not a gutarist and could give a hoot about techniqe. This dude is just playing his heart in this performance. Anyone that can make an instrument an extension of their soul is truly blessed!
Just love his obvious SRV influences
René Lugonic ...
and Hendrix
who cares if he sounds like srv or somebody else... he's great, he plays well and we should have way more artists like him around... Well done!
Raf Dan there is about 5000 Fuckers just like him out there.... wonder why you never hear off them anymore.......hmm
I just pick on him cause he wears lastats scarf
I dig him rho

Bonamassa is a great technician, but I feel he overplays... this guy is great!

God i wish the whole performance was on here it just get better as it goes, been listening to this for about 5 years now
I could eat that reverb. Sweet tone!!!!
He is a great player, obviously influenced by SRV and Jimi
and why not?, well done to him.
I greatly respect how much he embraces his influences. Contrary to popular belief there's nothing wrong with taking from other artists lmao. Just let people play what/how they want to. There's a reason this guy is successful.

Wow this is beautiful, have never heard of Philip Sayce but will have to look more into his stuff. Such a talented player who's playing with a lot of soul.
He has it allright. Open your ears and stop comparing.
Never heard of this guy until tonight, but I must say, he has some really fucking tasty licks. Mad respect.
Not only is his playing insane but he has a really great voice as well.

Philip is a beast !!!
Watching this while depressed during the covid-19 pandemic. Transported me right off the planet! Thank you so much for posting it. Those who live in SoCal can see him live at the Baked Potato and other places around LA. Do yourself a favor and go.
bluzfan190 How right you are! He is another overlooked guitar man. Stay safe in these bad times. Best wishes from France!

Listen Mayer is different. Both him and Sayce are the .000001% that understands how to play with that much emotion and technique. They both play from the soul and thats why its awesome. kick ass bro rock on.
Goosebumps from 7.44 until the end of the solo, awesome feeling. Philip Sayce needs to be more recognized, he's one of the kings of the guitar nowadays, with Jason Barwick and Bonamassa, in my opinion.
This is the !st blues guitarist to turn my head since Kenny Wayne Shepherd. I dont think Kenny has to worry, but Philip is clearly up there with best.
Saw Philip in Central Park in 2000 with Jeff and taped the show.
Great tone!
thats a so amazing solo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a Jeff Healey tribute, but dang if he isn't nailing that SRV strat tone! Good job, well done! Great performance, would love to see him live!
Merci Stevie !!
Beautiful! ❤️🎸❤️
wow, cool stuff
Love it! Intense!
he's got the blues feeling and i like it!!!!
The Blues Don't die
uh-HUH
theres some cool things here he does from a guitarist standpt,
4:47 first for me (great idea - got it!)
4:54 ditto (great idea too - check)
4:54 has to be a direct jeff healey influence, very jazzy and JH was a big jazz guy
Omg, this guy is fantastic... The new bluesmen generation it's awesome : John Mayer, Dereck Trucks, Philip Sayce, Scott Mckeon, Matt Schofield !
Dig this the most! A gentle reminder to any who may desire a kernel o' Wisdom, we all like what we like, an' it ain't a competition, m'Friends, treat it like a buffet, take what you enjoy and leave the Roquefort for those that likes it...

So you define being a great musician as writing pop hit singles? You are delusional.
I am a huge fan of Mayer but are you saying that ppl don't know Sayce? I would have to disagree. We do know him and we are huge fans. Cali Redd
I hate Mayer but your absolutely correct on Sayce.
Blues Oddity thank you

This looks like Tin Pan Alley, the SRV influence is obvious here, but I really like it. And Jeff Healey played this music, and his version is very different, but wonderful
Tone that drips badness..........
